set timing on brother sewing machine wont pull bobbin thread up

havent sewn for over a year last thing i made was a quilt and my machine was working properly when i stored it away.

i've tried to pull the bobbin thread up. i've adjusted, oiled, cleaned, threaded, rethreaded, everything i know to do EXCEPT check and set the timing. as i watch the needle it doesnt appears i need to adjust the timing.

how do i do this?

i've tried to find articles on line but they really are no help at all.

Hi Leaflove, it sounds like you know a lot about sewing machines, so you may just disregard what I suggest here, as chances are you have already done this. Have you made sure you are using the correct needle and that the needle is inserted correctly? On most machines these days the flat side of the needle goes to the back. Make sure you have pushed the needle all the up into the needle clamp, there is usually a little opening in the needle clamp where you can observe the top of the needle by moving the needle up and down. Maybe your needle is bent causing the hook to miss the thread.

I am also having problems with a Brother 2125 machine. It quit picking up the bobbin thread and I cant figure it out.
Is it possible that something in the inside mechanism inside got bent? It looks fine, but that's all I can figure could have happened.
If so, is it something thats replacable?

Hi Colleen, Thanks for your advice! I've oiled the machine in all the holes, but when i turned it over, I couldn't see any holes for me to oil? I've had a look and usually the first stitch works, and then afterwards, it all just goes crazy. the thread snaps, sometimes the thread under the material gets all bunched up. Sometimes it even decides to do a few stitches! But the bottom of the material never looks right. I've tried moving the dog pedal (? is that what it's called? the little razor things) but I can't decide which is 'up'. I'm wondering if that's just adding to my problems. Either way, the thread keeps on snapping regardless of what I do, whether there are stitches or not. I tried playing around with the tension but it doesn't really seem to do much? When I turned it over, I had a look at what was going on, and it seemed the thread would just get tangled in the bobbin, which then caused it to snap. But I'm at a loss as to *why* it's snapping. RE the vintage singer forum, if it helps, I'm in Australia. There's a label on the engine that says it's made in Victoria, by "Warren Playton" but I've tried googling that name too, and it's come up with nothing. Thanks for your advice! I'll give the tension thing another go after lunch.

I'm not familiar with your machine,but i have had other singers in the past. Does your bobbin area have a bobbincase that comes out,and did you take it out??.If so you may have not gotten it seated back in correctly.Check that out.Then make sure you have your needle in correctly.Does the needle thread from the side,or front to back?? Also make sure the bobbin is in correctly,the machine i have now ,the bobbin can only be put in one way or else it won't work.Fortunately my bobbins have a "H" on them so i know that is the top. Wish i was there to help you figure it out,as i'm sure it's something simple and may just be being overlooked.Do you have the manual?? Try the above things and see if any one of them helps.Please let me know how you do. Kathi

I agree with the others,let her pick out her own.I know this because dh bought me a new machine almost 10 years ago and i still havn't learned how to use all the bells and whistles.I was working full time when he got it,and i knew nothing about computor,and still don't know much.LOL Anyway,i couldn't take the lessons at first because of conflicting work schedules.Then when i retired i did go take the lessons,but they made no sense to me as i still didn't know the computor,and the teacher moved along tooooooooo fast for a beginner.We went back a couple of times,and dh even went along,figuring he could learn and then teach me,well you guessed it,he couldn't follow the teacher either,so i still havn't learned all the stuff about it. I am not familiar with Touch and Sew machines but I have used a large variety of other machines including older Singers and the most common reason for freezing up is that there is a small piece of thread caught in the works. Does the bobbin go in a bobbin case or is it a drop in? Do you have the manual for the machine? Can you remove the bobbin? If you can look closely for threads and lint and remove with a tweezers. If your manual tells you how to remove the bobbin race that would be the next step. This is often necessary for Singer Featherweights. You can likely find youtube videos to help you. Always, always, always double check your needle and be sure it's installed correctly before looking any further when a machine suddenly won't pick up the bobbin thread. Make sure that it hasn't slipped down a bit or gotten twisted in the needle clamp. If you changed the needle before this sewing session, re-check and make sure that the thread groove in the needle is postioned directly below the last thread guide. Even better, consult your manual and make sure you've got the right size needle and that it's installed properly. About 90% of "timing" problems are solved by re-installing the needle.

I thought I'd mention that on my Brother, there are times that if I don't put the bobbin case back JUST right, then it will not pick up the bobbin thread.

It's because of the timing of the needle and hook. Open the front, take off the ring, take out the hook and push the thing round or back a couple of mm's. See diagrams on sewusa.com
