For those who like to change their desktop photo often, here's a gorgeous collection of National Geographic Photos of the Day. The images are archived, so you can take your pick. If you click on Home, you can see Photos of the Month and other features.

Here's the image from that site I'm using currently.

Well, she's in the ground :)! Yesterday, during late afternoon shade, I dug deep and wide to give the best chance. The garden bed's top 6 inches is run-of-the mill garden soil and then heavy clay begins - solid clay at least 1.5 ft down. I didn't dig deeper but know it continues thanks to last summer's experience. I'm a little concerned that the clay floor and wall that runs around the hole will cause issues but, hopefully, I've amended the area adequately. In the bottom, I put about 8 inches of triple mix (peat, compost, manure), gently roughed the roots, set the bush on top of a pyramid pile, sprinkled some bonemeal around, filled in, firmed and watered. Watered a bit more this morning, too, just in case. Feel free to tell me where I goofed ;-). Now, I'm on the hunt for clematis (maybe Piilu)...and probably one more rose...The bug has bitten :). Karenforroses - I loved your pairing of veronica with your Macy's Pride. I picked up two to accompany mine - Royal Candles. Pretty sure sweet William will go in there as well. I have seedlings on the go but just heard they'll not bloom til next year. Ah, well. Off-topic: Others I picked up on the same trip- nemesia Berries n Cream, heliotrope, stock, dianthus Arctic Fire and coreopsis Moonbeam. The coreopsis will go near some salvia May Night at the side of the house...I haven't decided about the others - containers or beds, time will tell. The nemesia smalls out of this world!!! Yes, it was the Bantersville School (ca. 1880(?) - 1937) and people in the area still refer to it as such. Some years ago, I mostly lurked on GW and rarely posted. But I was registered as Schoolhouse back then,too. Not sure I'm the same poster that you remember.

I have had this picture as my desktop for at least the last year or more... It is a single-leaf picture of the hosta Rascal, as it pokes through the railing on my front porch. Sadly, Rascal is now on its "decline" for the summer... seems like it is always one of the first ones to start showing winter dormancy... Buff P.S. Sorry I haven't been posting much lately. Getting ready to deliver a baby in ~5.5 weeks, busy getting baby's room all set up, etc. Hope everyone has been having a great hosta summer! Buff's desktop... hosta Rascal

Ravencajun: the WoT sounds great. Alisande: you're right I did. A pumpkin in a storm. Lindsey: I have windows7, but I don't fine any thing that pretty on it. I never thought of having a border around a picture to put the icons on. That seems like it would make them plainer to see. I'll have to check into the other sites mentioned, but all that resizing is too ambitious for me. I like ready make slide shows. yes I'm lazy and still trying to get use to things on the computer. I'm chuckling because I assume you're kidding, Sunshines. Only someone named Sunshines would say that.

If you're not kidding, and you think beauty exists only in the sun, then it's a good thing you live in Florida. :-)

I use my own photos sometimes, but I'm aware that better photographers than I exist, with interesting views to share. I'm grateful for the opportunity to see what they see.

Thanks for the link Alisande. I really like the pic you showed. I know I am definitely in the minority, but I'm not a fan of the sun. Overcast days are my favorite. The sun hurts my eyes, and if I'm in it too long I get hives.

I also prefer winter over summer, anytime. Now, a mild winter is preferred, haha.

Today's (Jan. 2) photo of Tuscany is oddly beautiful - eerie, stark and beautifully composed. I find it mesmerizing. It would make a great jigsaw puzzle.

Katlan, I like the idea of sun, but when I'm outdoors a little goes a long way. The photo above was taken at daybreak in Myanmar.

Thanks, Maire--it's now on my desktop. I agree....mesmerizing. But you must be a much better jigsaw puzzler than I!
