Yes, Kathleen, you should be very proud of me. I was looking for some pasta plates and I wanted a certain shape and size. Finally, at Marshall's, I found some. They were made in England, not in China, so that was a plus for me. The pattern wasn't egregious, and so I bought four of them for $2.99 each. After I brought them home, I checked Amazon to see if I could pick up coffee cups and that's when I found out about Spode china, LOL. The pattern is Floral Haven and these are the pasta bowls:

When I found that Amazon wants $20 each for the dinner plates, I high-tailed it back to Marshall's for the plates. Sure enough, they were gone, but I found a large platter and four salad plates:

I really like the salad plates, I wish the rest of the set looked like that! Anyway, I have four salad plates, four individual bowls and one serving bowl. I'll be watching now for the dinner plates and maybe some cups.

If I don't find them, oh well. (shrug) I have soup and salad lunch sets, and that's fine.

I just knew you'd be proud of me, though, buying dishes that didn't match anything else and that I don't really need or have room for, LOL.

Hi everyone, Well, I am double posting this in 2 forums - I hope nobody minds. As promised, here I am posting about what in the world I've been doing all summer while traveling to & fro Wisconsin. As some of you already know, I work with fish-eating birds: cormorants, pelicans, herons, egrets, gulls, wood storks, etc. My husband and I have been working in Wisconsin for the past 3 years, but we also regularly work in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Ontario, and a few other places. Yes, we are a husband + wife team, working together out of the same office. Many people are surprised that we work together, but it is great. We make a fantastic team, and are often at our best under challenging field conditions. Great minds think alike, and being dear friends & in love sure helps too. (ok, enough with the mushy stuff). So now for a few photos from the vegetation surveys we did this month. Background: We are working on remote islands in Lake Michigan, around the Door Co. Peninsula area. All the islands have nesting double-crested cormorants and herring gulls. Some also have nesting Am. white pelicans and Canada geese. Back in April, we put up some 6 ft x 6 ft pens (we call them exclosures) to exclude the cormorants because they damage vegetation with their nesting activities (too much POOP!). So then we went back in August to catalog everything that grew in the pens, by plant species, and weighed it to also determine biomass. That meant breaking out the field guides, studying up on botany and the flora of Wisconsin, and bringing the plant presses for species we couldn't identify on the island. We compareed the exclosure plots to some "control" plots, which had nothing but 4 wooden stakes at the corners. We had 45 plots to do on 3 islands, plus another 3 islands down by the city of Green Bay that we did simple vegetation surveys on (no pens). It was alot of work, but very interesting. The bottom line: there are lots of nonnative species on those islands, like motherwort, catnip, pigweed, common mallow, stinging nettle and sow thistle. The native vegetation was primarily lambsquarter and smartweed species. Almost done clipping this 1-meter plot: Looking for small plants beneath the lambsquarter The finished, sampled 1-meter subplot Who would even know what this was?!?! I saved seeds to winter sow and see if I can't figure it out. The very last veg plot to measure. You can tell, because we look so happy! A friend found crawling across the plant press The stinging nettle I hacked through to make us a nice trail to get to the center of the island. At least its not poison ivy! Ok, that's all for now. I assume that this problem was resolved since this is an old posting. However for those like myself who also had the same trouble and hated Bosch; I found a solution. The spray arms are poorly designed and the tiny holes clog over time. Unscrew the "nut" attaching each of the spray arms and use an ice pick or something small to unclog the holes along the arms. You will have to tilt the arm back and forth and shake out all the particles through the center connection hole in order to clean it out. Run water through it to be sure it is clear and shake it until there is no sound and the holes are clear. Re-attach to the machine and you will have sparkling dishes again. I cursed the darned dishwasher for weeks until I learned this!

Prosperity, the empty spaces are going to be used for my silk flowers. I have a black thumb when it comes to gardening, so I pretty much use silk flowers in all my tablesettings. The flowers are still packed up...that's my project for this coming weekend. I'm planning to get them all out and put in the organizer. Bright, I got a chuckle out of renting out my husband! That's a great idea though...I could sure use some more money cause I've got my eye on a couple of sets of new china. LOL! Seriously, ya'll just don't know how shocked I am that he actually did this for me without me having to bug him for literally years. He does remodeling, roofing, siding, new construction for a living and he just doesn't want to do anything like that when he's at home. It's always such a huge nag, nag, nag to get anything done around here. So this was a wonderful gift for me!

Again, sorry for the delay in responding to your comments on my new dish pantry...busy few days with DD's visit. Thank you all so much for your compliments! I am really happy with the space. It was amazing when I set my last tablescape, how much faster it was. I could try things out all in one spot and get a visual before taking them down to my table. I do have my linens in another closet and my candle holders in a dresser in DD's old room and it would be wonderful to have EVERYTHING all in one place but then I wouldn't get ANY exercise! LOL! I have been leaving the doors of my new dish pantry open but it is not so much to see my dishes but rather because the stain DH used on the shelves was quite "smelly" though it is fading now. You are all correct....my DH is wonderful and I really appreciate his efforts to make me happy! OA, thank you for your comments and I am glad now you "forced" me to get some pics posted of my pantry. If I wait until things are "perfect" the post may never happen! How did your meeting with the cabinet maker go? I think no space is "too small" when it comes to using it for more dish storage! I'm sure whatever you do with yours will be more useful than housing stuff other than dishes! DD

Nope, no "on-line" shopping spree, please, I'm afraid they'd all break in shipping and the shipping would cost more than the plates did at Marshall's, LOL.

Annie, Those are lovely and will be easy to find companion plates to go with them. I may just check out our Marshall's just to see...

I started buying my Portmiron at Marshall's. The price is sooooo much better that shopping for it in department stores or on-line. Nothing like a bargain.

They're beautiful Annie! Have you seen Kathleen's new dishes on her blog - I ran out to TJMaxx immediately to try to get them but they didn't have them. Kathleen is a very bad influence here.

I have total pasta bowl envy! I actually like the white ones best. Being a naturalist/gardener I think those bowls are the cat's meow! I have been wanting to get some pasta bowls since I eat sooooooo much pasta. But I haven't found anything that goes with the rest of my stuff and that I can afford. Good score!

Wow, I can't believe I haven't sucked Kathleen in with this thread yet, LOL.

Lpink, I do kind of like the "plant" motif, but I still like the small green salad plates the best, they're so nice and....well.....green. My favorite color, the color of hay fields and forests, gardens and pastures, I just like green.

C'mon, Kathleen, don't let me down.

Coconut, who has many more dishes than I need or have room for. I used to "rescue" them from flea markets plus I used to sell kitchen stuff at flea markets. I think that was just an excuse to indulge my kitchen fetish which extends nicely to dishes. Heh..

Aren't you proud how many people you now have heading to Marshalls. I'll bet Kathleen will be proud too. LOL.

Those are beautiful!! And what a bargain too! Don't you love when you make a score like that?! It doesn't happen to me very often so I love it when I finally get a deal on something.

I LOVE dishes - if I had the room to store them I'd probably have a dozen different patterns. I'm actually looking for a new everyday set but I can't make a decision because I love so many different patterns!

I don't care for my "good" dishes at all - I got them when I first got married and my tastes have changed dramatically. But I have service for 15 with all the extras - bowls, platters, butter dish, sugar & creamer, gravy boat, etc. It's not horrid, but it's nothing that I'd pick today if I had the choice.

I wish I could sell it and get another set but I think I'm stuck with it for now!

I love dishes and love Marshalls.

lisazone6_ma, I'd love to get rid of my wedding dishes too and get something I like. My taste was different 30 years ago--alot different.

Hey, I am slow, what can I say!

I LOVE your new dishes..I think there is a drool plate to go with them, Miss Maggie, SA..:)

I will keep my eyes open for the dinner plates..They go with so many things!

Thanks for showing them, Annie..you know I love to see dishes...
And now that Marigene has seen them, she might find the dinners too...she is great at dish spotting!

LOL, Kathleen, DO NOT look for the dinner plates. If I run across them for cheaply enough, I'll pick them up, otherwise, I'm good to go. I really only wanted the pasta plates/bowls, then Elery decided I needed the serving dish and I just liked the little salad plates.

I definitely do not NEED them (grin) and good sense will prevail. Sure it will.....

I just knew you'd be proud of me, though!

And, I want Kathleen's new red dishes, LOL. I went to Marshall's today and they're not there and they're not in my TJM either - but I have another bigger and better Homegoods to hit tomorroow! I remember those dishes from Jain's blog where she used them under her Christmas plates - so I went and found the Christmas plates and found 4 and so I need 4 of those red plates, umm I mean I want them not need them.

Yeah, but Woodie, you NEED those red plates, because they have to go under the Christmas plates you already have. Yeah, that's it.....

OK, I'll check my Marshall's this weekend for "your" red dishes.

OK, I checked out kathleen's blog and she has beautiful dishes, LOL, but I only find red dishes that she said she got from Pottery Barn.

On Kathleen's post of April 30th - red and white dishes with a tassle design. And I'll go one step further and write to Jain to get her picture of them with the Christmas dishes, may take me a while :)

Well, with thanks to Jain, here is a link to her blog with her post of 12/25/08 showing the dishes that I fell in lust with! I did have it mixed up a bit - she used them over and not under her Christmas plates - I guess I fell in lust with both sets of dishes.

Woodie, I can't be a dishaholic, I don't have the room, LOL. Remember, I live in a little house with smaller kitchen cabinets. Plus, I refuse to buy anything that says "Made In China" on the back, that should save me a lot of the time!

I'll watch for those red dishes for you, though. You need the dinner plate size or everything from salad plates to soup bowls?

Annie, I don't buy made in China either - thanks but please don't look for the dishes for me. I only need 4 and I don't know what I need yet - but definitely not a whole bunch - just a couple of plates - I want them to mix and match with my Christmas dishes and they're packed away so I have no freaken idea what I need, LOL. I just like to live vicariously through Kathleen and Jain's beautiful tables and blogs. Hmmmmmm, do you think I need them in purple too????? (Don't answer that.)
