Got my new lasagna/roasting dish!

After searching and reading many reviews and considering my budget, I finally settled on my new lasagna/roasting dish, the Emile Henry 14.5 x 11 Lasagna Dish, large enough for a roast, chicken, or lasagna for a crowd. It arrived yesterday and it is beautiful (the photo doesn't do it justice). I used 2 Amazon.com gift cards, and my cost was only $4. :-)

Thank you! I also ordered the square dish (same color) which will ship from a different seller. And then, I want to order the pie dish. And then...... ??? :-)

Sujiwan, there are mentions of this all over the Hugelkultur sites. At least those that feel the need to instruct. :) From what I remember, cedar, treated lumber, walnut, locust and a couple more weren't good. Things that decompose very slowly or that have antibacterial properties such as the cedar. This was so easy. Somehow easier than the lasagna beds I made when I first moved in here, around 2002-4. Perhaps I'm braver and trust common sense that I didn't at first. ha! Either way, I'm having all the building materials moved out of my front yard, where they've been since 2005, stacked out behind the barn, and building another long bed in front. I imagine my yard as a future courtyard area, with my Japanese maples providing some shade, but definitely beautiful visual interest. Check out the resuse centers for lumber: Community Forklift in Edmonston (off Kenilworth Ave) or 2nd Chance in Baltimore. I got 12"w, 16' long unfinished pine for my kitchen floor at $0.25 a foot and 2nd chance. I'm going to check there for longer treated deck boards or just treated lumber. As a matter of fact, I think I've talked myself into going out there today. Got nuttin' better to do!

Oh fer crying out loud - nobody's talking about "need" here - only "want"! And, I want Kathleen's new red dishes, LOL. I went to Marshall's today and they're not there and they're not in my TJM either - but I have another bigger and better Homegoods to hit tomorroow! I remember those dishes from Jain's blog where she used them under her Christmas plates - so I went and found the Christmas plates and found 4 and so I need 4 of those red plates, umm I mean I want them not need them.

My favorite asparagus recipe: Mustard-Dressed Asparagus Cooking Light, April 1998 4 lbs asparagus (I used 1 bunch) 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 Tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoon mustard seeds Snap off tough ends of asparagus. Bring 4 qts water to a boil in an 8 qt stockpot. Add half of asparagus; cook 3 minutes. Remove asparagus from stockpot. Rinse with cold water; drain and pat dry. Repeat procedure with remaining asparagus. Combine the Dijon mustard, lemon juice, and salt in a small bowl. Place a large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add mustard seeds; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add asparagus and mustard mixture, and cook 2 minutes of until thoroughly heated. Yield: 8 servings

In general, I have found that the Buy-It-Now listings are fairly close to what they will sell for. I fill in all my vintage from Ebay. The prices are stupid high on Replacements. Buy-It-Now is all that I will shop. I do not like bidding. Read the listing carefully and look at all photos after you enlarge them. Also, I check the buyer rating. Don't forget to check the shipping cost. You can "watch" an item to see if the price drops. Yes, I also look at the sold listings, but you have to compare the same listing. A complete set in mint condition is worth more than one missing a piece or scratched. Be sure to only buy if they post a good picture of the back of the item. I have only been disappointed one time and that was for a $3 magazine.

Well, now I'm not so sure.

The Emile Henry web site states that (with a few exceptions) the product is "Guaranteed for 10 years against any defects". However, the cardboard insert attached to the bottom inside of the dish says "Guarantee 3 Years". The EH site also sells seconds, which have very minor flaws (e.g. a very small dimple on the surface), and those are "covered by Emile Henry's limited household three (3) year warranty against breakage due to workmanship". Well, mine has a small dimple and a couple of tiny marks inside that I thought were flecks of black pepper (they're not -- they don't scrape off). I washed the dish but haven't used it yet.

Yesterday, I wrote to EH to ask why their site guarantees a dish for 10 years, but the label on mine says 3 years. I purchased the dish at Amazon.com, where the product description also says 10 years.

I haven't received a reply from EH yet, so I'll wait about a day and will call them if I don't receive a reply by then. Their "second" dish like this costs $20 less on their site. True, I paid $4 of my own money using Amazon gift cards, but I spent the gift cards believing I was getting the product as described.

Meanwhile I am giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I won't use the dish until I know it's THE ONE I intended to order, not a second.
