Is Anyone Else a Fan Of Midsomer Murders?

I recently joined Netlix and discovered the British TV series Midsomer Murders. I had been a big fan of Columbo and something about this series reminds me of that show. Along with the characters and plots I am also enjoying the views of the English countryside. The low ceilinged cottages and gardens are especially appealing to me. I was just wondering if there are any other fans of this show among the KTers.

"raises hand and waves madly"..we are! English husband delights in trying to solve the sometimes complicated, twisted plots with only half the information Barnaby and Ben have, and I spend the entire episode loving the homes, cottages, scenery, and spotting other actors from other series! I've yet to sort out the plots before the end, but we still look forward to the show each Monday.

Mare, have you ever seen the series Rosemary and Thyme? It was on here in Ontario a few years ago, but we stopped watching as it was easy from the first 3 mins to figure out "who done it". Felicity Kendal was in that series, and used to star in "Good Neighbours", from way back.

As an aside, we came across Doc Martin the other night. So very glad to have the series back on our screen!

Enjoy the series, and have fun solving those plots in murder riddled Midsomer!

Lavender or purple will likely be the color of the next CM we put in our yard. I prefer purple, mainly because it should give a more appealing contrast to the blue of the vitex we envision planting next to it. I can understand the interest in pruning to maintain a certain "fill" of foliage and bloom in a certain space. What I don't understand is how that awful, whacked look can be tolerated, even for a moment, while awaiting the return of the next season's growth in that desired look. Not meaning to sound all self-righteous here...it's just my gardening style, to use plants that are suited for the space available to them, instead of filling a space with a plant that has to be pruned to hideous (my opinion) to keep the plant within bounds, even if the view of the whacked look is only temporary. If I put, say, a CM variety with a mature size of 15 feet in a 5-foot space, that would just be too much work for me to keep the plant in bounds every year. I would want a plant with a mature size that fills the 5-foot space. I'm not a crape myrtle expert. But experience and intuition tell me (correctly I believe) a couple of things about the "radical annual pruning" of CMs (just my alternative term for the "murder"): (1) It weakens the plants overall; (2) It possibly deprives the plants and visiting wildlife of mutually beneficial, balanced and natural interaction, and (3) While enabling more concentrated bloom and dense top-growth, it raises risk of losing what might be preferred (a more appealing resultant appearance, that is) to storms or pests because of the naturally weaker new growth. My memory is always "dumping," but I believe I remember seeing some summer storm damage to CMs that were whacked the year before. So all the CMs had for foliage and bloom were the short, weak new branches all clustered together. Maybe I just saw some photos of that damage. Anyway, the damage made them look as if they had never leafed-out and bloomed at all, because all the new growth was torn and bent down, if not torn completely off. Those images, more than any others, swayed me away forever from the "murder" manner of pruning.

Since it's been all about "Something's Gotta Give" I thought that Nancy Meyers' follow up movie "The Holiday" needed a closer look. Just as the star of Something's Gotta Give was the Hamptons house itself, the star of the "The Holiday" wasn't really Cameron Diaz or Kate Winslet, but their two homes, one in Los Angeles and one in the English Countryside, respectively. And in another connection between the two movies, the production team was led Jon Hutman - but Beth Rubino, so wonderful on the set of SGG, was absent for The Holiday. And just as with Something's Gotta Give, Nancy Meyers' personal interior designer has photos of "The Holiday" houses on his web site, but he is not mentioned in the film credits. The Holiday, coming so soon after Something's Gotta Give received a lot of prepublicity hype concerning its premise: two women swap houses for the Christmas vacation and both find love. For lovers of the SGG house, a new Nancy Meyers movie about TWO houses was almost too good to be true ! Jim

Thank you all for sharing! So many of you have mentioned excellent books that I had not mentioned. The Historian, for example. Others, like Kristin Lavransdatter, I still want to read, have gone through the trouble to buy, and look at them every now and again as they wait patiently on my shelf. Frieda, I have read Collapse and found it hard to put down. That book formed the basis for many side books into the societies mentioned therein. I have Guns, Germs, and Steel; see note in above paragraph re: books waiting patiently. As for 1491, I KNOW I read it. I remember bits of it, but cannot find it listed in my book journal. I have searched back to 2001 and found nothing. This is odd as I find a perverse sort of satisfaction logging a book into my journal. I also read Tony Horwitz's A Voyage Long and Strange (only 445 pages)which covers a bit of the same ground, but I do not believe I am confusing the two books. annpan, your post made my laugh. You've been robbed! Love it! I recently read the new Elizabeth George book. Most of her Lynley titles are doorstops. But I cannot truly put any of them on a "fan club" list. They were okay, some better than others, but nothing I truly remember, nothing that was thought-provoking. And this last one felt choppy, disconnected, and just plain "off". PAM

Because we're SO OLD and have been retired SO LONG...there is almost nothing on BritBox that we haven't seen AGES ago -- especially since this material is the sort of thing we have always preferred over most US programing. (I'm trying to think of some of the first comedies we discovered all those years ago, but can only come up with "The Two Ronnies".)

I love the British sitcoms, and their mysteries. I'm wondering if Doc Martin is being shown on our PBS, as I really loved the earlier shows.

I loved Midsomer Murders, I watched them on A&E. As I remember it was on Sundays. I often taped and watched later.

Love Doc Marten and I'm waiting for it tonight on my PBS station . The countryside is remarkable. I would love visiting Cornwall.

I think we are on Series 20. Let's see, with three murders per episode...how can there be anyone left in that county? There must be some, as they are still being filmed. Waiting for more of "Doc Martin".

You'd probably also enjoy "Lovejoy" -- light comedy and pretty views. "Hamish MacBeth" is another.

I don't know what we'd watch if there were no old British TV series available from our library. We watch "New Tricks", "George Gently", "Judge John Deed", and "Garrow's Law".

Love that series! Used to watch on television but DirecTV hasn't shown for quite a while. Didn't think about looking at the library-will do that next week. The scenery was beautiful, the phrases/wordings used sometimes was hard for me to understand. Didn't have DVR then so couldn't record.

We subscribed to Netflix thru Wii a few months ago-I was so excited when I looked online & saw the offerings. We got the wireless modem, etc. but apparently, during the 30-day free trial, not everything is offered. After a few days, we canceled it. Not worth the $8/monthly fee for what little was available.

I thought of more: "Foyle's War", "Inspector Lewis", and "Inspector Lynley". DH used to watch "Inspector Morse" but I grew weary of the lead character's untreated depression! (Felt the same about the "Wallander" cop.)

I'm up to approx episode #25. The actress playing Cully appears to be a different one from earlier episodes. Is it my imagination?

Another Midsomer fan here. :o) Hub and I both love the series. Even the mediocre episodes are great because of all the gorgeous scenery. We also love Doc Martin, New Tricks, Murder in Suburbia, The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries, Jonathan Creek, Murder in Mind, Pie in the Sky, Wallander, and the Miss Marple movies with Margaret Rutherford.

Not yet, but it's on my Netflix Instant Queue so somebody from the KT must have recommended it. Perhaps I'll start tonight.

Hayri, you might consider trying Netflix again. I don't know how many months you have to commit to (if any), but it seems to me they offer a wide selection of movies and shows.

Oh, yes! "Pie in the Sky" -- saw the last of those last year...fooey!

mare -- Yes, the Cully actress changes, as does DCI Barnaby's sergeant. Speaking of which, I really enjoy the second actress who plays Doc Marten's receptionist; the first one wasn't as right for the role, IMO. We've seen 'Doc' in another series, "Reggie Perrin" -- not as consistently funny, but some hilarious bits.

DH is more adept than I at spotting actors and actresses as they appear across the board in these episodes. Many seem to find 'regular work'!

Chisue, I'm also pretty good at noticing the same actor popping up in different series. I thought I noticed the change a couple of episodes ago, but when I Google it, Wikipedia and IMDb gives the credit to only one actress. Thanks to the KT I have extended my Instant Queue to include "Doc Martin". I'll have to look for others mentioned. I can't decide whether to start watching a new series before I finish Midsomer, or finish Midsomer then start another. I think I'll do the latter, then when there are no more Midsomers to watch I won't be so let down, I'll have the others to look fwd to. I'm really enjoying my streaming Netflix. I've also watched a few documentaries and some older movies. Unlike TV, there's always something new to watch on a cold winter's evening.
