Tracey, I cut this out just today! I am eager to try it for my DGBabies as they love pop tarts. Dough isn't my strong suit either so I was thinking about ready made dough.

Thanks everyone! I hesitate to post this link cause then you will see how pretty these are supposed to be :) I filled them with plain old strawberry jam and I loved it.

Poptarts are one of my secret vices, although I no longer buy them due to the amount of calories and BHT they have. I MUST find time somday to give these a try. I wonder if I will have more success with them than my current quest to find a good reheatable homeade waffle, so far a dismal failure. I have lots of homeade jam usually on hand though. But me and dough just do not mix . . . A good tart is worth the calories!

Not trying to HiJack. Just a different idea.

I make something similar but use a Cookie Dough and
cut 3 1/2 inch circles.
Or make a Ball and flatten it with a large Can

Put filling in the center, then fold over like a Ravioli
and pinch the edges, like you did.
Use a little flour to roll the dough.

The kids can help !!!

If you put theirs and yours side by side I would choose yours Tracey. Yours just looks tastier to me. Yum!

Tracey, I beg to differ with you and agree with Joan. I think yours look much better than the ones on the link. Better than any of the others they posted too. Two sticks of butter is a bit much but guess that works out to about what I'd use when I used to eat pop tarts. After they'd toast, I'd turn them over on the back and cut the back into little squares and slather them with butter so it would melt into it. That was the only way I liked them, lol. Yours I sure would eat straight up. Smiles.

Great job on those pop tarts! I tried making them after finding them on Peabody's blog last year. Mine were not, shall we say, attractive?!?

Peabody put sprinkles on hers. I tried that too - well, it was not quite like Peabody's.

That looks nothing like a poptart--that looks GOOD!! Way too good. I'm not gonna look at the recipe (thanks for the butter warning!) for fear of temptation.

I do a similar thing with pie crust, but fill with a cinnamon sugar mixture and bake.

I wonder if I could bake my fried pies? It is just pie crust with fruit filling....don't see why not. Might save on a couple of calories....which is almost silly isn't it.

Another here who thinks yours look better Tracey! They're prettier and look very tasty.

I'm a pop tart junky too and will have to try these. I would think they are pretty much the same thing as a fried pie, just flatter and square. I do bake the fried pies now, both sweet and savory. Yum, it sounds good right now!

Also, don't forget that you can do the puff pastry thing with a filling.

Joann, I appreciate your kind words. I decided I liked the idea of a glaze over powdered sugar which is completely messy.

Coconut, I used to sometimes butter my pop tarts back when I was a kid. In for a penny, in for a pound :)

Oh Pat, those are some pretty pop tarts Peabody made! The sprinkles just put them over the top. Mine are definitely more "rustic."

Fori, just remind yourself that these are homemade goodies and superior in every way to the store bought stuff so a little won't hurt you :) At least that's what I keep telling myself!

Gldno, I love the idea of a cinnamon sugar mixture. Hmmm...and I don't know why you couldn't bake your pies instead of frying if you are using a pastry crust. My great aunt always made fried pies using biscuit dough.

Beth, I never thought of puff pastry. Definitely would have been easier than rolling out this dough.

Jude, I would also like to see recipes. Like I said, my great aunt always makes hers with biscuit dough so I never thought about making them any other way.

That's an insane amount of butter, but that's probably why they taste so good. :)

Jude, I don't really have any recipes so to speak. It's all make as you go. The apple fried pies are just from sautéing apples in a skillet with a little butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. I let that cool before putting in it on a small round of pie pastry (looks like Lou's).

The savory, hmmm, chicken is done a little like chicken pot pie but a little thicker 'gravy' and beef the same way. Using chicken stock and beef stock respectively, and whatever vegetables I have on hand. I haven't tried the beef suet pastry that's in Levy's (Barenbaums?) Pastry Bible book - yet! I want to but I'm not real familiar with working with beef suet.

Also, I'm trying to recreate a recipe from an old boss of mine. She made little appetizer size phylo(sp?) triangles with a chicken filling that was melt in your mouth good. Never could get her recipe.

If I think of anything else that I do, I'll add it..

Well, I was just thinking, this morning at church, when I should have had my mind on other things...I made some Chocolate Raspberry Jam last summer and doesn't that sound good as filling!!!

Beth, I love most anything that involves apples so that will be something I'm sure to try. I also will probably use some of my strawberry preserves. Nice thing about the poptarts is that they could conceivably all be different. Right?

Food for thought for sure.

Tracey, those look just delicious, and homemade jam of any kind would be a good filling and a good use for those times when I'm trying to use up the last of whatever jam I made way too much of.

I think pre-made crust would be good, although homemade is always better. I can't imagine that little bit of sugar would make the dough very sweet though, does it?

I'm glad I don't like Pop-Tarts, I can eat the middle but I break off all the edges, LOL. The Princess and Bruvver devour them, so maybe they'd like homemade ones. Of course, they like the chocolate fudge ones best, but maybe I can change their minds.

Frosted strawberry were my fanvorite as a kid. Yours look great Tracey!! I'll have to pass this on to my DS who has five kids.

Annie, I thought the same thing when I made these about how little sugar is in the dough but it actually works really well. I guess it's the sweetness of the jam but thought the flavor was perfect. My kids love pop tarts also but they only get them when I find the organic ones on sale or when they go to OH to visit their gran :) I would love to try these with some of your homemade jam.

David, I'm with you-strawberry is my favorite hands down.

Tracey, maybe it's me, but I think a really sweet dough with that really sweet filling and then icing would just be too much sweet, so I think the less sweet dough would be perfect.

OK, so as soon as it's strawberry season, I'll make you some homemade jam and you can make me poptarts. (grin)

Actually, I'm thinking that Nancy's apple maple jam in those with some maple glaze would be really good...

Sounds like a plan Annie!!! I won't tell you what kind of store bought jelly/jam I used in these. Homemade would put them over the top! Any chance you will be in OH around July 4th? I think that's the only time we are going to make it up there this summer.

Heck, Tracey, I don't know. We're supposed to go there next weekend for a family wedding, but Elery doesn't really want to go.

His son's wedding is Memorial Day weekend and Amanda's wedding is in October, so all our time has been spent planning weddings, LOL, no fun visits!

Definitely, you have to have some homemade jam for those poptarts, and I'll definitely have to make them for The Princess and Bruvver, they'd love to spread the jam and drizzle the frosting, I'll bet.
