New and Upcoming: GE Profile 'SmartDispense' FL washer and dryer

Hello all!

Just thought I'd share this bit of info I got from the GE website. Saw these at the Seattle Home Show a few weeks ago and they had a really cool look, although I'm not sure I'd want that "SmartDispense" feature that stores detergent and fabric softener in the pedestals. What if I wanted to change detergents for a specific load of clothes? What if I wanted to use powdered detergents? What if I don't want to use fabric softener? I really don't see the appeal in that feature, but that's just me. Unless I'm missing something and maybe there is a way to override the SmartDispense feature.

I don't see a space where I can place a link so I will just paste it here (below), right into the post. These are to hit stores in summer and it will be interesting to see how they do considering that the current GE FL (NOT the one made by Electrolux sold at Home Depot) seems to get quite a few negative reviews. If you go to the link and download the pictures you can see a dispenser drawer where there is usually one, in the picture. I guess there must be a manual override feature? Anyway, taking a commercial concept and integrating it into a consumer good is not a bad move as I can see people with large families, or who wash constantly benefiting from the concept.

Does anyone have these yet? I think the idea is great, but I'm not sure I want to be the first to test this out for GE. These machines also have the "CleanSpeak" technology, where the washer and dryer talk to each other--if I wash a load of perm. press, the dryer automatically sets to a perm. press drying cycle.

Now if they would only come up with some type of auto-fold feature! ;)

Well, I'm here to tell you !! I never in my life imagined that I'd be so darn excited about doing laundry !!!! We ended up getting the Miele 4840 washer, and the gas dryer. The difference in how clean the clothes get is absolutely amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm major impressed, and actually DH and DS have commented positively, also, which is amazing in itself !!!!!!!!!!!!! The first few loads of clothes that I did . . . well, just sat in front of the washer and watched it !!! Can't believe how quiet, how little water, all that !! (Neighbors even came by to watch it and were equally amazed !! Do ya think we need to get a life here in this neighborhood ????!!!!!!!) I'm also using the Persil detergent, both liquid and powder, which is kinda pricey, but so little of it is used . . . and the smell is so fresh, without any fake perfumey smells . . . Do I sound like some kind of commercial here ???? !!!!! Well, anyway . . . that's the scoop on the w/d saga . . . Glad the decision making process is a done deal, and that I am totally thrilled with it all !!! Now . . . hopefully no more decisions on anything for a really long time, no angst . . . except that we're re-doing both of our bathrooms right now . . . so here we go again !!!!! C.

Is this a good price for GE Harmony washer/dryer?

When I went to Lowes to check out the cost of their Harmony set - I had just been to the only place in town that actually had a set on the floor - RC Willey. Luckily I had the salesperson there jot down their price (it was on sale) on their sales card instead of just on a piece of paper from my purse. This is what the sales person at Lowes needed to price match. Unfortunately I didn't know about the match +10% policy they (used to?) have. Lowes here never said it was special order...just that they don't keep in stock on floor and have to get from their warehouse which is located elsewhere. When the sales person called for permission to price match - she told me she had to fill out a form with details which they previously never had to do. She was agitated with Lowes upper management because she said in this economy you would think they would do as much as they can to make a sale and keep a customer ... she's right. Anyway, she got the ok and actually they matched the price that RC Willy had written down that also contained the GE mail in discount amount - 5% I believe. I did go to Lowes mainly because of all the positive comments on this forum -- and there's something a little 'off' about RCWilley - can't put my finger on it. But I'm glad they had the GE Harmony on the floor so I could actually look at it -- even Sears here doesn't display it. When I read what your sales person said....I wonder if he's just trying to get a few more $ out of the sale...I understand HD sales people aren't on commission, but don't know about Lowes. Only downside is that I've had to wait 2 weeks for delivery -- I missed the cutoff date but they'll be here this Thursday. I'll write a review after I try them out a few times. So thankful to all on this forum and to That Home Site for being able to read about others experiences. Have a great day!

Icky smells are not from forgeting laundry in the machine,unless you leave it there for days. It is combination of things. Luck of use of HOT water, improper dosing on detergents. Not properly rinsed laundry.Detergent choice didn't cause me any trouble either.Powder or liquid,cheap or expensive. The only diference I saw was inthe cleaning power.Now I'm using Persil only, hot cycles and sanitizing only. I never use tub clean or bleach and I don't wipe the rubber seal,I just check it sometimes b/c little lint builds up there. No mildew,no smell. I leave the door open in between washing and I clean pump filter. That's all. I've been using FL for over 30 years without smell.

Thanks for the info. I'm a little stunned that there are actually you-tube videos available of this machine swooshing around, but I suppose some people are passionate about aplliances. Anyway, good info and nice to know the only gripe Jaimie has with it is with the fabric softener dispenser.....hmmm....not sure I ever used a separate fabric softener :)

I just wonder if the soap dispenser would get clogged over time. As liquid soap sets it gets thicker as the water slowly evaporates. That being said, I do think the dispenser idea is a neat concept. Hopefully, there would be some way to clean the lines without pulling out the machine.

I had seriously thought of buying them. I have a few GE appliances that have always performed well. The one thing, besides the high cost of the pedestal/dispenser, is they also set higher. For my laundry room they wouldn't fit under the existing cabinets.

I did a brief write-up on these machines on my blog. I sent an email to GE with a few questions, but didn't really get all that much of a resposne. They did confirm that the problem they had with the boot tearing has been resolved.

The SmartDispense system is entirely optional, and you must have the pedestals to use the system. However, just because you purchase the pedstals does not mean you have to use the SmartDispense system. There is a drawer on the machine above the control panel if you choose not to use the automatic dispenser.

Yes, the components do need to be disassembled and cleaned periodically. GE did not specify how often, although I would think it would have to be twice a year, at the least. Doing this would not require pulling out the machines as the tubs for the additives are stored in the drawer, which can be removed.

I have noticed some online retailers are selling these, although they may just be taking advance orders. GE was not able to tell me when they would be widely available.

I was out shopping for a new washer and did see this at a local dealer. The price was 499 I'm not sure if that was just the soap dispenser or included the pedestal.
