Doggie training classes

Not to hi-jack Marilyn's post, where she mentioned her doggies going to training classes. I took our Max, a border collie mix, to obedience class. Hubs likes to say that Max learned to sit and Dottie didn't learn anything. LOL Max had a hard time because the class was held in a school gym with hard floors and with his claws he didn't like walking there, as many of the other large breed dog had trouble too. Dottie

Yes, it is the owners that have to learn. These classes are held above the vet's offices and it is a large room and no slick floors. It is some kind of black rubber matting all over the floor. Plastic lawn chairs for those that want to come and watch. Last evening they practiced the sit, stay and come. So all of that played into what they did last night. They only have two more classes, and I hope I can go.

Marilyn S. That sounds like it should be. Slick floors are so distracting, we only went to two sessions, because Max just didn't want to walk. Good luck on your doggie-training, I'm sure it makes life much easier for both pet & owner. Dottie

In the past couple years, my building "officially" allowed dogs and cats and there is an assortment here. I do see some owners bringing their dogs out to walk (and do their do) but I expect most may do it out on the balcony (they may be putting down some newspaper for them to go on and that can be rolled up and discarded or in a litter box). If your pets are used to grass, you could consider creating a little raised-bed area on the cement by putting down some plastic, maybe adding a thin layer of soil, and then get a piece of grass sod to lay on that. Surrounding it with some wood strips to create a mini raised bed would neaten it a bit. Then the dogs could learn to use that patch and you could reseed and make sure it gets watered to keep it growing.

my 4th choo choo train is 5 years old.. and two leaves.. the size of my hand ... i almost hit it with roundup .. just to me out of its misery ... piece of carp .... but i may have seen a second while putting down a hundred gallons of roundup/credit in the last 3 days ... too bad i coverd all the beds.. and have no clue where i saw it... thanks for the pix.. keep em coming... ken

Okay, good information. And Kudos to you for adopting and what a regal dog !!! My first concern would be a physical problem and the vet NEEDS to check out your dogs back and back end to make certain there is nothing wrong physically. Nerve problems in the back can make it so your dog has NO IDEA of when it is time to go. You wrote: "~ We never yell or hit him when he has an accident. We just show him and tell him, "NO . . . bad dog! Kennel!" Pick up the poop and take it and him to the kennel where we put it down and say, "Kennel . . . good dog, kennel" We then meticulously clean the rug using a good quality dog accident cleaner & deodorizer. " This connect negativity with bathroom works and you should really stop doing it. THIS "Ronin has an accident perhaps once or twice a week, although never peeing. All the other times, we/I just take him out to the kennel and lock him in until he goes, when we let him right back in, praising him, "Good dog, kennel!"." Is also not a good idea. Next I would call the foster person and ask if they had the same problem. If all that turns out to be normal and this is a new behavioral problem I suggest a couple of things - First you have had the dog 3 weeks and he is going through a period of transition - so you are bound to have something come up. You wrote that he is okay with other dogs and people and he gets kennelled on a rgular basis. All okay *BUT* you have failed to write ANYTHING about his daily walking routine!!! This dog should be taken out on a leash walk at least 3 times a day. For at least 15 minutes a day. NO LESS. Im not tqlaking just a quickie around the block where the dog sniffs a couple of bushes. Im talking find a good fire road or an area where your dog can really get in a good pant. DONT let him stop and sniff the bushes or rocks or anything else JUST a good walk at a good clip. Just when you are heading back to the car - let your dog stop and sniff the bushes. Hopefully the regualr walks will help alot - they usually do. Be careful not to go to the same place for his walks. I suspect your new charge is bored, and not stimulated enough. But that is just based on what you wrote....When your dog does do its duty. It is important to first give your dog a command to poop - it should be unemotional. Just a fact - go make a meadow muffin....when the dog does, praise him highly. As if he has just brought you a bag with a thousand dollars in it. If your dog likes privacy (mine does) just make certain you bring a longer leash so he can hide behind a bush or tree for his duties. Another part of the training is to take his present and take it outside to a place where you will walk your dog daily. Be certain to stop and let him sniff his stuff, give the unemotional command and praise him....good luck - let us know how it goes.

It isn't my Izzi that is getting trained it is two of my youngest Grand fur babies. I will pick up some pointers for Izzi though. I wish I had paid for her to go and had Mike train her for me. I know I could not run and get down on the floor like they have them do.

I wish they had something like that up here! There is a class offered periodically but its 125 miles away and no way I could make it.
DH's friend used to have a very well trained dog, she was amazing. She was a mix breed but large and they said they knew they had to do it because of her size Fetch, sit,stay,quiet,I am not sure what all she knew. He'd throw a frisbee for her, first put her in sit. That dogs eyes glowed when she saw it and knew it was playtime. She also knew she couldn't move til he told her to get it. They would play a game with her. Take the remote to Daddy or Mommie and she would take it ever so gently and give it to whoever they said!
My dogs are house trained and that is about it. Our Doxie listens much better than the Chihuahua. He has an attitude problem! LOL I still love them both to pieces, but life could of course be easier!

We would love to begin training classes but we have only one trainer in the area. I won't go to him because I disagree with some of his tactics. Would NEVER use a water bottle to squirt my dog in the face. And this trainer insists you use his command terms. So I would have 2 dogs speaking one language and another dog speaking another.

A friend has a young german shephard that is a horrible hole-digger. The trainer recommended the use of a shock collar.... another tactic I would never use.

Connie, you can get a book on dog training at the library. Then just use small treats and work with your dog 5 or 10 minutes a day. Start out with the sit command and then the stay and work up from there. Just a couple of commands every week.

Petsmart offers dog training here. Not sure how great their classes are though.

If I were to get a another dog, I think I'd buy one of the Cesar Millan dvds on training.

What I really need is a cat training dvd. lol

I took my dog to Puppy Kindergarden. Helped her calm down. She was scared of traffic, visitors in my house, just about everything. She learned to come when called, walk on a leash, and best of all, she became totally housebroken. Best thing for a dog. The "training" is mostly for the owner. You learn to be consistent but loving. Dogs learn by receiving treats and praise, not punishment.

I watch Cesar Millan all the time but I think sometimes the dog will react better when he/she sees how the other dogs respond. I had my puppy for a walk today and she did very well with me but my husband doesn't share the same experience when he takes her out. I told him today that I was going to sign him up at Petsmart for training classes....and yes, he needs the training as much as Georgy does!

I would not recommend PetSmart for training classes. I went to a potty training class there that lasted just 10 minutes or less with the trainer talking very fast to the two of us enrollees. Then she walked us around the store trying to sell us products we did not need. She said their spray to clean up puppy accidents was far superior to Nature's Remedy. She also said their puppy pads were the best and if we used these products we could have our puppies completely trained in one or two weeks. Fat chance!
