Electric Furnace to Replace Oil Furnace?

I have a 70yr old house which still has the original oil furnace. It is not running that efficiently, is huge and frightening to look at (think Freddy Kruger), requires a large oil tank and is, obviously a little long in the tooth. Given the wonders of modern technology (and the price of oil) I was hoping to be able to replace the oil furnace which heats a convection current water system that flows to custom radiators throughout the house, with an electric equivalent. But in my googling I have only found HVAC systems. I haven't contacted any professionals yet because I have no idea what I am talking about and don't want to appear as ignorant as I in fact am.

But being scientific about it I don't see why an oil burning system to heat water in my radiators should not be fairly easily replaced with an electric equivalent.

Please can anyone set me straight on this. Is this possible? What would such an approach be called in the industry?

Thanks.
