Laundry goodies to try and bring back from Italy?

We will be in Italy for a week in February (renting an apartment so we'll have the use a washing machine). Any recommendations for laundry goodies to try there and bring back?

George Clooney - it is OK if he is a bit dirty - I will wash him when he gets here. That is my idea of a laundry goody!

Seriously, is the soap so much better in Italy that it is worth dragging it all the way across the ocean? I must be missing something. I just go to Target. Works on my regular old American dirt.

Have a great trip. I am very envious.

I posed the question because so many people on this board use European laundry products like Persil. I'd love to try it but the cost here is prohibitive (I'd have to mail order it and I don't want to waste my money if I don't like the smell of it - I'm very scent sensitive and end up using mostly unscented products here in the US because the scents of detergent and softener are so overwhelming here). So I thought being in Italy would give me a good chance of smelling and performance testing of some European products....

That's just too cool, kiddo! I think that's a good idea about planting corn here and there as accent pieces. I might do that too, next year, maybe with some beans! I picked a yard long bean yesterday and it really WAS a yard long! So far it's the longest one I've picked, most have been only a little over a foot long, but still lots of bean for the space. It was hilarious, I was so excited about the bean that I took it to show my husband. He's just had knee surgery and the home health nurse was with him, changing his bandage. When I came in dangling the bean, the nurse jumped. She thought it was a snake! LOL we all had a good laugh, she was really glad to know it was only a bean. The people who walk the park along my back fence just love to stop and chat and ask questions about the garden. I have met so many people that way. Even the guys who run the mowers for the City will stop and take their breaks at our fence. I just love volunteers! It's like a little present from Mother Nature. LOL I always let them grow if I can. Last year, I had several cantaloupe from volunteer plants. I had never grown them before, the seeds were from a supermarket cantaloupe that I had put in the compost bin. This year, I had a couple of plants come up in the compost bin, they look like a cucumber or squash plant. I haven't bought a cantaloupe in awhile so not sure what they are. I transplanted them someplace where they will grow better and we'll see, eventually, what they are. I can't remember putting cukes or squash out there either, so it might even be something the birds planted. In that case, it could be most anything. If there was no such thing as stock panels, I wouldn't know what to do! DH made a grape arbor and a trellis out of pipe, and we put pieces of stock panels up the sides and on the tops of them to support the things that grow there. Besides my two stock panel arches, I also have put a hog panel along the side of one raised bed because the asparagus keeps flopping out into the walkway if I don't. Normally I would use tomato cages, but I used all I had on other things and can't seem to buy any more, everyone's sold out and not ordering any more for the season. Beans are hard to see, to get every one of them. Pretty often, there will be ones I miss and they will have gotten too big to eat. I just let them go ahead and "ripen" on the vine and I use those beans for seed. If you "stew" your plums, you can use lots of the under-ripe ones, especially if you're going to make jam out of them. If you're sure the plum has no worms in it, you can put it into the pot, pit and all, and take the pit out after it has stewed (use only enough water with the plums to keep from sticking, and stew on low heat). The presence of the under-ripe ones makes it jell better. Use 6 C. stewed plums, 5 C sugar, a pat of butter, cook to the jell point and you will have nice jam. --Ilene

My grandmother was a striking beauty. She had eyes so blue they were almost white. She loved opera AND the Rolling Stones. She was a holocuast survivor from Berlin, having had her twin brother killed at Majdanek death camp. So she was a survivor. I think this is why her favorite flower was the rose. She only grew YELLOW roses. I am not sure she put the yellow rose and Texas together. So whenever I see a yellow rose, I think that she is sending me a hi. She also had the largest Pomgrante trees...too bad I did not like them back them. My other grandmother who I called Bubbie ( yiddish) always had fruit trees. I recall her tangerine tree so I am trying to grow one.She also had a massive live bamboo fence. I could never afford those "old" houses now. My grandma's house used to sit in back of the "Domed Shadows" which was a seedy night club.People would pee in her yard...now it is a fancy shopping center I was told. Her home was on the market for 249K recently! I looked at the listing on har.com...no more roses.

DD is in Arezzo in Tuscany teaching English in a small school to small children, adults and every age in between and loves it. Chase, I wish I did have a trip planned. Possibly next spring. I'm ready to go now! June31, thanks for the info -- one of the few catalogs I don't get, lol. Maybe the price of those jars will come down as they get more popular. I found Red Havens in Georgia at several U-Pick places, but they were ripe back in June. I wonder....Earlier this summer I made some ginger peach jam from some peaches with large patches of reddish flesh. The juice and the jam were a lovely rosy color. Didn't notice the variety at the time, but they were certainly delicious. Thanks again, everyone.

I have that hibiscus trained as a standard and it is a good ten feet tall. It has long branches, like a weeping willow. It doesn't get bushy. Maybe if I tried harder to keep it pruned it would, but I don't seem to get back to it enough. I have that aralia both in green and variegated, that I keep as bushes. I wasn't sure what they were, so thanks for the name. :o)

Buy some Persil or Ariel while in Europe. The Persil will be about 75-80% cheaper in Italy, than what you will pay for it in the USA. You can try Persil Sensitive/Sensitiv, if you do not like strong smells. Ariel is quite perfumated, but I like it.

Sensitive has a nice pleasant smell. Not too strong. I find regular Persil too strong for me.

We lived in Milan for four months and our absolute favorite Italian laundry item is their indoor clotheslines. Italians rarely have clothes dryers, instead they dry their clothes on items know as "stenditoios" - usually a set of six stainless steel tubes that hang from the ceiling and can be raised and lowered using a simple pulley system. You may consider this a bit quaint, but clothes dried quickly, without annoying line marks in them (because of the relatively large diameter of the tubes), and with the right amount of fabric softener were quite nice. You don't get that fluffy feeling from towels, but you'll save a ton of money on electricity. Stenditoios are something you would find at a hardware store, or a specialty home furnishings store. You can find them for sale in the US via the laundrylift.com website. We have one in our small NYC apartment (hanging over our bath tub). Works great!

Thanks all for the feedback - I'll be on the lookout for Persil Sensitive. Vaska Unscented and Sears detergent which has almost no scent is about all I can handle at the moment. Everything else makes me sneeze uncontrolably. And I'll check for any specifically Italian products as well to see if I find anything interesting.

ManhattanTransfer, I am very familiar with these pulley driers. They are very popular with apartment dwellers in Europe. My parents have one and I used to have them when I lived in Poland. And I agree - they are great. I considered getting one when we lived in a condo previously but now I have enough space for a standing one.

Hi Izeve,

- you won't find Persil here in Italy ... cause it is called DIXAN Click on the bottles to enter each powder/liquid scent .

- The Persil Sensitive equivalent

- Henkel gave up selling Megaperls on the italian market since the last millennium .

- Be aware that Dixan "Igiene & Purezza" (eucalyptus oil scented) either powder, liquid or concentrated liquid will make your laundry smell as if it had been washed with Vicks Vap-o-rub *LOL* .

- As for George, he' ll be available as long as he 'll give St. Peter John Malkovich the coffee maker

- This liquid detergent RIO BOLLEBLU is the only one containing oxygen bleach. Other ones don't, cause it breaks down enzymes. It's not very easy to find, but it's worth to look for it as it cleans well and leaves a nice clean scent

- Pril perfect gel (Somat) is probably the best dishwasher detergent available in Europe. IMHO it cleans far better than the finish quantum tabs
