chicken question... is it safe or should I toss it?

Before anyone starts quoting "When it doubt, throw it out!" Let me explain.

I bought a whole chicken about three weeks ago from Publix. I froze it when I got home. Last week, I put it in the fridge to thaw it out. Well, I forgot about it and it's been sitting in there uncooked for five days. Do you think it's safe to cook, or should I throw it out? I understand that cooking a chicken to the right temp can kill bacteria, but if enough have accumulated, they can also create toxins which cannot be destroyed by cooking. Is that right?

Thanks! Bring on the cliches!
