Washer/Dryer Recommendation?

Hi all,

I'm new here, so glad that someone pointed me in your direction! My washer/dryer are 15+ years old and acting a bit wonky. I know that they will need replacing sometime soon. I've been doing a lot of research on FL washers/dryers and have read mixed reviews about the dryers not working well on loads of towels/jeans and having the leave the door open on the washer to prevent an odor in the machine.

I have a family of four (two young kids), and I do about 3-4 loads per week. The laundry room is next to the kitchen on the main level of our home, so I do most of the laundry during the day. The reason I'm attracted to FL machines is so that I can put a counter over the top (mounted to the wall, not resting on the machine) for folding purposes, etc.

My hope would be that I wouldn't need to replace these machines for another 15 years!

I'm not really sure if any machine made today will last as long as the old ones did, but I am hopeful. I purchased my Bosch Nexxt series FL washer and dryer over 6 years ago, and have been very happy with them.

FL's are very different, require much less soap, and a bit of care. My machine does smell a bit musty if I close it and don't do a load for a week. Otherwise, I just leave it open to air out overnight and it does fine. I've also discovered the type of detergent I use (often too much) makes it smell even more. These machines use much less water, therefore if you use too much soap, it doesn't get rinsed out, possibly causing some of the smell. I never notice a smell when I use Persil soap, or when I use just a tablespoon of liquid soap. My soap does seem to last forever!

As for dryers, mine has never had a problem with drying things completely. There is a sensor behind the lint collector that senses when things are dry. If you use dryer sheets, the product in the sheet clogs the lint screens squares, blocking the sensor and the dryer can stop working well. I was told by my appliance guy to never use dryer sheets in these newer type of machines for that reason. I have only used liquid softener in my washer and I never worry about static, and my dryer has never not worked exceptionally well, even with larger loads. One thing though, the Bosch dryers get super hot, so I changed my flexible duct for a solid one, mainly to decrease the risk of fire with it being so hot. I also clean out beneath my dryer's lint collector with a long skinny brush to remove any lint that may not come out with the screen, and also vacuum that area once a year.

I think it's a small amount of maintenance that has kept my machines doing well. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to ask the Bosch technician a ton of questions when the washer's seal came off my machine 2 weeks after I got it. I learned some valuable information and have had no problems with my machines since following his advice. I'm very happy with my set, and I do hope they last another 10 years or more.

Moisture sensors typically are not behind the lint screen, but rather are in the drum, directly exposed to contact with the tumbling load. Wet/damp items touch the sensor bars to complete a very low-voltage electric circuit between them. The control board reads the "hits" to determine moisture content.

I agree you don't need a dryer until it's done and even then sometimes a simple repair can get you going again. As for the washer, a leak can be a simple thing or a complex thing. A noise can be simple or serious. Sounds like you just want a new machine. If you're happy with the performance of the machine and I don't even know what you have - but it might be worth seeing about repair. Certainly the potential to be much cheaper than buying new. Contrary to what many will tell you, you seldom will pay for a new unit with detergent and water savings on HE models. Since you mentioned price over bells and whistles, I really think you're best off to set your price. Then go look to see what's in that price range. Do the bells and whistles meet your needs? Then come back and ask about Brand X vs. Brand Y models. Research repair service available in your area. For instance, LG has had a lot of people find a lack of repair service in their area. This could be an important consideration. We all want our machines to go 50 years trouble-free but the odds of that happening, yes even on the oft-worshiped Miele, doesn't happen often. You'll get people shouting BUY BINFORD 6100 - I LOOOOOOOOVE MINE!!! and you could come to find it's out of your price range... that's not much help then is it? One thing I try to remind people: Cheap does not always mean bad. Expensive does not always mean good. Value is the key IMO. Check clearance aisles, scratch and dent areas too. You can pick up some bargains. Capacity doesn't sound like a big issue, but is cycle time important? Front loaders will generally take quite a bit longer than traditional toploads. You might need to reschedule your laundry activities. Are you able/willing to do this? Any problems bending over, crouching down to load and unload a frontloader? There are some low priced front loaders out there and many find them to be adequate. Some of the laundry snobs scream that you'll smell forever and the world will implode if you don't get a heater. And sometimes the heaters don't even get used! So just be careful. Look for what fits your needs and your budget. There's a dizzying array of choices out there both in front load and even HE top loaders available now in case you're interested in them. Happy hunting!

Mrs Tad Hacker, I wouldn't even know where to start to find one in Canada and can only imagine that it would be $$$. I don't mind the long cycles on the LG and routinely double rinse every load. I'm a front load lover and enjoy being able to customize my settings for each load. As seen in my picture, there are multiple types of detergent and additives that are used routinely. None of that is part of a detergent hoard. Now if the Speed Queen could automatically move the clothes from the washer to the dryer, I'd be on board! LOL

I have to replace a 14 yo Bosch Nexxt 800 washing machine that I loved for as long as parts were availablel to keep it going. NOW I have to rip out a lot of my laundry room bc the Bosch washer is less than 38" tall (close to 37") and I stupidly thought that height would be standard when I had our Caesarstone counters installed over both front loading washer and dryer. Live and learn. Anyway, I was all set to replace with $peedqueen, but when I went to their website to check out the options, I read a bunch of 1 and 2 star reviews that have pretty much decided against them. Such a bummer. I guess all washers will have their issues, but I can't spend over $2K unless the reliability (and repairability if something goes wrong) isn't super solid. PS - If anyone knows of a decent washer/dryer that are under 37.5" tall I'd buy them instantly to avoid ripping out my countertop!
