Question about my Intelliflo set up?

O.K. Pool is done and equipment is running.

Pool and spa are 15k gal. total.

I have the Intelliflo 3.2v with the Intellitouch i5.

The pump is programmed to come on for 2 hrs. for the

Pentair pool shark suction cleaner @ 120gpm. Then the pump ramps down to 35gpm for 6 hrs. After that, it bumps back up to 120 gpm for 2 hrs. for shark again.The spa has 3" suction and the pool has 2.5" suction.

I also have 2 skimmers and the pool water also enters the spa and spills into the pool while filtering.

Any thoughts, recommendations, suggestions or info. on

this set up would be appreciated.

Holy cow! 120gpm

There is no way you could be programmed for efficiency as your are filtering 28,800 gallons on the sweep mode alone on a 15k pool. The idea behind the pump and its efficiency as compared to a single speed pump is setting the pool to turnover once daily. In your case. 15k.

If the system is actually running the program as you say, it is not programmed for this efficiency. Do you have a dedicated line for the cleaner or an ability to valve one skimmer? If so, you need to install an actuator on the cleaner line and program appropriately to get the benefit of your pump purchase.

More info on that if you can provide the info on the cleaner line.

Part of the problem is you have to lie to the program on the gallonage of your pool to keep it from running to long. Who really needs to turn over your whole pool during the winter? If you are heating it and have a heavy bather load. Pentair ought to have a winter program for pools that aren't being used.

FYI, The My Page email links aren't working very well. You should keep checking back here. You might post that you have free koi in the Atlanta area on other pond message boards. Koi Shack, JB's and American Ponders are three that I know of. Your pond and patio and pool are gorgeous! Koi do breed like rabbits. With 1400 gallons, I would not have over 3 or 4 Koi. They grow like crazy too.

You'll have quite a selection to pick this year. First thing you'll need to do is separate the determinates from indt. varieties. that way you can plan a taller trelis for the INDT varieties and shorter for the DETs. I'd avoid interplanting them as much as possible. Most Det. varieties will send out a network of branches faster than you will be able to weave them into the panel openings. You may end up just weaving string around the plants at different heights to hold them partially against the panels. The soaker hose will need to go under the plastic. If left above at any spot the water will just run to the lowest point- which is often the edge of the plastic. I would first lay out your soaker hose lines over your prepared bed in straight rows. Then lay the plastic over the hoses, exposing only the source ends (for waterline hookup). To minimize exposed area use a utility knife to cut a 6-8" slit parallel with the soaker hose where each plant will be planted. Then with a scissors cut a 3-4" perpendicular to each slit in both directions being careful to miss your soaker hose when cutting toward it. Now you can fold the flaps out, plant your tomatoes (again careful against the soaker hose) and then fold the flaps closed again against each plant. I don't think you need to be so careful with soaker hose but I use driptape and on occasion I'll need to splice a section that I nick with the utility knife or digging trowell. This method doesn't work if you need to trench plant. For that I usually plan to have the plastic mulch seam overlap slightly at the row and then laying rocks between each plant is necessary to hold the plastic down. I lay old boards between the rows to hold the plastic in place, provide a solid fotting and to keep from packing soil excessively throughout the season. Quackgrass is hardy and it will seek light at the slightest crack so be prepared. Some might suggest a newspaper "collar around each plant tucked under the plastic. Using a vegetative mulch around each plant might help but you'll need a thicker layer to prevent grass from growing through it. That brings up another point. Be sure the black plastic mulch is thick enough (2 mil.+) to keep quackgrass from sending tillers right through it.

So, 3 2" returns and one stubbed off according to your post... If you have only 2 returns of course you will have a higher load on the pump at any gpm. You're a couple of hundered watts and a few hundred rpm higher than most jobs I see but with 2 returns, I'd expect that. Closing suction lines is not going to make any difference. If you're at 35k and running 24 hours, ???, and it's reading 24 gpm, it's dead on. What are you looking to confirm? The gpm is right, the watts and rpm are the result of your system. Small filter?, dirty filter? I'm looking at your original post. The question is... "I notice when i turn all of the return valves off except for the 3 jets the pressure builds considerably and the pump wants to ramp up in rpm.....if i open the deep return it drops right away as its relieving pressure but my flow from the return jets dies. So my questionis what shoudl my filter pressure be if im using my return jets by themselves? Should I try to increase/decrease rpm untill opt pressure? I noticed with 2 skimmer valves opened fully it didnt matter if i opened main drain and/or suction cleaner valve." If you set a flow of 55gpm on your pump, it will try to maintain that in any mode you set. That is not necessarily the most efficient. If you want efficient spa jets, go to manual, set a base of 50gpm. Look at the rpm and pressure on the tank. Continue to increase flow u ntil rpm just hits 3400 or the psi is at or about 20-22. That would be an optimum MAX flow. Any more gpm than that (which the pump can do) is a waste. Optimum for filtration is just the opposite. Set it to 35 and go down while monitoring skimmer action, sweep needs, etc. That would be you desired low gpm. Multiply that by 60 and divide 35k by that. You now have you hours of run time. If you run a feature for a sweep or waterfall, calculate those gallons and subtract from 35k. The remainder is divided from that filter gpm and you now have a revised hours of operation. Jet return should not be an issue as your in pool mode. You don't need major flow there unless you're in spa mode.

If you want IntelliFlo and you have solar, your best bet is the 4x160 version. That version is not a stand alone controller. It's not a question of whether it has problems. It will function on a clock, but you can't change speeds automatically without a controller. The 3.2kw version is a stand alone unit. It is not always the best choice when you have solar. If you want automation, you can add the SunTouch or EasyTouch controllers. The 4x160 plugs directly into those and you can add the IntelliChlor SWG to the SunTouch or buy your EasyTouch with the SWG integrated. You can expect to pay about $2400 for an EasyTouch w/SWG installed plus another $1250 or so for the 4x160 pump and about $1900 to $2100 for a new 250k heater, all installed. If there are 3-way valves to be replaced, expect about another $75.00 per valve and if you are putting in a new filter, expect another $700-900 depending on what you choose, installed. That's way less than 10k so you better shop.

This is what the PB start up guy programmed it for now
until he gets a Pentair rep. out to help him program it right. He told me he does more 4x160's and this is the first 3.2v that he has dealt with.
I do have a dedicated line for the cleaner with a manual valve between pool suction, skimmers and cleaner line.

Repair guy- Can you give me some info. on how to set this up the right way until the rep. comes out and takes a look at it? I have the Mobie as my control so I know I can program everything from this. Do I need to replace the manual valve to a automated valve? Or can I adjust the manual valve for more suction to the cleaner and run it at a lower gpm? What would be your recommendation?
Any help would be appreciated.

The highest energy use will be if you run the dedicated line partially open with the skimmers. Reason being, you need to ramp up flow to get the suction needed for the cleaner. Depending on the cleaner, this could be anywhere from 30 to 50 gpm. As an example, you typically need about 48 on a Hayward Navigator with this set up. Install an actuator on the dedicated line and you suddenly need about 20-25. This is a significant savings that more than pays for the actuator.

You would really have to know the system to set it up. It is a bit tough to put in writing but the best way to start is you need to know whats on the i5 now. How many circuits in use?

To properly program, you also need to have the filter cleaned first. There are some initial setting to make before programming and a few software issues to need to work around if you are using any of the on board features. If you're not familiar with the button sequences on the pump, I can walk you though that but it will not be fun unless you address these initial questions.

Repair guy - Thanks for the reply. I changed the pump to
filter for 7 hrs at 35gpm for now. I don't know how important it really is to have the cleaner running eveyday for a couple of hours. I don't get a whole lot of dirt at the bottom of the pool.

So until I get an actuator, I think I will just close the valve for the cleaner for a few days and then turn it back
for just the cleaner for a few hours.

I'm all new with this stuff so I'm not sure what I'm looking for with how many circuits are in use.
I know that I have the intelliflo , 1 whisperflo 1hp for cascades, two actuators for pool and spa, mastertemp 4k heater and intellichlor. The lites are standard for pool and spa.

The Pentair rep. is schedualed to come out to help out next week, so until then, I think I will run it this way and price the actuator and install.
