van der sloot confesses and his defense lawyer say

His defense attorney Jose Luis Jimenez, says his client was in a fragile mental state from years of being labeled a killer in the international press. Jimenez hopes to reduce the charges from first-degree homicide to manslaughter.

I don't understand the "sincere confession" in Peruvian law that would give him a lighter sentence than a guilty plea. Given the choice, who would ever plead guilty? I find it difficult to believe this guy could be sincere about anything.

Natalee Holloway's mother must be feeling some sort of half-closure from this, but if only she knew what happened to her daughter . . .

Ann, please don't think I'm attacking, I'm not. But there has been a lot written about Judith Regan and little of it flattering (and that includes her flammable relationships with men, her own husbands and husbands other than her own). Many people in the publishing world see her differently than she sees herself...I've seen her quoted as having said 'it's trash the American public wants, so I'll publish trash" long before this book was even an idea. And as for me hoping book sales would flat line, I heard on the news today that pre-release purchases have brought it into the top three best sellers at Amazon.

Anderson Cooper had a show today on women who become emotionally involved with prisoners- men who have committed heinous crimes. I rarely watch AC, but tuned in today because the topic intrigues me. There was a radiologist on there who believed herself to be Vandersloot's "angel". She went to Peru to visit him 3 times, paid approx. $100,000 to his lawyers, and paid for investigators to work on his behalf. The show was taped before his confession this week, and she has since sent a letter to his lawyer requesting they return $75,000. But on the show, she steadfastedly defended him as "wounded". Amazing.

A guest on FoxNews just said that the jails in Peru are THE WORST on the planet. The "dorms" are about 25x15' and hold 35 inmates. There are no toilets--just a hole in the floor. They get showers once a week, and the food is barely edible. Poor baby. He should have been man enough to confess to killing Natalee--that would have been a walk in the park compared to what he is facing. I love the irony--he got off in Aruba because his father was connected; he had no chance of getting off in Peru because HER father is connected. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. As for boycotting Aruba: When I was there in the 1980's, it was the nicest place I had ever been, with the nicest people. I don't support the idea of hurting all the residents because of a few corrupt bureaucrats. Hopefully, the Arubans will be smart enough to vote out the corrupt politicians. JMHO

OK. I understand. You were speaking from purely a judicial aspect. Got it. I do think there was a cover-up in the Aruba incident. Wealthy kids often get a pass when they break the law or there is a bribe or a favor to officials. There are "Facebook style" photos of Van der sloot and his "posse" drinking, partying and flashing gang signs on the internet. He was not a "good kid" from a nice family. I'm willing to bet there have been more murders. Serial killers often confess to more unsolved murders after they are caught although this kid seems so pompous I don't think he will confess but there may be evidence from other crimes of missing persons or murders that will point to him as the prime suspect. This would all be moot if he gets sentenced to life in prion in Peru. I find comfort in believing that the hell he is going through now pales in comparison to the hell he will have when he leaves this earth.

He should never see the light of day, IMO.

Fragile state from years of being LABELED a killer. How about fragile state from BEING a killer. I mean, if you're going to come up with a stupid defense, tell it like it really is.

He's killed two women that we know of. I don't care that he's fragile. He should rot in jail, and after that rot in hell. Ban me from GW if you want, I have a strong opinion about this.

Sentencing set for Friday.

They are saying it will be probably be less than 30 years due to overcrowding of their jails.
