Buying my Bosch Nexxt 500, usage tips from current owners?

Hi everyone! You were all so helpful when I was trying to decide which washer to buy I though maybe you would be willing to give me some tips on using my new washer. Here is what I know for sure:

1. Use HE detergent (I have a stock of All Small & Mighty Free and Clear HE liquid) I must use a free and clear detergents because of multi allergies and skin conditions-if anyone has similar problems and has had good luck with another detergent, I would love to hear about it.

2. Leave the door open between washes.

That is about all I know for sure. so...

1. What about lint, is there a filter that needs to be cleaned?

2. Are my fuzzy sweaters going to be a problem?

3. What about washing large items like comforters? Do I need to use a certain cycle for good results? Lower the spin speed so it does not unbalance?

4. What about the towel issue I have read about here? How do I keep towels soft?

5. Is it ok to use fabric softener? I use a free & clear softener, if cloths are too rough I can't stand the feel of them on my skin.

6. How do you seperate your lint givers and receivers? My lint givers appear to be receivers too, does any one else have this problem? Even sweater bags don't seem to help.

7. I 've read that small items should be put in bags. How small? Do I need to worry about socks? No small children, I'm the smallest person in the house.

If I seem a bit crazy to you - my husband would agree. He would also go out and buy the cheapest top loader he could find at the first store he walked into! Thanks for your help. Any thing you can help me with will be greatly appreciated!

The best advice I can give is (a) read the manual, and follow the advice on load sizes and cycle choice until you get to know the machine better, (b) watch for oversudsing, and adjust detergent (quantity or brand) accordingly, (c) the machine will rinse much better than your TL, especially if you use the extra rinse option, so detergent additives might be less of an issue than you think, (d) fabric softener is OK, but do try a micture of 1:3 FS to white vinegar instead. (We just use the vinegar, and add it in the bleach compartment instead of the FS compartment.)

In almost 3 years of ownership, we've never lost a sock or had a problem with lint, and we don't use the little bag that came with the machine. - DR

My advice would be to avoid using softener sheets in the dryer. The residue clogs up the lint filter and leaves a coating on the sensor bars that has the dryer shutting off before the clothes are dry.

To clean the lint filter, soak it in an inch-deep bath of vinegar in a square pan. Wipe the sensor bars with a cloth dipped in vinegar to get them good and clean.

Oh, and make sure your vents are free of lint blockage.

After 2+ years of ownership now I will say I would easily buy this machine again... That said I have had 2 service calls... the first time the pump stopped... it was replaced and it's run great ever since...until I washed a rubber backed bath rug and the backing fell apart into crumbs and plugged the line... service cleaned that out for me and it's been great ever since... now that second time was entirely my fault... I knew the backing was old and delicate... but I was trying to push one last wash and a month or so out of the rug... dumb move... Personally the only 'guts' I've gotten near is to open the round 'access' on the bottom front which allows you to open the clean out prior to the pump... when I've checked there (other than with the rug incident) there is never anything of consequence... and it's solely been an 'execrise' in how to do it... That said... be aware that a small item (kids socks, small panties, etc) will occassionally end up in the gasket by the door, and then you have to decide if you're going to hold onto it for another load, or give it a good squeeze out and toss it into the dryer... I have found if I put this type of item in the washer first when loading the problem does not occur as often... maybe once per month or two... not great, but not a deal breaker in my mind. From comments some have posted here is seems that some bosch models do not have a spin option on the dial any longer, so I'd watch for that as IF you end up unbalanced you can get a 'soggy' load at the end and then you just need to re-spin the load after rearranging it... again, not frequent maybe I've done this 3-4 times in 2+ years??? but if you don't have the option to select only a spin, you'd have to rewash needlessly. If you don't currently have a fl machine, be aware, cycles are longer... I find my typical normal regular wash time is about 1 hour per load, unless I select the 'quick' wash of ~25 minutes. good luck with whatever you end up with.

The differences among the 500/700/platinum are primarily cosmetic. Where one has gray trim, another has chrome - that sort of thing. The 500 has a quick wash, 700 has a waterproof cycle (you add the chemicals to re-apply waterproofing to fabrics. I didn't think this would be useful for me). The 700 adds a couple of extra hours of wrinkle guard, where it tosses the clothes every few minutes, and BEEPS again, after the cylcle is complete. 500 does this for one hour, 700 for 3 hours. The 700 will let you delay the wash for 24 hours, less for the 500 (but I can't remember how long since I don't find this function useful for me). That's all I can think of.

1. How to load so the clothing or sheets don't tangle so horribly? You know, my Miele does some tangling too and I think that's just the way frontloaders are? I just separate as I remove from the washer -- it has not injured my clothing. 2. When I buy dark cotton tee shirts, the shirt starts to fade around the collar and hem after just a couple of washes, and the collar seems to look ratty after around 6 months. Again, I've been using regular/cotton on warm. I had this problem when I used Tide/detergents with optical brighteners. The warm wash on your Bosch might be considerably warmer than the warm wash on your previous toploader, and although you are using the recommended amount of detergent or less, the Bosch is probably using so little water that the detergent water is really more concentrated than with a toploader. I would try cutting back on detergent as well as switching to a detergent without optical brighteners. You could also try washing on "cold" (not tap cold) to further preserve darker colors. Similarly, my husbands cotton and cotton/poly dress shirts have had excessive wear at the collar tips and darks fade quickly and some of the material pills. I have had to replace shirts at about the one year mark, whereas with my old top loader, the shirts lasted a few years. I do turn them inside out. Any suggestions on these two? I am wondering if the Permanent press cycle would be better? On dress shirts, yes I would use the permanent press or even the delicates cycle and "cold" water (which is 30C or 86F), maybe less detergent and/or a different detergent. 3. Sheets- all my sheets have had permanent creases put into them in the top hem of the sheet. I am unable to iron these out. Again, I run sheets on hot regular/cotton cycle with extra rinse. Is there a better cycle to run sheets on so they don't get creases like this, and tangled so horribly? As far as I can figure, more wrinkles are a way of life with frontloaders? That's how it seems to me. You could try a lower spin speed (the trade off is it won't be as clean of a rinse). I would also try drying on a gentler heat over a longer period of time, and removing while still slightly damp and iron it while damp. Re: dustmites -- if you can't figure out a way to wash it... you can freeze it instead. Wrap in a garbage bag and freeze for 24-48 hours.

This issue was driving me absolutely crazy, especially with a soaking wet comforter in my machine this morning after repeated rinse cycles. Furious at Bosch engineers who for some reason seem to think a spin-only cycle is unimportant. But I found this fantastic tip from Timmster over at FixYa, which I'm posting to help others. Not only did I get to do the spin only using the easy diagnostics codes, but whatever problem was stopping the machine from spinning properly before was resolved!: 'Had a repair man here for the same issue. Learned two things: 1. Too much detergent causes 'soap lock.' The electronics will get confused when there's too many suds left after a rinse and shut the spin cycle down. That's why re-running the entire cycle without more detergent solves the problem. Use less detergent. 2. There is a way to manually get the spin cycle to run using diagnostics codes. Here's what my guy did: a. Washer selection knob in OFF position. b. Hold the 'Spin Selection' and 'Delay Start' buttons down at the same time. c. While holding those two buttons, turn the Washing selector knob to Permanent Press-Cold. d. Keep the buttons held down until the LCD control panel reads 'P:01' d. Release buttons. e. Use the 'Spin Selection' button to cycle thru the codes. Stop when it reads 'P:04' which is the spin cycle. f. Press 'Start/Pause' button to begin the spin cycle. 1. No lint fitter that needs regular cleaning.

2. Just wash fuzzy sweaters on the wool or delicate cyle They'll be fine.

3. For large items like comforters or pillows, they must be combined with smaller items so the machine can find a good balance. Otherwise it won't spin.

4. My towels are perfectly soft. Stiff towels aren't clean , too much or too little detergent.

5. Yes, but use only a small amount,

6. I don't worry about lint, it hasn't been a problem,

7. The only things I put in bags are bras, just to protect them. I did notice, when my sister was here, that baby socks can get pushed into the gap in the gasket, where they don't get clean, so maybe they should be in a bay. One bag comes with the machine.

I use the bags for small things (ALL socks, tiny undies) and for bras.... I've had my socks, DH socks, kids/teens undies all end up (one at a time) in the gasket by the door when I don't do this.... not a big deal... when I sort, I bag...

I always use free/clear detergents and always use the extra rinse (skin issues also) and don't have any problems with skin or softness... I haven't used softner since buying these....

I do sweaters inside out (always done them this way)

Be prepared for the wash cycle to take longer than you expect...

AND babysit those installers with your level handy... they typically will NOT bring one... make sure they tighten the lock nots on the feet
