First Summer Torte of the Season!

Actually, I just made TWO to bring to a neighbor's barbeque this afternoon. Peach and a strawberry/blueberry!

It's become a family favorite and everyone has their own favorite fruit combination. What yours??

blue berry peach....and in the winter, apple with some pecans and extra brown sugar in top.

sweet cherry, drizzled with black forest syrup, yum, love the stuff...

another month or so and the cherries will be starting...

Technically, my growing season ends around October 5th, which is the average date for the killing freeze. But my summer growing season ends about the time that the goldenrod stops blooming, which is around September 15th or so. Frosts can be hit or miss after that; I usually have 1-2 near misses before the big one. After that, it's time to get the garlic in, turn the rest of the garden under (weather permitting), and begin processing the year's seed.

Thank you for the ideas. As far as how high can they climb, I've seen photos of them in trees, so I'm guessing as high as they like. They are members of the squirrel family, so I expect they can do what they like as long as they have the motivation. We have an 8 foot wood privacy fence around the back of our property that I have seen him climb over. My veggie plot is 8 ft x 15 ft and while I would fully enclose it, I suspect he'll go over pretty much anything we do unless it's actually a cage. Even then, how to you make a secure gate that is trenched in the ground? I've looked up Liquid Fence and can't for the life of me figure out what it's made out of! Anyone know? Part of the issue is that I have a 3 year old and I aim to garden as organically as possible to reduce the risk of my kids ingesting toxins. I'm extremely hesitant to spray plants that they have easy access to or any of the produce I grow - which is the most appealing to the woodchuck. It's very frustrating. We've had a number of people suggest we shoot it, which IS legal as long as it's actively damaging our property. That's not an option for me with my kids. Just not willing to take that risk in my home or on my property. As hungry as our resident red-tailed hawks are, they don't seem to care one bit about the woodchuck population!

That looks delicious, I love pears. I'd finish it with some maple spiked whipped cream, I love the combination of maple and pears. Well, actually I just love maple. (grin) I've also made it with plums, peaches, blueberries, raspberries and this one with sweet cherries topped with a black forest sauce. They were all good, but this one was my favorite. Annie

Raspberries from the garden and . . . peaches or cherries. I have not tried strawberries with this cake. Strawberries are such a rare treat here, I just want to eat them plain and savor them sans accoutrements. I'll bet the cake would be good with plums or apricots, which gives me something to look forward to this summer, lol!

It's still on my must try list. I'm thinking apricots or plums. I'm sure cherries would be good too.

Lpink, it was actually the first time we tried it with strawberries. My DD wanted to go with the red, white & blue theme for Memorial Day. lol

I think peach/blueberry and raspberry are my favorites!

My favorite it kiwi/mango, sometimes with strawberries added. I also like cherry, but not in combination, and use a granola crust.

What are your favorite crusts?

Lars, I usually just make a crust for a fruit tart using SharonCB's Never Fail Patry recipe, but I love the walnut crust on her salmon quiche and have thought about using it as a crust for other things.

Has anyone added a streusel topping to the summer torte? It might be "gilding the lily", but it seems like it would be more "coffee cake" that way...

I did a streusel topping on my raspberry one. It was good but not necessary. I wanted something more "coffee cakeish" at the time. Gave me an excuse to eat it for dessert AND breakfast, lol!

The favorites here are
Nectarine, Plum, Plucots, & Black Cherries.

Either each alone,
Or a combination of any or all.

It never occurred to me to put this one in a crust.

I will probably try one with a Streusel topping though.
That sounds really good!
