question about laundry machine set up

Our house was built in the 50's and the washer and dryer are currently sitting on top of a wood plank that is raised 4" off the ground, the wood is 2" thick which means the washer and dryer is 6" total off the ground.

Is it necessary to have it off the ground like this? They are top loading and very difficult to reach into.

Just another side note, in case it matters, they are located in the garage. I would love to redo this area and somehow separate the machines from the actual garage by putting some kind of a rubber mat to mark of the area. What do you think?

TIA!
