That is a relief to hear. A confession to the murder will make it easier to convict him even if he is not admitting the murder was part of an attempted sexual assault. It just sickened me to hear how his lawyer came to his defense suggesting Van Der Sloot left her alive in the hotel and it was obvious she fell and hit her head and this poor guy just has had a bad string of luck where girls just go and die after being with him. Geesh.
Since his name and photo is all over international news I wonder if anyone will recognize him as being the last one seen with any missing girls in Thailand? Or any of the other South American or European countries he has been known to live in. The fact that his victim in Peru was killed on the exact same day as his victim in Aruba makes me think he is a serial killer with a "signature" most likely choosing victims who he assumed had no family to come looking for them as is oft the case with serial killers. He miscalculated twice in choosing victims from wealthy families who cared about their daughters and had the means to pursue justice.
I hope everyone boycotts vacations to Aruba where the corrupt system let his family pull strings to keep him out of jail.
A guest on FoxNews just said that the jails in Peru are THE WORST on the planet. The "dorms" are about 25x15' and hold 35 inmates. There are no toilets--just a hole in the floor. They get showers once a week, and the food is barely edible.
Poor baby. He should have been man enough to confess to killing Natalee--that would have been a walk in the park compared to what he is facing. I love the irony--he got off in Aruba because his father was connected; he had no chance of getting off in Peru because HER father is connected. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
As for boycotting Aruba: When I was there in the 1980's, it was the nicest place I had ever been, with the nicest people. I don't support the idea of hurting all the residents because of a few corrupt bureaucrats. Hopefully, the Arubans will be smart enough to vote out the corrupt politicians. JMHO
Arrrgh. Typical sociopath never taking responsibility for actions and shifting the blame to the victim for *causing* the murder.
Actual quote: "I did not want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life," he told investigators, according to Peru's La Republica newspaper. "She had no right. I confronted her," he continued. "She was frightened, we argued and she wanted to get away. I grabbed her by the neck and I hit her."
He'll probably recant everything he said just like last time.
He confessed after he had a chance to speak with a lawyer from what I read. Murder as a crime of passion and not premeditated, carries 15-30 years with time off for good behavior. Had he been charged with aggravated murder in the process of robbery or sexual assault he would face a life sentence for the murder. I think someone coached him with this story and the story may change just like all his other stories regarding Halloway.
They still may be able to get him on aggravated murder at the trial since her wallet was empty and as her father said "there was not even one peso left in it". There may be other evidence after the lab reports come back in two weeks.
According to this article a crime of passion murder only carries 6-20 years in Peru and that is all he is facing if they do not pile on other charges of robbery or sexual assault. Having a waiting warrant in the US will put him away longer if he does get out before he dies in prison, and I am sure if Peru is forced to release him after he has served his sentence they will turn him over on the US warrant. Being a foreigner in prison is not going to be easy for this blond young man.
