He probably knew what the sentence was going to be and was prepared for it, but he's a disgusting and repulsive poor excuse for a human being.

Thanks for keeping the suggestions rolling, folks! I really shouldn't have said "ivy". The thing I'm wanting to plant isn't really such a thing. It's a creeping ground thing but it's not ivy. I'll let you know when I can get by Bachman's and identify it (or ask the neighbor). We don't mind a bit of work like thinning and culling, we're just trying to avoid things that are finicky and require you to do certain things at specific times every year (like you need to mulch this week, then pull the mulch off, then put in this kind of fertilizer, then water it this much, but not more, etc. etc.) Sedums love it here, in general. That sounds like a great document, duluthinbloomz4. Do you have a URL or if not, the title of it? I could probably track it down. People sometimes park along the street, but almost never in front of our house and pretty much never in front of our mailbox (where this bed is surrounding). Also, we have strong curbs so other than the slightly overhanging creeper I mentioned, it won't be in the street. I expect the mailman will probably clip it every once in a while but that's okay, cause he's a nice guy. :) BTW, I was just up north a couple of weeks ago. Man, those lupine were beautiful!

Alright, I kept the stems moist, first and foremost. I wapped them in wet paper towels until I got home, then I put them right into water. I enjoyed the blooms for a few days while I waited. I hydrated a Jiffy*7 peat pellet and placed about a half inche of perlite in the bottom of a three-inch pot. I trimmed off the flowering top, recut the stem under water and stripped off the bottom set of leaves. I scored the end of the stem, dipped it in rooting powder, shaking off te excess. The cutting went into the peat pellet, and I sqeezed the peat pellet tight around the end of the cutting. Then the cutting and pellet went into the pot on top of the perlite, then I filled up arond the peat pellet with more perlite, to the top of the pellet. Karl mists his with a timer, I kept mine in heavy but dappled shade on a shallow plate. (The plate allowed me to water the cuttings from the bottom. As long as the perlite and peat don't dry out, the water gets absorbed up into the asembly.) I made sure and never let the cuttings dry out, or let them tip over hard. They lost all their old leaves, then began growing new ones. When the new roots start poking out the bottom of the pot, the whole peat pellet is ready to be transplanted into a bigger pot. The peat "pellet" (really more of a blob of peat by now,) keeps the brand new feeder roots from breaking off and killing the fragile new cutting during transplanting. You still want to be very careful. Voila! A healthy measure of grace really helped, too, ha ha! Oh yeah, I put them in gradually more sun as they grew their new leaves. I moved them behind some bigger bands that face east, and this way they got dappled sun, then about an hour or two of "straight" sun, then shade until the next day.

Rita, Thank you, I liked this one from the first time the picture was posted on the forum...by Tweetybird, I think, and it is a large bloom I am so oriented to finishing a task that I didn't want to stop until that top strip was finished...well stop I did, instead of moving the ladder as planned, I cleaned up my mess and quit for the day. I have no business taking falls like that, and I know, only too well, exactly how bad it can be. I am very lucky that I was an obsessed roller skater when I was a young teen, skating more than 20 hours a week. I built pretty good bones that way, and they still serve me well. Good thing too, since I have always moved too fast and had the resulting undignified, unplanned, "stops". And do love the way the shed is looking. I wound up using a very pale yellow for the trim. I hated the light green with it, and this is the effect I wanted. Maybe I'll get to post pics early next week. kay

Ded, LOL, nice hat. Why didn't you put it on and then take the pic? Coincidentally, a hat arrived here yesterday -- DS went to some fan web site and ordered himself a hat. I don't think it's the same one, though. ;) Sandy, I think you told me this months ago and I'd forgotten! Thanks! We are staying at the convenient SU Sheraton for drop off but will be looking outside the city for parents weekend, which last year was the first weekend in Nov. but since Halloween is that Fri. next year, I hope it's going to be a different weekend. Someone recommended the town of Schineattles which I KNOW I've spelled wrong...not sure exactly how far it is from the school, but sounds like it's a pretty area to visit. It's fun to hear from DS about his friends getting notifications from schools. Seems like there is at least one every day (and so far his friends are all getting good news!).

Well, later a Peruvian (lawyer) was discussing the sentence with one of the hosts of In Session, and she said he may serve only 9yrs. He can get 1 day off of his sentence for every two hours he works in the work program, plus for good behavior and time already served; then he can put in a request for parole. Somehow it came out to possibly only 9yrs.

I guess I am not up to date on this case. Why do you say that the Alabama courts will be waiting for him when he gets out? I would think that if they had a case they would have done something earlier before the Peru incident ever took place. Did I miss something?

Extortion!

And it was, they say, the money, he used to go gambling in Peru and killed the young lady.

Vicki, he was indicted on federal charges in Alabama Court for extortion and wire fraud. He tried to extort $250,000 from Beth Holloway in exchange for information regarding what happened to Natalie and where her body could be found. The FBI became involved. Because he's a Dutch national, they have worked through Interpol. They have put a "hold" on him for extradition to the US (filed through Alabama court) if and when he is released. He very well could be heading to Alabama one day to face those charges.

Anderson Cooper had a show today on women who become emotionally involved with prisoners- men who have committed heinous crimes. I rarely watch AC, but tuned in today because the topic intrigues me. There was a radiologist on there who believed herself to be Vandersloot's "angel". She went to Peru to visit him 3 times, paid approx. $100,000 to his lawyers, and paid for investigators to work on his behalf. The show was taped before his confession this week, and she has since sent a letter to his lawyer requesting they return $75,000. But on the show, she steadfastedly defended him as "wounded". Amazing.

They said that he will probably only serve 9 years. I hope he is treated appropriately while incarcerated.

Whats wrong with him taking a 28 yr plea...if they had gone through all the expense and bother of a trial the worst he could get is life...which is only 32yrs anyway...

I hope he rots in that jail and I hope that he comes to know just a small peace of the pain and hurt that he has caused Natalee's parents. And then I hope he never sees the light of day again.

Excellent point Lazypup.

I also think he is truly damaged. Another case of a highly intelligent psychopath. Unfortunately he will never receive real help nor rehabilitation. He will just be another guy who goes in and out of the revolving doors of the prison systems.

I don't understand why we ignore mental health issues. Lock-up doesn't work. Once out the crimes will be recommitted. But it's all about outrage and punishment. Not really about making a safer world to live in at all.
