Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Please help with joining crown molding with kitchen cabinet crown

I would like to have white painted crown molding installed in my home. I have a dilemma in my kitchen. I am not sure what to do about this situation with the raised corner cabinet. I would appreciate any advice in regards to options. I have contacted my cabinet company to see about raising the crown to the ceiling on this cabinet. Does the wall crown have to match cabinet crown in size and profile?

You've got several problems. If you buy more of the same crown from your cabinet company, you'll still have to deal with the gap above the corner cabinet. If you raise the existing crown to the ceiling, it's very unlikely you'd find unpainted crown that matches it's size and profile, plus you'd then have to deal with a gap between the cabinets and the bottom of the crown.

Here's what I would do. Choose the new crown mold you want for the rest of the room and measure it's height (how far down from the ceiling it comes). Make a mark on the wall at that height, then use a level to transfer that height to the stained crown and mark it. Then, trace the old, existing crown's profile onto the wall with a pencil. Now you have a mark where the bottom of the new crown will intersect the old crown, and another mark where the old crown will have to be narrowed to fit underneath the new.

Carefully remove the stained crown from the corner cabinet. Next, build a frame above the corner cabinet that's the same height as the new crown, and that extends beyond the cabinet to the point at which the new crown will intersect the old.

Now, install the new, painted crown around the kitchen and across the new soffit. Last, run the old crown through a table saw and cut it down so that it fits underneath the new crown.

I would leave your cabinet molding as is, it is very nice.

I like the idea of moving the cabinets up and putting a shelf underneath. If not, I would just paint above them and leave it alone. I read on an older thread that an easy way to "dust" cabinets that don't go to the ceiling is to just put newspaper up there and a few times a year take down the old papers and put up new ones.

Yes, we're having the cabinets made. They're framed cabinets from Kraftmaid, and come in 3 inch increments for height. I could have gone with 30, but then there's a lot of room left at the top, and I don't want a big crown. 33 inch gives me more storage space and still leaves just enough room for a 3/4 inch or 1 inch crown at the top. I want something straight as Sophie Wheeler suggested, not something that is angled. They have something called "solid stock" that is finished on 3 sides and gives you some flexibility in placement. Same for the light rail - just a straight edge mounted so it comes out slightly beyond the bottom of the cabinet.

I am so grateful for this feedback I have received today. And thank you again PPF and Bryan911 for all the helpful details. I am going to see about a new upper cabinet. We’ve put too much into this project to let two upper cabinets good us up :) I had a lot of people including a designer I hired for a short time out eyes on this, and we still missed it. Just goes to show you how difficult it can be to build a house and get all the details to work out as hoped. PPF — the reason we broke up the expanse of the pantry door with shaker panels was since we wanted it to look integrates with the cabinetry and to break up the tall doors since we have 10’ ceilings. I do agree also about hinges that can be hidden. It also annoys me that they are such a bright gold when my lights and cabinet hardware will be more of an aged, satin brass. Is it easy to switch out hinges and not mess up the doors?

ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks.

I think in most homes, nobody notices when crown molding isn’t there. So I would not install the white crown (at least, not in the kitchen).

The crown molding on the corner cabinet looks stupid. It is sooooo close to the ceiling without touching it. Why in the world would anyone do that? The lower cabinets are understandable, but the corner us nuts. Any chance it could be raised to the ceiling? Is there enough cabinet frame behind it?

you will have to order #1 Tall filler, #1 Crown the same as what you have, #1 Scribe. ...all in the same finish and style to match the rest so the crown can go to the ceiling.
