Maytag EpicZ washer/dryer

havn't seen much info about these or many reviews online. guess i should have asked around here... but anyways just bit the bullet and ordered a set.

anyways, just thought i'd sign up here and say hey. found lots of useful info here in the forum when doing our research. thought i'd start another thread here on these machines in case anyone wants to discuss... positives or negatives or whatever.

our situation is an old house where the only place for laundry is in a closet with some size requirements that eliminate most of what is out there. can only fit smaller stacked units. most of the front load stackable sets are too tall for our space.

what we found to fit, was the whirlpool duet sport/kenmore he2/maytag epicz models, the frigidaire affinity/gallery models, bosch axxis, and an asko 24" model.

we really liked the larger bosch unit that we checked out, but since we needed stacking it wouldn't work. we did find a local store with the smaller bosch axxis and a smaller asko that would fit, but the washers just seemed WAY to small for us. boy that axxis seems tiny! seemed like we'd have to be doing way to many small loads of laundry.

we checked out the whirlpool variants and the frigedaires at sears. after looking them over and tugging on all the parts, we felt we liked the build of the whirlpools more. also checked prices at lowes, home depot, and best buy.

the best deals seemed like the duet sport 8300 (no heat) at lowes, and the epicz 600 (with heat) at home depot. from the user guide, besides the heat, it looked like the epicz added 1 more shock for vibration control, and i didn't know if that and the heat was worth the extra $$$.

we also had a 10% off entire purchase coupon at lowes. i called all 3 lowes in my area and got different quotes from each one. one said they could only do their sale price or price match home depots sale price, but could not add our coupon. the second said they could take our 10% off coupon on top of their stock unit (duet), but not on the epicz.

the third lowes said they could match home depots price, match home depots 10% off sale price, AND then take another 10% off... nice! so we ended up getting the epicz 600 set at that third lowes.

then at checkout we were supposed to get a mail-in rebate for $65 to reimburse delivery... well that printed out... as well as a second mail-in rebate for $100, that we were not told about or expecting. sweet! plus our local electric company is going to give us a $75 rebate for energy star washer. so we are pretty happy with the purchase.

hopefully it works out as well when we actually get the machines! seems like some people don't have the best experiences with whirlpool units, and there isn't much info out there on the epicz yet. but like i said there wasn't much that we could find that would fit our space. and we got the extended warranty coverage, so we are hoping it all works out well.

anways, just thought i'd share. will try to post some info after i get it installed. ok sorry for the long first post!

I just logged in to this forum looking for information on hte EpicZ. I have space limitations as well and had been set on the LG stacking with dryer controls on the bottom of the dryer. Last week when I went to place my appliance order, I learned that LG has discontinued this model. They had only 2 dryers left and both were electric. Since I am set on gas I decided to consider my other choice the, Frigidare gallery. The gallery is an OK machine and I had one in our last house. Today the appliance SP emailed me about the EpicZ, saying that it is shorter and less deep than most others so I am hoping that this may be a good alterntive.

I had a Maytag Washer that was 35 years old, still worked great, & never had a repair. I also had a very old Hotpoint gas dryer but quite often it would not light without fiddling with it. So we replaced them both probably about 5 years with a "Matching Pair" of Maytag front loaders. Both have been trouble free. Gary

OlympicEagle, the Maytag toploader you'd buy *today* is virtually *identical* to your KitchenAid toploader (and to Whirlpool, Roper, Estate, Admiral, some Amana, and most Kenmore toploaders). :-) Consumer Reports data is in reference to a toploader design Maytag used toward the end, before Whirlpool bought the company. Maytag's Neptune frontloader design, which is the source of their tarnished frontloader reputation, is still being used (or was until a short time ago) under Crosley label, and possibly Amana. There were some redesigns that largely fixed the original problems. Maytag-labeled Neptunes were still on the market until late last year. My neighbor bought one from Lowe's. The Maytag Epic frontloader (NOT the Z) is essentially identical to what was previously the KitchenAid Ensemble frontloader. The "Z" may be akin to Whirlpool's Duet Sport offering.

Maybe an eco theme this time - some vines and leaves perhaps? :-) I was looking into an Affinity for my parents since it is not as deep as many of the other models, and the one thing I didn't like about it was that the warm temp is set at 78 degrees - that is one degree warmer than cold on my machine. It seems the preset warm and cold wash temperatures have gone down since the FL first came out in force in the US. My HE3t, one of the first generation models, uses a warm temp of 104F, and a cold temp of 77F. Hot is 127F, and extra hot 153F. My washer, like some other models, do not heat the water on the "normal" cycle. When compared to the Bosch, which heats on all cycles that may sound like a negative, but realistically, it is not. Since the ATC aims for 104 for a warm wash, by the time the wash ends, the temp sometimes drops to 95 or so - still higher than the 90F warm Bosch wash. If I do want the heater to engage, I just select a different cycle. I suspect that the newest Whirlpool and Kenmore models have lower wash temps. I haven't used one to be able to actually measure the water temp, but can only surmise since they claim to be significantly more efficient than my model. It seems that the different brands have gotten into an efficiently pissing contest. Also, the Kenmore HE2t is the sister model of the Epic Z and Duet Sport. I recommended the HE2t to an acquaintance, and she still loves it after a couple of years. Joe

We are choosing a new washer/dryer set and would like to buy something in the mid-range. I had a Miele set in our previous home for the last 15 years, which I absolutely loved, but think that for half the price I might be able to get something that works well enough. There seems to have been a lot of changes in the mid-range since I last made a purchase. I'm considering either the new Maytag Maxima steam set or a Whirlpool Duet steam set. I want to have something that will do a good job on delicates (something that Miele does extremely well) and will also sanitize my micro fibre cleaning cloths. Any comments or suggestions?
