First Summer Torte of the Season!

Actually, I just made TWO to bring to a neighbor's barbeque this afternoon. Peach and a strawberry/blueberry!

It's become a family favorite and everyone has their own favorite fruit combination. What yours??

blue berry peach....and in the winter, apple with some pecans and extra brown sugar in top.

another month or so and the cherries will be starting...

The original NTYimes recipe does not include vanilla. 1983. But in 2016 they published 5 Ways to Adapt Our Famous Plum Torte Recipe I wish more recipes did that. Rather than complain that comments are not the true recipe, they published reader comments for variations. Different seasonal fruits, different flours, less sugar, different sugars. Any pan will do and easily doubled for a sheet pan torte. And different liquors. I'd forgotten about the lemon juice. I appreciate the bumping of this. I'd forgotten where my original recipe came from. That was when i started making mine with cornmeal flour for gluten-free. (family member) Similar recipe using flour was one of the first things i learned to make as a wee child. Easy and fun for a young one to decorate with seasonal fruits. Mother always had fresh fruit at the table and whipped cream or ice cream. Making one tomorrow with plums and rhubarb.

My peach torte with peach gelato turned out to be a huge hit. It was so successful, I decided to go ahead and see if a savory version would turn out for me. It's in the oven right now, so I have to wait 45 minutes to discover if it will be a ''hit'', or I ''missed''! Here is what I did: I substituted the sugar for parmesan cheese I ground in the food processor, and added about 3 T. of chopped chives to the softened butter. After adding the eggs, flour, salt and baking powder, I spread the batter into a greased tart pan, evening it out with an offset spatula. I covered the batter with a thin layer of some French onion sour cream I made yesterday (by carmelizing the onions until they were deeply browned, and stirring them into the sour cream). To that I added a 1/4 lb. of browned sausage (Des Moines finest, Graziano's!), and about 1 Tablespoon of parmesan, which I reserved for the top. I hope it tastes good... Even if it doesn't, the French Onion dip is to die for. I may just have to console myself with that!

Lovely bloom and I see several more buds. I don't disbub my dahlias though have been told that doing so allows the remaining flowers to get larger. This year some critter is nipping the flower off. I find the flower with barely any stem on the ground. Today I cut the recent bloom shortly after it opened and brought it inside. Planted mine late as well so not many blooms yet. If I have lots of blooms and am expecting a frost I make bouquets to share with my neighbors. Had enough for eight bouquets last fall.

How fast it all went--not just this past summer, but all those years, Jim. I remember some of your 2015 photos, even. I love that colorful mix of annuals you grew, and I still think you are the marigold King. Why did you remove all those dogwoods--ugh what a job? Your dog Candy looks like a sweetie, and I am sorry for your loss. Candy had lots of fun with Gracie right up till the end, and that's a good thing. Lastly, how can I forget the Pink Party Wagon?? We should use it more in the coming season. How is your Mom doing? Very well, I'll bet. And thanks for the start of a new thread. I certainly hope Houzz shapes up and lets you use Chrome. Ann, your Black Baccara is stupendous. Golly gee, I hate using those over-the-top adjectives, but BB is an over-the-top rose. I wish I could touch those velvety petals. My memories of summer are deer, too much shade for roses, and drought. We still stand at 7 inches of precipitation for the year. September is now the third driest Sept on record (since 1886). Some good things to report: now that the dreadful locust trees are losing their leaves, and sun is shining through the branches, my elderly Evelyns are popping some of the most beautiful blooms I've seen on the big E. Those roses were waiting to bloom with lots of stored energy.....I'm really enjoying Rouge Royale blooms, all of which I've picked over the last few weeks for bouquets (yaya deer). They last a long time, and the scent is lovely. I noticed that RR blooms darken almost immediately after picking, and I like the darker color. See you all on the fall thread. Diane

Raspberries from the garden and . . . peaches or cherries. I have not tried strawberries with this cake. Strawberries are such a rare treat here, I just want to eat them plain and savor them sans accoutrements. I'll bet the cake would be good with plums or apricots, which gives me something to look forward to this summer, lol!

It's still on my must try list. I'm thinking apricots or plums. I'm sure cherries would be good too.

Lpink, it was actually the first time we tried it with strawberries. My DD wanted to go with the red, white & blue theme for Memorial Day. lol

I think peach/blueberry and raspberry are my favorites!

My favorite it kiwi/mango, sometimes with strawberries added. I also like cherry, but not in combination, and use a granola crust.

What are your favorite crusts?

Lars, I usually just make a crust for a fruit tart using SharonCB's Never Fail Patry recipe, but I love the walnut crust on her salmon quiche and have thought about using it as a crust for other things.

Has anyone added a streusel topping to the summer torte? It might be "gilding the lily", but it seems like it would be more "coffee cake" that way...

I did a streusel topping on my raspberry one. It was good but not necessary. I wanted something more "coffee cakeish" at the time. Gave me an excuse to eat it for dessert AND breakfast, lol!

The favorites here are
Nectarine, Plum, Plucots, & Black Cherries.

Either each alone,
Or a combination of any or all.

It never occurred to me to put this one in a crust.

I will probably try one with a Streusel topping though.
That sounds really good!
