Heat pump a/c too cold in summer

Question:

How can I reduce the cooling from the heat pump downstairs, and possibly have a bit more upstairs during the summer months?

We live in a home that is about 4400 square feet, about 2200 sq. ft with 9 foot ceilings on each floor)

It's a walkout basement. The upstairs has mostly large floor to ceiling film covered windows.

The lower floor has a deck shading the bedrooms from the sun during the summer months.

Now, downstairs, in the summer with the a/c on, it's cold enough to hang meat!

The upstairs seems that the a/c is keeping it cool enough (but, I could wish for a little more).

We have the programmable Thermostat located upstairs, set to come on at 74 F.

If your ductwork has manual dampers on the trunk lines, they need to be adjusted for the cooling season to direct more cold air upstairs. You'd be looking for metal handles on the ductwork which open/close each trunk line, if they are installed. Technically your ductwork should be designed such that the manual dampers aren't necessary. Heat pumps are designed for cooling load.

Thanks Ryan,

I'll have a look and see if there are any handles in place.

We're on the west coast in Canada, so I don't know if cooling is the focus of the installers here.

Ryan, I am guessing that the air handler has these handles?
Can these handles to redirect the cooled air upstairs be retro fitted?

That is a crazy high gas rate. Do you have a flat fee worked into that? We pay $10 a month flat so if you look at what 1 therm costs, it is $11. But truly the therm costs $1. A NG furnace will always save a few in a dual fuel situation but not enough to make it worth it for you. Where is your MBR? Don't you really just want the MBR at 66 at night? What you probably want is more tonnage which isn't going to work with your existing ductwork most likely. So it is pretty cost prohibitive compared to other options. The other options are to reduce your heat load. Air sealing is cheap enough to do some things DIY - do you have attic stairs? Do you have cans into the attic? Sealing these things may lower your temp enough. Controlling solar gain is really where the real savings is. The cheapest is solar screens but they do effect the transmission of light. Plant trees. If you don't have low SHGC windows this can make a huge difference. Switch to LED lights - anything used over an hour a day is a reasonable payback and it will lower the a/c load. LED is far better than CFLs and we find it acceptable everywhere except the bathroom. We keep our master at 65 at night (and high 50s in the winter) with a ceiling fan so I understand where you are coming from. Since your usage is so high, it would definitely pay to get some high efficiency equipment. But overall, the best answer to a cooler house in the summer is not to change the a/c size but to control the loads. I do feel like your usage is pretty high even given your locale and requirements. I peaked at $150 (probably $90 in a/c) in July this year with a 65 degree bedroom suite for 5000 sqft in NC. Obviously you are warmer but not double.

Hi All. Live in eastern Ontario and just got installed a Greenspeed 25VNA048 heat pump w a 59MN7080 gas furnace to stop paying for oil. It was a learning curve for this system as it is an advanced heat pump system - expect the competition to ramp up their pumps HSPF to 13 also or lose the market. My coldest night so far was -15C and we got our 21C/70F indoor temp in our 2800 sq.ft house.My balance point is set for -17C/1F and I should be getting to -18C this wed/Thurs evening for a real test for the normal switch to gas furnace. Yes the system by default uses gas heat on defrost. Without it it would be blasting cold air in the ducts for 5 minutes. So the gas frnace heat modulates at 65% so to neutralize the cold air so air temp swings are minimum for comfort. Yes you can disable this on the touch screen interface in service/ setup/ heat source lockouts. Yes one can monitor electrical costs in $$$ or Kw and gas $$$ or therms on a per day/ per month and per year to date on the interface. I've experimented between the different options in choosing efficiency or comfort and there is a noticeable difference to the environment and a slight increase in costs of electricity between the two. I do prefer comfort. On an average cold day 0C/32F w -5C at night it costs me @ $5 per day in electricity and with heat on defrost w/ continuous low fan for only an additional cost of $1 every third day (.33cents per day). (yes the different areas of kw usage is separated in the readout) The only puzzle I have to resolve is last Saturday nite at 3 am the house felt cold - it was 15 F outside. Gas furnace came on for a couple of hours before pump came back ???. No codes or resetable fault codes registered on interface. The only way for the gas to go on at that temp way above the balance point is a 2 degree drop or a manual increase of temp of 2 degrees or more. So why did did happen.... stay tuned.... Gotta love saving money. Wow, a 30 year-old heat pump. I thought that my 21 year-old Trane was a stretch. A 20 degree split temperature is more typical measured at just before the evap coil and just after it (not at the registers). These are the locations where the temps must be taken to calculate the split temp. If it is very humid in the house, the split temp will be less as the coil is removing humidity which takes energy. If your compressor is original, you've probably lost some capacity to cool/heat from leaking valves. Make sure that your filter is clean as well as the evap coil. Checking supply/return ducts for leakage is also a good idea. As far as heating temps, in Feb '06, I measured 88 degree air coming out of the closest register when it was 71 degrees inside the house and 30 degrees outside. This was with my 21 year-old Trane Weathertron heat pump. The Technical Information Manual for my new 14 SEER Goodman heat pump shows a Delta T of 27 degrees at 40 degrees outside, 23 degrees at 30 outside, and 20 degrees at 20 outside temp. The numbers are based on 70 degree inside air, so air coming out of the air handler will range from be 90 to 97 degrees. The Copeland scroll compressor in the new unit may contribute to the high temps of the heat pump. Best of luck to you.

"In terms of the Bosch I doubt it would make much difference if you sized it for heating... unless you needed more heat than a 5 ton unit can produce." Name plate capacity of a heat pump refers to cooling mode only. The term "ton" refers to a ton of refrigeration which is 12,000 BTU/hr. Heating capacity is usually referred to in BTU/hr. The heating capacity of a heat pump declines as a function of decreasing temperature, so it can't be labelled without defining the outdoor conditions. Stated otherwise, a 5 ton heat pump does not have the same heating capacity as a 60,000 BTU/hr furnace--the capacity of which is independent of outdoor conditions. "However, the Bosch can deliver heat down to 5F." That statement can be a bit misleading. While a particular heat pump may be able to extract useful heat down to 5F, that doesn't guarantee it will be able to do so at a sufficient rate to meet the required heating demand without supplemental (backup) heating e.g., electric resistance heat strips. When evaluating a heat pump in heating mode, we're interested in determining the balance point--the outdoor temperature at which the heating load of the home and heating capacity of the system are equal. Below that temperature supplemental heating will be required. For most heat pump systems and most homes (excluding uninsulated homes and super-insulated homes) the balance point usually falls in the 30 F to 35 F range. To be clear, that doesn't mean a particular heat pump won't extract useful heat below that temperature---it just means the amount of heat won't be sufficient to meet the total heating load required and backup heat will be needed. I suggest you consult with an HVAC design professional who can calculate the heating and cooling loads for your particular home and your particular climate zone. Those can be used to select the appropriate equipment and to design the duct work if you elect to go with a ducted system. And, for what it's worth, mike_home has been a contributor to this forum for a number of years. In general, his posts suggest that he knows what he doesn't know. What the previous poster meant that your ductwork, or where the ducting splits into the upstairs and downstairs runs, MIGHT have a damper that can be adjusted to direct more or less air into one space or the other. Think of a gate that can be opened and closed.

If not, your HVAC dealer can install some "retrofit" dampers to make you more comfortable. If all of your ductwork is enclosed in walls and ceiling, they may need to do a bit of "house surgery" to accomplish this.

Also, they may be able to set your air handler to run at a lower overall speed. This would slow down the airflow in the entire system, but may be satisfactory.

What would slowing down the speed accomplish?

And, wouldn't slowing down the speed affect the whole house cooling/heating?

The house is 9 years old, I don't know why the gate wasn't installed in the first place.

yes slowing the speed will most certainly affect the whole house cooling and heating. But it may be an easier and less costly option to try first before going to the mess and expense of adding in retrofit dampers.

If you haven't done so already, see if some of your individual room vents can be closed off somewhat. Closing them on the lower level may help force more cooling upstairs.

Is there a problem with the heating being uneven, or just when cooling? If it is really only with the cooling, then the solar heat gain from upstairs windows and skylights is probably what is the source of the problem. Additional window coverings can make a difference to reduce solar gain, especially on east/west glass.

Yes, I agree that the solar gain is the sorce of the problem.

I called the local HVAC dealer, he said that I should call him again during the cooling months and he'll come over and have a look.
Over the phone he suggested that I could entertain a dual zone, but this would be costly.

I'll try partially closing the lower floor ceiling vents (again) and see if I can live with this configuration.
