Whirlpool Cabrio Woes/Warnings
Comments (72)tcake, You pose an interesting question. Are you referring to Fisher & Paykel's new Aquasmart impeller washer? I assume that you are, because the impeller version of the Cabrio is actually quite a bit different from the agitator based F&P washer. Unfortunately, I don't know nearly as much about the Aquasmart as I do about F&P's agitiator washers, but I will try to compare the two products based on what I do know. The biggest difference between the Aquasmart and the Cabrio is the drum capacity. Whirlpool claims 4.5 cubic feet IEC drum capacity, whereas F&P currently claims 3.7 cubic feet IEC drum capacity for their washers, which is actually cheating on their part, because the "IEC' capacity rating was originally intended for washers without agitators, and until now F&P's washers have all had agitators. They justify this by claiming that their washers are HE rated, and so the rating applies to them as well, but they are wrong. The rating only refers to usable wash capacity, not energy efficiency, or water consumption. Anyway, the "true" capacity of these washers is 3.9 cubic feet for the Cabrio, and 3.0 cubic feet for the F&P. This is for F&P's agitator washers, so the Aquasmart with impeller will have more than this, probably something close to 3.1 cubic feet, which means that the Cabrio has a 0.8 cubic feet drum capacity advantage over the Aquasmart, or 26% more usable capacity. This is a lot. Cabrio obviously has the clear advantage in this regard. Unfortunately however for Cabrio, this capacity advantage requires a larger size washer. The Cabrio is 27 inches square, while the Aquasmart is 25 inches square. This means that the Aquasmart will fit into a lot more laundry closets, a clear advantage for Aquasmart. The Cabrio has a porcelain top with a tempered glass lid, while the Aquasmart uses plastic for both the top and the lid. This is definitely an advantage for Cabrio, because plastic tops and lids are not nearly as durable, and will probably start to look scratched and dingy after just a few years of use. The Cabrio has a rotary dial cycle selector, while the Aquasmart has an LCD display. This is probably more of a personal preference thing, but I'm inclined to favor the Cabrio rotary dial for more ease of use. The Aquasmart probably uses spray rinses, while the Cabrio doesn't. This will result in significant water savings for Aquasmart over Cabrio, but it requires the user to specifically select a deep fill rinse if they want to use fabric softener. In my view however, this is the better compromise, because water savings are important. However, it's important to remember that spray rinses will not be as effective as a deep fill rinse for particulate soils and pet hair. I think the Aquasmart lets the user choose a deep fill wash, while this choice isn't directly available to Cabrio users. It is possible to cheat a little however, because there are some Cabrio cycles that use more water than others. These are the major differences. Other than these the machines are probably quite similar. As far as which machine is best, if you have the space, and want the extra capacity, then the Cabrio is a good choice. If not, then the Aquasmart is probably a pretty good choice as well....See MoreWhirlpool Cabrio - problems with balance and more
Comments (2)Your Cabrio was manufactured in 29th week of 2006. F51 is failure of the RPS (rotor position sensor) which is on the motor stator. The basket should rotate freely with the rotor removed. There may be some magnetic cogging with the rotor in place but it should still otherwise rotate freely. Could be a bad bearing on the drive shaft if there's notable resistance or drag to rotation. The basket floats slightly upward (via air captured in a dome under it) to physically disengage from the drive cog when the machine fills with water so the agitator can oscillate separately. It settles back down for spin when the water is drained. Lint/debris, mineral residue, or even rusting on the drive shaft can prevent the basket from slipping properly up/down. Grabbing the basket and lifting on it should indicate if it moves up/down OK. Not unusual that the tub suspension rods wear over time and contribute to increased off-balance. A flaky RPS can also cause excessive off-balance alarms (if the load isn't really off-balance). There's no physical off-balance sensor switch. Off-balance is sensed by the motor controller software via monitoring the rotational characteristics and inertia as read through the RPS....See MoreTop Loading HE Washer Out of Balance Question
Comments (10)Whirlpool still uses the same dryer design today as they did when you bought yours, I would think there is still some sort of timer available that would work but I could be wrong. I believe there are also repair services that can fix timers, I've never tried one though. What's the point of replacing both if one machine is broken? None of the washers today are anywhere near as well made as your Maytag. If I were you, assuming the dryer is unrepairable (which I kind of doubt) I would replace it with the exact same thing: a brand new Whirlpool, 29 inch wide with the lint filter on top (NOT their 27" with lint filter in the door) and I would leave the washer be. Then, if the washer conked out I would replace it with a modern front loader (NOT a modern top loader). It's one thing if water conservation is very important to you or your community (in which case you should have replaced it with a front loader a long time ago) but it doesn't sound like that's the case here. The tone of your post suggests you like what you have and don't want to give it up, so why do it if you don't have to?...See MoreSpeed Queen Balancing Issues
Comments (115)I know Emma. It can get so confusing, and even I sometimes am like, well how much detergent do I use?! This bottle doesn't seem to have "turbo' on it, but it is HE. Even when I overdosed that load, I didn't have a suds mess up and out the drain pipe. Promising! As for how much to dose on a new bottle, vs an old bottle, what I do is use the dosing lines that are on 'that' cap, from 'that' bottle. Sometimes the caps change sizes, so your line 1 can now be a line 2 used to be. Make sense? I'm liking this formula so far. I also like the cap a lot. I've had a translucent Tide cap that is impossible to see the lines because the detergent sticks to the cap. This one, I think from the plastic slickness, coupled with the new thiner formula makes that problem go away--to date. Things might muck up in the future, but right now, I'm a happy camper with this formula. I find it cleans a little better than the last time I had a jug of this. I got it on Amazon from the official Tide section. It had a $3 digital coupon on it, and I bought it to have a back up in case a different F&G liquid I like changes their formula to something that doesn't work well for us. I've been skunked too many times now with all these "new and improved' innovations. I plan ahead when I can. Just try to find the amount of detergent that gets your laundry clean and also doesn't suds out your drainpipe....See Moreregus_patoff
