New LG Steam Dryer ???????

I just purchased the LG Steam Washer and Dryer in ruby red about 6 weeks ago...For the most part i love them and have zero comlaints except for the drying capablility of the dryer. I have tried many diff settings and still my clothes espeicially the heavier types of clothes like jeans, jackets, etc come out damp or slightly wet around the seems, waist, etc. I have them usually on high dry level and cotton/towels or normal settings. I am stumped as to why i am still having wet clothes. I replaced this set in lue of my old, beaten down whirlpool duo and I actually have to say that the dryer did a better job than the LG one when it came time to drying EVERYTHING. Should i be making a service call or is this normal for this type of machine...thank you.

I wanted to add that the dryer is electric. my old one was gas.

Did you check your dryer vent? You need to check every inch from the dryer to the outside. This may be impossible to do yourself if you don't have the equipment, but you can call a duct and vent company.

Be sure it is a hard or semi-hard vent - not the flimsy metal or (heaven forbid) a plastic vent. Be sure it doesn't just go into the attic - this is very common in older houses.

"....after 20 minutes of drying and the clothes felt damp and cold." Well, I'd call that a clue. Have little doubt LG service will have it corrected quickly. "...the loads I'm drying now are bigger, since the washer--and I thought dryer--can take it." Yes, they can. Once the tech has that dryer set right, I think you'll be very satisfied with the performance. Just one caveat.....don't neglect to check that dryer vent once in while regardless of this particular event.. Making sure it's clear and free-flowing should be part of regular maintenance. (I do mine once a year.) If fixing the machine involves moving it away from the connection, I'd certainly take the opportunity to check and verify. Even partially obstructed vents lower efficiency and cost you more. Seriously obstructed ones are dangerous.

Hi all, First post. Apologies it is so long. Well, I've been lurking around here for quite a while, just reading and learning. I've loved clothes washers and dishwashers since I was a small child and my mother would only get me to sleep if I was listening to the hum of a washer. In January, I purchased my first FL washer/dryer combo, the LG WM3988HWA. I love this machine and my clothes have never been cleaner, fresher. I just had the first service call out today as the nozzle at the top of the rubber gasket at the door that is used for both the Water Circulation and the Steam features stopped functioning. Well, the Steam still worked fine, but the Water Circulation spray had turned into a slight dribble / dripping instead of a strong spray. This circulates the water in certain cycles, like the Bulky Item cycle and sprays the soapy or rinse water back onto the clothes as they tumble. Now, I follow all the rules, wiping the gasket down after each wash (actually I do it once after the wash is complete, and once after the dry cycle is complete making sure to get underneath it as well, and I get a lot of lint each time). I have run the tub clean cycle every two weeks (it does get a lot of lint out, which I can see floating in the water). I've drained the machine and cleaned the filter at each tub clean (not much in the filter, and the way it's designed, I can't imagine it would catch too much anyway). Well, as you might guess, the technician opened the machine and found tons of lint blocking the spray nozzle in the tube connecting it to the pump. Once cleared, the nozzle worked fine again. I asked him what I might do to prevent it from happening again. I have two shorthair cats, a sister with long hair, and myself in the house currently. I know the water circulates through the filter before hitting the nozzle, or at least that's what it sounds like. The technician told me that I could prevent it by cleaning the rubber gasket, running tub clean.....basically everything I've been doing religiously. I don't want to have someone coming out every few months to clean this out. Are there any suggestions on what I can do to prevent this from happening? I was wondering if you experts out there thought it might work to purchase some gauze or filter material from an aquarium store and stuff it in the filter to catch all the stuff that appears to be going through? I just don't want to cause strain to the pump and shorten it's life, but I thought aquarium filter material is made to work with pumps, so maybe it would be ok. Thanks for any advice. Nico

We went with the Samsungs (338Âs which is the 4.0 capacity version of the 448Âs) and we absolutely love our machines. The performance to date is excellent and they are extremely quiet. The vibration reduction technology (ball bearing system) really works. We are really pleased with these machines. Just be sure the installers do not turn your washer over to install the pedestal if you decide to buy pedestals. Samsung has finally wised up and they are telling their dealers to stop flipping the machines to install the pedestals as it causes damage. Nonetheless, installers are still flipping the machinesÂclaiming itÂs safe as long as the shipping bolts are in. Not true. Many malfunctions of machines after delivery are due to the machine being flipped. Like all household appliances that use water, ff you have hard water, you will have to be concerned about mineral buildup for sure. Our water is hard (16 grains); so I donÂt bother with the steam function. Also, the stream function in of itself is not worth the risk to my dryer. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the truth of the matter is the steam dryer is a bunch of hokie crap. Clothing dried using the steam function does not look much different from clothing dried without steam. And itÂs not just SamsungÂitÂs all steam dryers. Nothing looks pressed/ironed because a dryer cannot produce the amount of steam necessary to get out the wrinkles for that pressed/ironed look. I still iron everything before I wear it. The good news is my clothes are far less wrinkled than they were from that crappy Calypsos set I had before the Samsungs. The Calypsos twisted my clothes into knots and created wrinkles; the Samsungs never knot or twist up my clothes. Most people would probably find their clothing out of the Samsung dryer acceptable for wearÂbut if you are looking for a wrinkle free look right out of the dryer--keep you iron hot.

Yes, the water tank is full. In fact, I don't think that the water level even drops when I try the Steam Fresh and Steam Sanitary cycles. The repair techs also checked that the steam function was working. I remember needing to refill after several loads had been done, but I haven't refilled it at all after this last few batches of testing before and after the dryer vent cleaning. I don't know what else to do other than to call for repair again and tell them a cycle completed in 9 minutes is not normal.

Many of us LG dryer owners have noticed the same thing.
(we have gas)
It has to do with the energy effiency and the lower dryer temperature, but also has higher air flow...

You could set the dryness level up one notch (on each load)

The old dryers didn't care about effiency and usually over-dried everything and nobody complained.

Don't know why these dryers aren't drying to your satisfaction but have doubts it has anything to do with energy efficiency.

In the US, Energy Star doesn't have a rating for dryer energy efficiency. There is no metric for comparison. The reason given is that pretty much all dryers in the US operate the same way and there isn't a significant difference between various models with respect to energy efficiency. I can't remember manufacturers making claims of one machine being more efficient than another. Don't believe CR measures energy efficiency either. Maybe there should be an Energy Star rating for dryers as a way of getting folks to think in creative ways about better ways to dry, but that's another question altogether.

i don't know, but i'm shopping for a dryer and the user reviews on consumerreports.com only rank it 3 stars out of 5 (there's probably about 15 reviews). the ones that are positive, love it, but the ones who don't rank it 1 or 2 stars and it's bc they don't dry all the way. i kind of wonder if the steam function of the dryer doesn't somehow interfere with its ability to dry well? or if half of these model of lg dryers are lemons? i'm going with the steamwasher 2487 or 0742 but a non-steam dryer, just in case (plus it's cheaper).

Have you tried the cotton setting... The normal setting doesn't cut it...

Sorry, I didn't mean that any dryer is more efficient, just that the older dryers didn't shut off early when the clothes were dry, they kept running for a while longer.

Re: Energy Star Ratings for Dryers: While it's true that dryers do not qualify for current Energy Star parameters...they actually DO IMPACT Energy Usage. All of the current appliance reviews are very enthusiastic about MOISTURE SENSORS in new model dryers. This considerably reduces excess electric/gas usage over old 'bone dry' settings. It also extends the life of clothes/towels by not 'frying' elastic, synthetics, and other fabrics.

Additional plus to the model we purchased is Remote unit that goes anywhere you are in house. Digital readout of time, etc. enables you to keep track of special loads, and reduces need for those extended 'wrinkle reducing' extended tumble times! Again, more ENERGY SAVINGS.

In general, most of us are going to have to make a few adjustments in 'the way things were' if we are truly committed to adjusting our 'conveniences' to save our planet...and our wallets!

Manufacturers are listening... so speak up! They heard us say, "We want to save ENERGY" so they started from there. Now we have to help them 'tweak' their efforts from our consumer perspective.

Got the DLG7188WM model w/out steam function...how often will you use that...and what about old fashioned spray bottle and quick tumble? It's quite an improvement over Mom spraying Dad's shirts...then freezing them until she got to the ironing part! Did I just date myself?!

Moisture sensors are not new. They've been featured on dryers since the 1960s.

I have LG 2496 and using usualy normal setting, which is medium heat and it takes about 80 minutes for mixed full load (4.00), including towels. If I use cotton setting, it takes about 10 minutes less. I don't use the hottest setting. Somehow I feel the heater will last longer if it isn't on maximum. King size thick comforter takes almost 4 cycles on medium heat-taking it out several times to get even drying.
