Connecting stained cabinet crown with painted crown in room

I am trying to finish up a DIY kitchen redo and am stuck trying to figure out the trim on top of cabinets. I can either top the cabinets with crown about 4 inches below the ceiling, or extend the trim with a panel and take them all the way up and add crown where cabinets and ceiling meet. The cabinets are a stained cherry, and the rest of the room, which connects into the dining room, has a simple painted white crown molding.

If I take the cabinets up to the deiling and add a stained molding at the top, how should it tie in with the painting molding? Should they be the same molding just different finishes? Should I make them very distinct in size/style? If so, which should be bigger?

I would appreciate any pictures that illustrate how to get the two moldings to work together.

Thanks!

Anna
