LG 2277 - Need helping solving noise and vibration issues

Hi to All -

I did a search on LG2277, and looked at most of the discussions, but didn't find anything exactly related to my question, so I figured I'd see if anyone on the forum has any new experience or suggestions.

I have an LG2277 that I have owned for about 11 months now and although I hate to admit it, this has been a problem pretty much since the beginning. I know I have been procrastinating on this, but just when I decide that it is time to do something about the problem, the machine seems to behave better... unfortunately it never seems to last. As background... I bought my washer from a Big Box store and I did NOT buy an extended warranty (which is part of why I have been procrastinating since I don't want to call in a repair person if there is a solution I can take care of myself). The washer is in a first-floor laundry room (substantial plywood subfloor over wood floor joists over crawl space) and was installed with the pedestal drawer and it has always seemed like a tight fit to the base (in a good way). It is balanced.

The problem I have is noise (any thing from a ticking noise to a really loud "clacketa-clacketa-clacketa") and vibration so bad I can feel it on the second floor on the far side of the house! Not all the time, but enough! It is particularly bad when I have anything heavy in it (jeans and/or sweatshirts especially... even queen-size sheets). It is incredibly bad when I try to use the higher spin speeds. So I have adapted my laundry procedure to make sure that my laundry loads are not too big, that I "space" any heavy items around the edge of the drum, and I don't use spin speeds higher than "Medium", yet the problem still occurs. And unfortunately, this means that my reasons for buying the frontloading machine are essentially void (smaller loads negates the water-savings to some extent and lower spin speeds negates the energy savings since there is no reduction in drying times). :(

So before I call a repair person, I was wondering if anyone has any experience on their FL washer with and without the pedestal drawer. Should I try to take the washer off the pedestal to see if it helps the problem? I do like having the pedestal... but I would sacrifice it if it would solve some of the noise and vibration. I hesitate to "just give it a try" since the machine is so heavy and it would be tough for DH and I to do it ourselves. Is there something else I should try or look for?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Paula, welcome to the forum. I have a 1 month old LG 2277 with no vibration issues at all. My step mother has the Samsung made Neptune on a pedestal and has lots of vibration issues which is why I chose not to go with the pedestal. I have noticed that when I don't put enough into the machine that it has a lot harder time balancing the load when going into spin. It vibrates enough for me to feel it in my house but it is never consistently vibrating excessively. I reccomend you experiment with taking the machine off of the pedestal and see how that helps. I have a 2077 that makes a noise like what you're describing under the circumstances you're describing. My washer's noise is coming from the door rattling. When I push against the door the noise stops. I used to own the 2277 before we moved though and it never made that noise.

I rent an apartment that is heated/air conditioned by a Mitsubishi wall mounted unit with two pumps installed on the outside wall of my bedroom. Last year, I didn't seem to recall having any problems, but since winter set in, this year, there have been periods of excessive humming noise and vibration so that I could not sleep. Then a couple of weeks ago, during a snowstorm, water came through the ceiling unit in my living room. It ceased rather quickly once I shut down the unit. Interestingly enough, the outside noise and vibration seemed to have quietened down until a week or so ago. My landlord checked and confirmed that he heard the noise outside my window, and called a service technician, who came today. Low and behold, nice and quiet, no issues. I told him it was intermittent, but the company doesn't really deal with Mitsubishi so the representative couldn't offer an explanation, just suggested to tape record it when the noise happens again. I am not crazy or oversensitive. As a matter of fact, I have severe hearing impairment in one ear and cannot hear the alarm go off if I am lying on that side. Yet, for nights and days and weeks, the noise and vibration was so intense I couldn't sleep or concentrate on any activity. Has anyone else had this problem?

ok guys, finally got the vibration absorbers installed on my freon lines today.. unfortunetly not very cold here tonight so the unit's not running alot. If you'll remember before I said there was a very loud Hum and vibration noise coming from a 5 ton hp. I first noticed the hum when I was sitting in the Den watching tv one night. ( please note the heat pump unit is located right outside the den so I wasn't that surprised that I could hear this hum in the den.. but when I went upstairs the hum was very noticeable in a spare bedroom and adjoining bathroom. So today my contractor comes out and installs 2 vibration absorbers on my freon lines..( 2 different sizes ) one is made by Mars ( motors and armatures inc ) the other is made by a company called "Packless" ( see thier website @ http://www.packless.com/splash.html. Once you get to the homepage, click on the logo, then on vibration absorbers for more details ) Anyway they have been installed and I can honestly say I notice a difference. Is the hum completely gone? well the answer to that is not completely downstairs in the den, but it does seem to be much better..In fact with the television on it is hardly noticeable. And my wife says I'm being Anal about it saying she can't hear anything but the unit ( which again, is located on the other side of the wall ) running. It is slight so she may be right, and of course that's a good thing. I can tell you there is a world of difference upstairs in the spare bedroom and adjoining bathroom. Hardly noticeable at all. In addition to installing the vibration absorbers my contractor also ran a metal rod down into the ground and then tied the freon lines to the rod to help divert vibration away from the house and down into the soil. so the big question is did this help? The answer is very much so...and if my wife is right, and all I'm now hearing in the den is the hp unit itself running, then it worked 100 %. But even in the worse case, it has helped tremendously. SQTroll, of course I have a brain. I like the simplicity of the front loader and the cycle choices. Can your ancient machine sanitize clothes without bleach? Nice to know we can wash our dog's stuff in there and have it nice and clean. That goes for our sheets as the dog likes to "Borrow" our bed when we are not home. Can your ancient machine use a steam cycle to get wrinkles and odors out? Ours can. I like to know that if I pick the stain cycle the machine will do a profile wash to get out most stains (starts with cold then works to hot). I like to know I can select spin speed so the delicate sweaters get low, the towels get the bejeezus spun out of them, etc. I like how I can put in 9-10 pairs of jeans and have them come out clean. Or wash 2-3 sets of queen sheets at a time and have them spotless. Or the comforter. Sorry if I like to have a little more control over my wash than the dumb top loader where there is limited options on caring for the clothes. Total repairs on these Kenmore (LG) front loaders over 2.5 years. $0. You act like nobody has ever replaced a timer, coupling, belt, or transmission on a top loader. That is not true - plenty have replaced plenty of parts on top loaders. I'll stick with my clean clothes in a front loader that I can have some control over. You hear good and bad about all brands. There's many happy LG owners posting on this forum. There's people who have had bad luck with all brands. That's called reality. A heater isn't truly mandatory in my opionion but I think it's a good idea as long as it works on enough cycles to be functional, and raises the temperature of the water, not just maintains the temperature. The Epics have gotten a lot of good reviews, and they should, they're Whirlpools and a proven design. Samsung does not build machines for them anymore - that's old information. I understand your budget concerns and I think you're looking at good models. I do like the suggestion of the Miele though. Now $2000 for the washer is a lot, but considering the amount of laundry you do, you can justify it. However, with any of them, I would suggest you consider NOT getting a matching dryer. Save the money there and put it toward the washer. A large (7.4+) CF Whirlpool dryer can be bought for about $400-$500 or less and they're excellent dryers. I bought mine for $300 and would buy it again in an instant. If you're going HE, and especially with a heater, you need to be prepared for long cycle times. 2-3 hours worth. It takes time to heat the water and the tumbling action needs more time to clean the clothes over an agitator. You sound sold on a FL so I won't suggest looking at the HE TLs. And I haven't found anyone who can give rational reasons for steam either in the washer or dryer. I think the word is "gimmick". If you have a laundry tub next to your washer, you can run the water in the tub to get the hot water close to the washer to have it warmer going into the tub. Keep in mind the tub itself will cool the water down. That's why a good heater could be valuable. But it's not the end all be all either. Advantage sometimes? Yes. Essential? No. People have washed and sanitized clothes for years without them. And as you're looking, get figures on water temperatures in degrees, not ambiguous terms like "hot", "warm" or "cold". What's hot to you may well be cold to me.

According to LG, the 2277 should be on a concrete floor (see owners manual)... I know some people in this forum (who install FLs on wood floors) have some luck by putting their washer on top of a "stall mat" (you can buy at farm store.. is THICK rubber). I can't vouch for it.. just stating what I've seen here.

It's all about physics, it is a jumbo FL spinning a very heavy load on a wood floor.

That machine needs to be perfectly balanced, and it needs a very solid floor.

It is not the machine. It is the floor.

Some machines are better than others but LG is a big offender when it comes to vibration. Taking it off the ped. will help as you are lowering the center of gravity but it may not fully solve your problem. When LG came out with their front loaders no-one knew about all the vibration issues and almost all are in the same boat as yourself. Sell it and buy a Whilpool/Kenmore Elite or Maytag Epic.
