My tiny version of Oprah's Favorite Things

I exchange small gifts with a few of my girlfriends at Christmas. This year I found a kitchen gadget (a new kind of veg peeler) that is unique and I love it! I am looking for a cute and interesting way to wrap it. I plan on including a couple of recipes with the peeler. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a foursome of girlfriends that meets every month or two for dinner, and last year we started a new holiday tradition (can we call it a tradition if it's happened only once?) where we each give the other 3 the same gift -- something we've found over the course of the year that we've loved for ourselves, or just a good idea, or whatever. The price limit is low -- I think we said under $20 or $15. So it was a bit challenging! (For anyone who's interested, here's what was exchanged: a keychain w/ tiny flashlight attached; a book on meditation; personalized notepads; and a fancy bottle of olive oil.)

How about wrapping it in a dishtowel? Put everything in the center of the towel and gather up the ends, like a little satchel, and tie it with raffia or ribbon.

Rather....do you have a picture or name of the veg peeler...I've never found one I like!

Like Sue's idea of wrapping in a dish towel--how about a Christmas one? Or, how about a veggie bag like this?

Most excellent, Larissa! Babies rock! I discovered a baby growing alongside my Sumatra, and my Germa bulbs both have several new babies! Yee-Ha! "Love is like a bomb, Baby, c'mon get it on!" Can you guess what's blasting my eardrums this morning? "Pour some sugar on me... in the name of love... Pour some sugar on me... c'mon fire me up!" Oh Yeah! My fav band of all time! I'm so old... Back to the hippis... I've noticed a lot of new growth on several of my bulbs... and 3 out 4 of my Papilios are pushing up new green leaves! Outside the windows... it's frigidly cold... a whopping 17 degrees... and the mega snow is falling, or I should say, blowing... sideways!! A very good day to stay in and listen to some music... with a cup of hot coffee in one hand!

I finished examining the plants today and applying another dose of fungicide to the worst affected. It looks like the progression of the disease is slowing down and maybe even stopping. Yellowing leaves are pretty much gone and the plants seem stable. I am going to have to keep a close eye on things and also make sure that the plants are not drying out unexpectedly. Not all of my Hoyas are in the same potting mix and some seem to dry out before the others but because I have so many I have to water on a rotating schedule. I think that I will be able to save all of my plants even though some are not in very good shape, Hoya megalaster is down to two leaves and they are showing spotting but there is new growth starting as well. I am going to have to pay special attention to the plants that may have virus and be sure to discard them if they show further signs of infection. At this time I feel it might be premature to diagnose any plants with virus because of the stress of the fungal infection but I think I need to be very careful for the sake of my collection. It has been snowing here for days with over a meter of snow falling in the last three days, most areas are at least waist deep. The entire city is shut down but today is an absolutely beautiful calm and brilliantly sunny day. I feel like the stress is just melting away, a welcome feeling that's for sure. Mike

I received my box from Faye today and wow! what a large box she sent stuffed full of goodies! I love everything she sent which included a beautiful tin "welcome" sign with flowers and a dragonfly, a darling patriotic cottage style windchime, a large pack of seed bags,plant ties,post it notes, sharpie markers, glitter glue, garden gloves, hand lotion, an "Outdoor Favorites Recipe Book" which my husband confiscated already, a great variety of wonderful candy and bouncing balls for the grandkids (they're gonna love them), and a bunch of different garden seeds which I can't wait to plant. And last but not least, the cutest card with an adorable puppy and kitty on the front with a surprise amazon MP3 gift card inside so I can purchase download my own favorite music! Perfect! I adore everything, but my favorite is the patriotic cottage style windchime! It matches my house style just right and how cute! You sent too much Faye. Everything is greatly appreciated. I would have chosen the same things if I were buying it for myself! You are such a great gardening friend! So thoughtful! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Sue N.

angelaid--sure wish I had a Roomba. Several people here--I think flamey is one--have them and really like them. If I were giving my favorite things, I'd give: Microplane grater--grates lemon or orange zest in no time and no big mess either. Books (now that's very Oprah-ish). I'd like everyone on my list to read all the good books I've read. Top of the list would be "Lord of the Flies". My fav. KitchenAid Mixer--well now, can you tell I've been in the kitchen a lot lately? Oil of Olay regenerist micro-exfoliating wet cleansing cloths. Love them. Can't think of anything else but if I was Oprah, I'd probably have many more things that I could afford to love.

Individual homemade apple crip/pie/cobblers wrapped in cellophane, peeler and recipe cards tied at top?

How about putting it in a fun-colored plastic or metal colander or strainer? Maybe add one of those metal steamer baskets -- great for steaming veggies! :)

Maybe a small plastic cutting board?

Maybe add a slotted spoon?

Yes -- add a fun dish towel -- always handy to receive a fresh dish (or tea!) towel! :)

I have included a picture of the vegetable peeler (the green one). I love this little thing! One way I use it is to julienne cut zucchini, cook it quickly in boiling water and use the zucchini as an alternative to pasta. Thanks for the wrapping ideas--the dishtowel will be cute!

Since you sew, why not make a little pouch to "wrap" it that could be used in their purses for things they want to easily find.
