My dog gets only dog food and the occasional bits of raw fruit and vegetables. Henry loves banana and the ribs from romaine lettuce. He comes running when he hears me open the lettuce drawer in the fridge and keeps his eye on the prize until I put the ribs in his dish.

Wasn't adding garlic to our dogs' food to help in flea control something we have been reading about for years?
So now we aren't supposee to do that, I guess. Just like "they" (whoever "they" are) keep changing their minds about what is or is not good for humans to eat.

Barbara, funny about Henry's love of romaine. My Granddog loves it also. I think she can hear the sound of tearing romaine leaves a mile away.

Where did this list come from? Some are no-brainers but some I'm not so sure about.

Bear used to paw at my leg when I peeled potatoes until I gave him a slice of potato. Whenever I got the bag of potatoes from the pantry he was right by my side waiting and pawing. :)

May i add something? I gave my dog a small dish of vanilla ice cream. She loved it but vomited up a very slimy and smelly mess about 30 minutes later. No more ice cream for her!

My little dog loved ice cream. Never bothered him in the least. Would get a little kiddie cup for him at the DQ on occasion, course he wouldn't eat the whole thing. My one cat loves Wendy's Frostys, especially the vanilla. Many cats are lactose intolerant but she's not, although I'm not totally sure Wendy's Frostys are dairy!. She does like ice cream but not Cool Whip. I don't give my pets much "people" food. Cat or dog food as appropriate and I use good brands like Eukanuba or Iams only. Occasionally some commercial pet treats.

My female used to have a cast iron gut. She'd eat anything and be fine. Since getting the other one, she would occasionally vomit. I attribute it to stress. And the male used to vomit when given the food he was used to. Since switching to the sensitive stomach/digestive care formulas they both have improved. Seldom is there an issue anymore.

No, onions, that causes problems.

We lost our female puppy dog and I wonder to this day if it was because my mom cooks everything with garlic and onions but the onions she gave to her the left overs and one of things it said was onions, ummm.

I cook with garlic too and give our male puppy dog leftover and I try not too, just a bit here and there.

People still give garlic for stopping fleas to their dogs and put it in their doggy treats, home made stuff they make for them.

There are lots out there.

Like broccoli, grapes, tons feed their dogs those items.

But if you also read, like the broccli, they can still have it but small amounts, not all the time and tons of it. Tiny bits won't hurt.

Alot has to do with the amounts given compared to their sizes and weights.

Yes, you do have to be very careful.

I used to buy these cookies from this local bakery with madademai nuts in them, I love them since we went to Hawaii and so I was buying them and eating them. I read that they are not good for dogs, think they cause back legs to be paralazed. I went oh, my, stopped buying and eating them while I have my dog.

so, yes, be very careful and check first before eating something yourself and it might get stolen or you might give to your pet that is begging or it drops.

We have to protect our pets just like you do your kids.

A lot has to do with what their systems can digest easily. They can digest carrots, peas, green beans, and potatoes. Most everything else is hard on their system. A small amount of garlic does not hurt them. You can check receipes for making dog food for your pets on sites from veterinarians and most veggies and human foods are a no no.
Poultry bones splinter and get caught in an animal's throat or intestines causing injury.
A lot that is on the list is just common sense.

Well, Teddy's *favorite* thing in the whole world is to lick out the meager remnants from my breyer's yogurt cup. Probably not a 1/2 teaspoon of yogurt in the whole affair, but it keeps her entertained for at least an hour.

I do wonder about dog's and dairy. I can't imagine a little dairy from time to time would hurt them.

I only have cats, and I've read over the years that cats shouldn't get milk or milk products. Soon as we open the yogurt to put some in a dish, Smudge is right at our feet, out from nowhere.

He'd have his head in the dish practically before the spoon gets in if we'd let him. We always save some in the dish, or spoon out the leavings in the cup and let him lick the spoon. Moderation, as with anything is key.

A woman I know had a cat that would dance when he smelled the brussels sprouts cooking. He loved those! How cute. I wish my cats would eat veggies, but they don't.

When visiting the dairy farm(s) as a youngster I recall the cats dancing in anticipation of getting fresh milk straight from the cows. A big pan was by the barn and the cats would drink lustfully.
As far as I can recall, every year that I would return, the main cats would still be there dancing around the milk pan. Both my uncles milked, one of my boyfriends parents milked, along with several other friends. The cats would mouse for milk! If they were allergic, they didn't show it. In fact they never showed any signs of distress and we played with them all the time.
I'm not saying anyone should give their pets milk but that someones idea of what should happen isn't set in concrete.
Possibly the cats put up with intestinal distress for the drug of their choice. Who knows?!
Logic tells me, animals like people are all different in what they can eat. Just because some people can't eat peanut butter doesn't mean others wouldn't benifit from it. On the other hand I'm pretty sure moderation is a key for most of the foods that humans or animals eat.
I have three dogs, two with iron guts, one that can't look at anything but dry dog food without throwing up. Poor baby.

cynic - a woman in our pug group told me grapes were toxic to dogs. I'd never heard that, so googled "toxic to dogs" and this list came up over and over again. Not sure which site I got it from...
