Heat pump-full sun in summer... ?

Hi - I know nothing about HVAC and I tried to do some searching in this forum but what I was reading didn't make much sense.

I think I *kinda* understand how a heat pump works, in my pretty-handy-for-a-girl sort of way. I understand that our heat pump works both for heat and (in the opposite direction) for A/C. I would think that direct sun on the (?)condenser(?) would help in the winter but be a problem in the summer. Is that right?

Is that the case, and would it help to make a lattice screen or something to surround the unit (keeping an appropriate clearance, of course) to shade it in the summer?

It's in full sun most of the day, we are in southeastern Indiana.

Thanks!
