LOL! Funky is so personal - funky for me may be a big yawn for you, or even a really?

So let's have a look at your sample pieces. I think your potential "funky" backsplash tiles are the only thing that keeps your other selections from being individually great, but collectively boring. Explain though - these tiles would run vertically like you show them, where? Behind the stove? And the subways, would they be that great charcoal they're leaning against or something else? Explain, please, where all this stuff is going.

Gotta say, those tiles are striking in a really good way, and I think they will tickle your fancy every time you enter your new kitchen. "Sophisticated, beautiful, functional" is all well and good, but the funky factor is a necessity for anyone with the funky-bone.

You might want to search for the phrase "only one clown." It tends to come up in discussions where someone wants some striking feature in their kitchen, so you might find some inspiration (and a lot of random opinions) on the threads.

For what it's worth, I really like the tile. I probably wouldn't have gone so far as to call it funky, or put it in the same league with pink hair, but it would be personal and unusual.

You might take a look at oldbat2b's kitchen. She had a thread that was at the top just a few days ago showing her beautiful patterned backsplash. When she was deciding whether to go with the pattern, she brilliantly photocopied the tile she was looking at and taped it up in her otherwise finished kitchen (ABB or all but backsplash, we call that).

I really like the tile and I think it's a perfect "pink hair" element for the kitchen. It's what I chose as "the clown" for my last kitchen, in part because it's more affordable to change than countertops/appliances/cabs, etc. If my taste changed or if I sold the house (as I ended up doing), it could be replaced relatively easily. (However, I have some difficulty with proprioception/balance and I've found that vertical lines make me dizzy, so I'd place them horizontally, but obviously that's just my preference!)

One more thing. We used to have a regular series of threads (hoping to revive) called "Design Around This." Each thread had a theme, and posters would put together design elements to fit the theme. The last one we did was bold, patterned tile.

Probably the same paint color, but matching? There are just too many cool door styles out there!
Add in the weird retrofitting I'm doing to suit my habits, and the ideas I have for wine crate doors, reclaimed peninsula backing, Oh, who knows!

I think if you don't get sucked into the "will it resale" black hole, your kitchen can be very cool and you. Vanilla = resale worries to me.

Thanks guys, love the pics, keep 'em coming. I love love love your Fridge. I wanted to have my grandma's stove, but just too much effort to find one and get it working. Mamasheshe's is what our kitchen will look like a bit, so the backsplash idea is great. And SandyPonder's is excellent. Might make me go back to the drawing board.

I hope she doesn't mind, but igloochic's kitchen had 25 different knobs. I'm pretty sure that qualifies as pink hair.

I hope I'm not stepping on kindly forum toes; everybody seems to love subway tile - but - it is really not "pink hair" to me. The accent tiles are beautiful. Would you consider something else to go with them, like a larger square tile? Something where you'd be able to match grout lines? Just a thought.

Cute ideas - showed Sandyponder's kitchen to my husband. It was a bit too funky for him. So I know I can't go that far :)

I agree about the subway tiles. We were looking at adding a colored tile instead. But now I find out that the backsplash we both liked is no longer available, and I can't find it on the internet anywhere. Boo-hoo!

My kitchen reno plans are on hold til DH mends his fractured/destroyed shoulder, and our bank account rebounds a little from him being off work, but this greenman set is going to be my "pink hair", along with a soapstone counter. For many it's one clown too many but it's me, it's my space, and it sings to my heart! I do hope you find what puts your stamp on your space, and you find your pink hair. FTW, I do like the tile you posted, but have to agree I'd run it horizontally. CCK

Wow, that's exellent, I love the black and white tiles. Would totally clash with our colours, but something to think about with our colours. Never seen custommade before. What an excellent site. I wish you hadn't a posted it, I can see many hours of wasted time in my future. But it looks like I might find my perfect tile(s) there. And I really like the green one you chose.
