You can add canned sliced beets, drained, to the pickle juice.

My mom always keeps it and uses it when she makes potato salad. She makes the best potato salad on the planet. No matter how hard I try, or how many questions I ask, I can never make it like she does. Maybe has to do with the big brown crockery bowl??? Or maybe because she's my mom??

I drink it especially, when, get this, I feel a case of acid reflux coming on (knocks it dead!). Anyway, I've always liked pickle juice -- well, the dill kind, and started drinking it straight when I was a kid.

I'm having a textbook Pavlovian response to your question: my mouth is watering! We used to serve ourselves heaping bowlfuls of pickles (either the store-bought hamburger slices in gallon jars or the homemade garlic dills) and fight over who got to drink the juice. Once or twice we got in trouble because one of the four of us would finish the juice and leave the remaining pickles high and dry. Yum!

Homemade pickles are always a gamble. They were almost always better than good, but occasionally we'd get a whole batch of "feet pickles." I don't understand what causes this phenomenon, but if you ever get a whiff, you'll never forget them. And for goodness sake: DON'T DRINK FEET PICKLE JUICE! Opening new pickle jars always involved a ceremony. The opener would assemble a crowd (not difficult in my childhood home) and we'd watch that person smell the open jar with rapt attention. If the smell didn't put them off, they'd take a bite... and if they declared them "non-feet" we'd all dig in.

This is so fascinating to me - because I can barely eat a pickle without a struggle and the idea of drinking the juice is not appealing (to put it lightly, LOL) to me! Jazmynsom - you have completely sealed the deal for me :)

I do have a cousin who we used to call "Pickle Puss" and for various reasons - she will eat a pickle sandwich with almost anything on a piece of bread - and she has probably drunk the juice but I never knew about it. I'm going to send her the link to this thread and see what she has to say about it!

When my daughter was little she would put pickel juice on small boiled potato or almost any potato dish. She started something now all the cousins ask for pickel juice on potatoes.

Splash a bit in your Bloody Mary! Mixes with gin fairly well... sort of a dirty martini affect.

I've read pickle juice it is great for athletes who want to rehydrate, better than Gatorade because all of the salt/electrolytes and I guess veggie juice. I'm not trying to advertise or anything, but if you have a Cracker Barrel nearby pick up a bottle of Wickles sometime. This post was inspired by those darn things. I finished my jar off in 2 days, eating them right out of the jar, then figured why not and drank the juice lol.

I may try to make some pickles this summer. I made some pear and plum pickles (Alton Brown's recipe) once and they were so good. The recipe called for white wine vinegar and lots of sugar.

I certainly don't pour pickle juice into a glass and quaff it like lemonade, but I do sip at it, and have done so since I was a kid. Of course, by the time I was a toddler, I'd earned the name "pickle puss" from my grandparents because I was always clamoring for pickles.

Pickle juice is also excellent for tummy upsets. Also for hangovers. I also use it to make an herb-dill vinaigrette.

Even though I don't care much for pickles, I do enjoy dill pickle potato chips and I find myself dipping fries or potato chips into the pickle juice on the plate when I get a pickle when I'm out if I forget to say 'hold the pickle'.

I drank pickle juice as a child too (kosher dill) and was laughed at for it. I don't care for the cold pack variety for the juice, but they are my favorite pickle to eat. I've used pickle juice in salad dressings for years and I've also pickled hard boiled eggs in it. They weren't too bad.

When I was a child in Brooklyn, kosher pickles were bought from open barrels. I loved the juice! Of course, it was a lot of fun to walk down the street eating the pickle, and watching people begin to salivate and have to swallow quickly.

I'm a Wickles fan too. Being the cheapskate that I am, I save the Wickles juice, pour out the juice from bread & butter pickles, pour the Wickles juice over the b&b pickles, wait a few weeks, then I'm good to go. I keep refilling the fake jar Wickles with b&bs until I get scared to use the juice again.

I add a lot to potato salad. It's a trick I learned from my mother.

We also add it to tuna salad. But I've never considered drinking it !
