Need help with Laundry/Mud Room set up
Hello!
Looking for creative solutions to maximize storage in our laundry/mudroom.
Plumbing/electrical is already roughed in, so the washer and dryer stay. The door at the "top" comes from the back porch. Pocket door feeds to the kitchen. Electric panel is on the wall behind the exterior door. I'm left with about 4' wide of floor to (9') ceiling wall space next to dryer. Washer is top-loader, so will need clearance above to open.
Things I'd like: storage for broom, mop, maybe vacuum, storage for laundry and cleaning supplies, rod to hang clothes, either/both countertop for folding laundry or/and seat for putting on shoes.
Suppose you could add some sort of shelving/cabinets on the wall directly across from the exterior door. Overall, my style is open, airy, transitional, so I'm not a huge fan of bulky pieces (but could live with it).

Comments (6)At first glance the floor drain idea sounds like a pretty good idea, but when you think about it, the only thing seperating the inside of your lovely home from a filthy sewer, is the U-bend water trap in the floor drain. No problem if you flush it regularly, but if you let it dry up you're going to be waking up to the lovely smell of sewer gas. However, this would work if it can be connected to another drain, and then have both drains flow into a U-bend trap. That way the other drain would presumably keep the U-bend closed off. I'm not a plumber though, so please treat this as speculation, not a suggestion. As far as putting the washer in a tub is concerned, I tend to agree with your sales person. The risk is that it will lower the friction between the washer and the floor, and your washer will start walking all over the place. It's true that a washer on a pedestal is going to weigh 250 lbs plus, but the problem is resonance between the washer and the floor, not that the washer isn't weighing enough, because these resonances are specifically caused by the washer being so heavy. So, if you have a vibration problem with the washer, it's specifically because the 250 lb weight of the washer is interacting with your flexible floor. Weedmeister's suggestion regarding manual single handle water valves actually has quite a bit of merit, because if you think about it, you realize that you're dealing with probabilities here. Let's say for aurguments sake that the odds of you having a broken water hose is 100,000:1, and the chance that you would forget to turn the hose off is 100:1, you can calculate the chances of you having a flood as 10,000,000:1, and you've effectively turned the remote possibility of a flood from a broken hose into something that's impossible for all practical purposes. Here are the main reasons for the addition: current kitchen is far too small (9x10'11") - the 4 of us enjoy cooking and baking and we need more space for people and storage move the laundry up to the main floor from the basement create an entry/mud room for our family to come and go would like to have upright freezer on main floor too half bath on main floor The attached photos have the layout and our needs and wants on them. Comments (4)I think I would rob some square footage from the hall closet and turn it into a walk in shower in the mud room I would add hooks and drying racks for all the wet stuff, boots, rain gear, umbrellas, waders, snow suits etc... You can also pop a kid or a dog in there pretty easy for a quick fix if needed. I put a narrow rack on the wall for dry shoes and boots. 4 lockers on outside door wall, be sure to have drawers for hats, gloves, scarves, glasses, goggles, ear protection etc... also have room in upper cubbies for helmets and ball caps etc.. I put in your stacked wash/dry and the 4'4" double drain board sink next to it. I would probably add a fold up/down shelf next to the wash dry for folding (on the outside of the shower wall). I only had the measurements you gave and no idea which wall is which or how wide the doors and closet outside etc were so this is just a rough draft......See Morelookintomyeyes83

8 years agoI think you're right about shallow cabinets above the w/d. Do you think 18" is too short for a bench? The only time I think we'd really use it is putting on/taking off shoes. And honestly I wonder if we'll really do that, or if it'll simply turn into a dumping ground for junk. Maybe I should axe the bench....
Do you think 40" is tall enough for broom closet? I should go measure a broom and vacuum!

Picture standing in pantry, looking (thru the walls) at laundry room exterior door. Can see kitchen exterior door and pocket door.
Didnt quite follow one of your points. Were you suggesting NOT to do built-ins cabinets?
