Comments (36)@ livebetter....Thank you for your very detailed explanation of laundry enzymes! While no specific enzyme will "deodorize", as we all know, enzymes aid in the the cleaning process of many proteins and molecules! I work out regularly. I wear anti-perspirant and deodorant DAILY. I do not like to sweat or smell like sweat. Many under arm deos and anti-perspirants adhere to fabric. Without enzymes, laundry detergent cannot thorougly remove the deo and anti-perspirant from the fabric. In turn, the fabric still smells, hence what I like to consier deodorizing! Before I am attacked for not using a "green" deodorant or anti-perspirant...I have tried DOZENS. I hate them all. I do not like to feel wet, and I do not like to smell of underarm odor. If I am putting a hole in the ozone, or killing some baby seal somewhere because I choose to use "real" deodorant & anti-perspirant...well, life sucks sometimes!! :) I do my part for the Earth (solar panels, recycle everything I can, I own a "green" car, all appliances are efficient and new, etc... But, I draw the line with deodorant!! LOL...See MoreCleaning old smelly sheets
Comments (32)Hello. I worked for Fisheries and Oceans on the Trawl Fleet. I was head to toe in hydrolic grease, fish slime, guts, blood, fish oils, food stains especially cooking oil used way to much by cook. I would have several changes of cloths, stow dirty in my duffle bag until trip end about 2 weeks on average, the smell was overwhelming! As a group, my collegues and I stunk to high heaven, our cloths permanently stained and smelly after several washes of most of your suggestions here. Cloths were an expensive comodaty over time. We also tried soakind over nite in ammonia and cold water in garbage bucket outside, this worked much better, most stains including grease would dissolved away with longer and stronger soaks. Finally we hit on the very best, first time remedy...Pine Sol, the REAL origional stuff, in cold, then rewash with hot water if needed. It smells very pinesolly when washed but an air dry outside or a cling free sheet in drier, smell gone, all stains gone. We used about 3/4 c per load plus granular Tide in top loading washer. If really heavy stain of oils usually fishy grime, we would make paste of 1/3 pine sol with granular tide, work well into unwashed cloths stain, the granuals gave abrasive action as well as being a sufficant as it dissolved deeply with Pine sol into fibres. Pine Sol plus detergent or water softeners, are now the only washing method of most Fisheries officers and fishermen. It works that well and will work on your sheets too. Granular is cheaper and works better than newer liquid products for Tide in this case. You get just as many loads. If worried about soap residue in cold wash, dilute granuals in hot water in a small container then add to cold wash....See MoreShopping for Men...Grrrr!
Comments (11)Gayle: Mine also wears some pretty bad clothes (his gets stained at work, and when he cooks on the grill). His pant size of 31" x 32" is tough to find - at least in the right colors and style! He had 1 chipped front tooth for 3 months last year and I told him he could not come with me to my office Christmas party unless he got it fixed! Not to mention our then 17 year-old daughter told him he looked like a hobo. I just NEVER knew my hubby was a twin until I read your post!! And the final similarity....he (we) also have 4 kids!!! Kinda ironic, I thought! I feel your pain, and I did an intervention of sorts several months ago. It was mainly about how he was affecting the company cash flow. (only working 4-5 hour days, no client schmoozing, not caring, etc...). I mentioned that 4 haircuts per year was inadequate. Also let him know when you dress better you feel better, which reflects on how you perform at work, and how you are perceived. He agreed, I went out shopping and he even brought 10-12 of his shirts to the dry-cleaners! I prayed for tact, wisdom and the right words (we argue and have different opinions quite a bit so I was apprehensive to approach him but knew I needed to when #1 employee talked to me about problems at the office.) Anyway, sorry for the long response but the similarities were so uncanny I just had to share. Hopefully you will be able to be successful with your "talk" with your hubby, too!...See MoreSweat Problems, What Color Sheets Should I Buy
Comments (9)Mamapinky0, I really appreciate your response but unfortunately our situation is tricky at best. Cold water is the only option for our washing machine, we also don't have any other options than just regular wash (we live in a foreign country and have a foreign washing machine). We don't own the washer and can't replace it. Its a terrible washer that we hate but is something we can't do anything about. We can't move either (its just way to cost prohibitive and we only have a few more years left). And the dryer, its a combo with the washer and it does an even worse job of drying than it does washing. We do seem to have soft water though and I do have access to some American detergents thankfully. I use Tide Clean & Clear as I have sensitive skin that reacts to fragrances. I also have been adding Oxyclean (the fragrance free kind). I'm pretty sure I'm just going to have to live with masking the stains....See Morebluesbarby
