Special trip yesterday....

Yesterday my mom and I went to Salisbury to see my two sons, visit the Amish Market, and have dinner at their favorite restaurant. Here are some highlights:

~ first stop was to get some fresh strawberries from a pick-your-own farm just up the road from DS#2's house - they were sweet, really ripe, and unsprayed

~ Yoder's Amish Market, Jake Alexander Blvd, I got peppercorns, Italian Seasoning herbs, Thai Jasmine rice, small red beans, green onion cheese, sweet Lebanon bologna, golden raisins and dried chipped beef (had a birthday gift certificate to use)

~ next, downtown to the Salty Caper for pizza and beer, 3 small pizzas to sample and a Son of a Peach beer for me; downtown Salisbury has been revitalized to restore the original store fronts and attract new downtown businesses

~ then a ride around the lovely old neighborhoods nearest downtown to see some great old homes, the "painted ladies" with lots of gingerbread trim

~ we also left with some locally raised chicken and a jar of strawberry freezer jam from DS#2.

A very fun afternoon.....we will do this again!

Sounds like a fun day with Mom, I'll bet she really enjoyed the time together.

OT: How far are you from Southern Seasonings? I've always wanted to revisit it since you took us there.

That does sound like fun. That's a lot of food and it all sounds wonderful, especially the strawberries. Ours are a few weeks away. The season seems to last about a minute and a half!

I did not know there are Amish in NC. All I have to do is smell Lebanon Bologna and I am transported back to my childhood.

Corralitos Market is great. However, the condition of many of the potted roses at ROYT is not so great, at least the last time I was there which was this past spring. The plants don't look like they're being taken care of and many were potbound and on the decline. You should look into Russian River Roses in Healdsburg (I know, opposite direction) as they have many roses in 5 gallon pots and all they have is very well cared for and healthy. Hi, it is not easy for me,to say, what I am looking for, conserning wb. First, I like witchÂ´s brooms, second, what is imortant - different colors - blue, gold..., density, different habitus /pendulous, flat, narrow types etc.. But very important for me is to combine this mostly tiny trees with other bigger trees on my witchÂ´s broom garden, to obtain marvelous dynamic garden composition. Sorry for my english, maybe you understand me..., some photos from dwarf conifers garden I enclose, better than thousand words.... Went hosta shopping yesterday...

Gesila: Baker's Acres is right around the corner from Amity. They call themselves neighbors. Definitely worth a stop. Yes, Wade and Gatton's is amazing. I can spend hours wandering through their gardens. Thousands of mature hosta, all labelled. Their pricing is by the division, so hosta can get quite expensive there, especially if you want a larger one. Sounds like you've been there. Another place to visit is Wade Gardens (Mansfield) Owned by Van Wade's son. Probably my favorite Ohio hosta seller. You can get large(huge) multi division plants for very reasonable prices. They have a good selection, though obviously not as extensive as Wade and Gatton. And if you can go a couple hours further south a very interesting place is Cory's Wildflower Gardens in Chillicothe. Owned and run by 87 year old Mr. Cory for the past ?? years. In a residential, but wooded, area he has 7 acres of hosta and wildflower gardens. He is quite the character. I love to go there. Barb

Rachel...this body ain't gettin any younger so please keep me in mind when you are ready to go public! I'm aging here in Michigan but so want to go back and spend some time hiking around in the Rockey Mountains in Colorado Springs, I miss it so! 10 + years older and coming from sea level could be quite a challenge!

Our strawberries are about a month away too, those sound delicious. I really love fresh local berries, the ones that are shipped from other states are seldom good when they get here, I think it's the variety they grow that withstands shipping but doesn't taste great. Sigh.

It sounds like a very good time and I'll bet your Mom had a great time. Plus homemade jam and locally raised chicken, that's got to be good.

Cathy, A Southern Season is in Chapel Hill, only about 30 minutes from my house, plus there is a Whole Foods and a Trader Joes, all in the same area.

OK that's it the kid is going to visit UNC-CH just so I can go back to A Southern Season, lol just kidding.

Please send me some green onion cheese and 'Son of a Peach' beer.

What a lovely day and a great haul!

Ah, strawberries. I'm still finding the styrofoam ones here. So disappointing.

Sounds like a perfect day for all! I'm glad you are able to spend time with your Mom (and your sons). You made the right decision about how to spend your Saturdays and you are rewarded with a wonderful family outing and good food and beer! What more can you ask for?
