My new dish storage

When DH asked what I wanted for Valentine's Day, I told him I wanted my pantry remodeled. It had three small shelves in it and was full of junk. I told him I'd like to have it painted and shelves top to bottom. I also wanted the bi-fold doors that were on it trashed. I hated those things with a passion!

About three weeks ago, we went shopping and bought two new doors for it and he finally got some time this past week to work on it. I wish I had some before photos to show, but they're on my daughter's camera. Of course, she can't find the cable for the camera so I could load them on my computer.

This is my new pantry full of dishes and tablesetting goodies. I've spent all weekend working on getting stuff put up and I'm tickled pink with it! I finally have all my dishes in one place instead of stored in three different rooms. I put shoe organizers on the back of both doors to store items that I use on the table. The hat boxes hold chargers. The plastic storage containers hold mainly Christmas tablesetting items.

DH says I can't buy any more dishes now cause the pantry is full. Silly man...I can stack the dishes a little higher and make room for more!

Woowee...lucky you!! Great job. You said you were going to get DH to do it and you did. I love how everything is so organized and easy to see. I makes life so much easier, and it looks great too. In my old house, I used to have a Butler's Pantry that had that kind of storage (up the kazoo) and I miss it terribly. Seeing your pantry..gives me 'pangs of envy'...lol I'm so happy for you. Oh and by the way tell DH...I see pleanty of room in there, for Much More!!

I assume that this problem was resolved since this is an old posting. However for those like myself who also had the same trouble and hated Bosch; I found a solution. The spray arms are poorly designed and the tiny holes clog over time. Unscrew the "nut" attaching each of the spray arms and use an ice pick or something small to unclog the holes along the arms. You will have to tilt the arm back and forth and shake out all the particles through the center connection hole in order to clean it out. Run water through it to be sure it is clear and shake it until there is no sound and the holes are clear. Re-attach to the machine and you will have sparkling dishes again. I cursed the darned dishwasher for weeks until I learned this!

Wow...OA beat me to it! I was just thinking the same thing about your 'Adventures' in Dish & Cabinet Hunting...lol EURIKA!! on the Cabinet. What a great buy for $12. You couldn't buy the wood for that money, and it's good looking too. So happy you scored on that one. It's hard when you're about to buy something and then it's 'snapped up' buy someone else. I used to go to Huge Estate Sales in NY, and if I'd be looking at something, Dealers would come along and slap a 'Sold' price on it... and then move on to other things. I realized they did this to hold the piece until they were done, then decide what they Really wanted. I complained once to them and to the buyer how unfair it was to allow this.. Well anyway, I love all your storage spaces, and you're right to get them out of tubs. It's sooo much better and way more fun when you want to set something up, rather than having to hunt and dig them out...and try to remember where they're stored! You got another set of very pretty dishes...I like the delicate pattern...and you were so lucky to find them on Ebay..(great place). You've got me 'eyeing' a large cabinet that I have in the Garage too...I keep wrapping paper and craft stuff in there, which could easily be put in my walk in attic. I think, I will take a second look at it and do some 'Rearranging of sorts'...lol You guys are too much and sooo inspiring with ALL your wonderful Storage Places. I love seeing what everyone has done..great incentives to get the 'juices' going to figure different storage possibilities. I used to have a large old house, with lots of storage (butler's pantry)...Now, when we built this house, we downsized and I didn't think I'd be doing all this Extra dish collecting...and, I'm regretting it...But, as they say, Where There's A Will...There's A Way! jane

Well, now I'm not so sure. The Emile Henry web site states that (with a few exceptions) the product is "Guaranteed for 10 years against any defects". However, the cardboard insert attached to the bottom inside of the dish says "Guarantee 3 Years". The EH site also sells seconds, which have very minor flaws (e.g. a very small dimple on the surface), and those are "covered by Emile Henry's limited household three (3) year warranty against breakage due to workmanship". Well, mine has a small dimple and a couple of tiny marks inside that I thought were flecks of black pepper (they're not -- they don't scrape off). I washed the dish but haven't used it yet. Yesterday, I wrote to EH to ask why their site guarantees a dish for 10 years, but the label on mine says 3 years. I purchased the dish at Amazon.com, where the product description also says 10 years. I haven't received a reply from EH yet, so I'll wait about a day and will call them if I don't receive a reply by then. Their "second" dish like this costs $20 less on their site. True, I paid $4 of my own money using Amazon gift cards, but I spent the gift cards believing I was getting the product as described. Meanwhile I am giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I won't use the dish until I know it's THE ONE I intended to order, not a second.

You could stand them on their sides. You could use tray dividers, to hold them in place. I'd vote for spacing the dividers so that a single dish *just* fits in the space. That way they can stand more upright, and you won't be tempted to put other stuff in there to lean on. These are sort of big for uppers, but you could create something similar w/ wood. Or look into the shelf dividers usually shown in clothes closets; just space them much more closely. You'd have to investigate whether they'd slip if they had a lasagna pan leaning on them. Or, you could find free-standing dividers, like this set of wooden pegs on a stand, often used for holding plates on edge. There are several styles of white wire dividers as well, usually shown holding bakeware (cookie sheets, muffin pans). If one of those wire ones was too big (it had 4 slots, and you only have 3 pans), or the wrong shape (you wish one of the slots was wider), you could scrounge up a bolt cutter, and simply cut one off. (A dremel tool will let you eliminate any sharp edge that's left, if you think you need to). W/ the wooden one, you might be able to either simply remove a peg, or cut it off w/ a saw. If you wanted to store them horizontally w/o stacking them, you could use something like those three-level wire shelves that often are shown holding plates & bowls This one looks a bit spaced out for lasagna pans, since those aren't that thick. So to find one of these w/ smaller spaces, look for cheaper ones, LOL! You could put a wire undershelf basket under a shelf in an upper cabinet, and then it would create a not-too-high cubbyhole ABOVE the plates, or glasses, or whatever. There are one for place mats and for platters, if one of these turns out to be too high, or too short (the place-mat ones are often open on the ends) Or, you could add a shelf to a cabinet, creating a cubbyhole. Just get some plywood cut to fit, and some iron-on edgebanding to cover the front edge. You can also buy shelving covered w/ melamine and have it cut to size. And cabinet-refinishing places will sell shelves in almost any finish (real wood, birch-look melamine, etc.) Space it closely. Depending on how wide the cabinet is, and how much you plan to put on it, you might be able to use 1/2" thick wood instead of the traditional 3/4" And there are frying-pan racks that are something to consider. And of course, the classic organizing idea: Seriously think about whether you truly need all of the pans that you have. (you might--even just one of them is hard to store))

What a Valentine's present! Somebody loves you a whole lot. Aren't you just sooooo happy!
It will make" tablescape designing" so much easier.

And, to be honest, I WANT YOUR DISH PANTRY.

Dream, that is FABULOUS! To go from three small shelves to that much storage, WOW! Your DH must be pretty "supportive" of your tablescaping to do that for you, what a nice guy! And by doing such a terrific job building those STURDY shelves, of course you will be able to fit more dishes in there!

My DH has torn out the shelves in the closet in our DS's old room and your renovation is a good example of what I would like done in there. We are converting the room into my "office" and I feel any empty closet is fair game for dishware!

Well color me pea green with envy! I get flowers for Valentines Day; you get the most awesome pantry remodel! What a great present. Heck . . . what a great DH!

Oh my goodness! Dream, that turned out wonderful and is so perfect for all your dish treasures. I too am pea green with envy--but also thrilled for you!

Hanging those clear pockets on the doors is a great idea. Much easier for storing the beads, half marbles, napkin rings, etc. than digging through drawers for them. I have one in my craft room, but hadn't thought about using one for tablescape/vignette items.

Give your DH a HUGE hug and tell him we are so proud of him for doing this for you! Tell him he's also given us hours of pleasure from all the pretty tablescapes you can share now that it will be easier to do them.

Thanks everyone! I'm still so excited about it and since my children thought I was crazy for wanting all this storage for dishes, I couldn't wait to share it with ya'll! I knew ya'll would understand! I think he did a fabulous job and I didn't have to bug him for 10 years to get it done! LOL!!!

Luvs, I love the hanging organizers. I was amazed at the amount of stuff I could put in them. I still have some empty pockets, but those will be filled up with silk flowers. I'm so "gardening challenged" - I'm rotten with live flowers, so it's silk flowers for most of my tablescapes. This will be perfect for storing and organizing them. It'll probably be next weekend before I get them done though.

Be sure to give him a big kiss and tell him how we all will be asking our DHs for a pantry just like it. That should make him feel good. Thanks for the pic. Our DHs now have a guide!!
And of course there is still plenty of room in that pantry. You just have to use creative stacking. Mother's Day will be here before you know it and he can recreate another closet for you!!!

I had to come back by this post to drool over your neat dish pantry and all your pretty dishes one more time. Gosh, you sure have lots of nice pedestal plates, and so many sets of stemware too. It just all looks so beautiful the way you have it arranged. If I were you, I'd be leaving the doors open allot for the next few days just so I could admire it! ;o)

What a beautiful room! I wish I have a husband that could make me such a wonderful storage (I'm single, lol)! Congrats for your new room!

At first sight, I thought it was a new store... you really did a great job especially with those shoe organizers! Will for sure pick your idea as I NEED more storage for my own decorations!

BTW, yes, there's some space left for you to buy new things... why left those shoe organizers empty???

Wow!! And another wow!! The shelves are absolutely amazing - I am an organization freak. Look at all that space!!! And then you have all those lovely dishes - total eye candy. Dont you love those shoe organizers. I have them everywhere! I have to show this pic to my DH!

Prosperity, the empty spaces are going to be used for my silk flowers. I have a black thumb when it comes to gardening, so I pretty much use silk flowers in all my tablesettings. The flowers are still packed up...that's my project for this coming weekend. I'm planning to get them all out and put in the organizer.

Bright, I got a chuckle out of renting out my husband! That's a great idea though...I could sure use some more money cause I've got my eye on a couple of sets of new china. LOL!

Seriously, ya'll just don't know how shocked I am that he actually did this for me without me having to bug him for literally years. He does remodeling, roofing, siding, new construction for a living and he just doesn't want to do anything like that when he's at home. It's always such a huge nag, nag, nag to get anything done around here. So this was a wonderful gift for me!
