New Camera and breakfast photo.

My old Kodak has definitely seen better days. The battery door was cracked and I'd periodically have to take the batteries out, then put them back in to make the camera work, LOL, but it sure served me well for several years. Plus, it was EASY!

Elery decided I needed a "good" camera to take pictures of food (grin) and of our wedding and our parties and travels, so he surprised me with a Canon Elph. Boy, is there a learning curve. Sigh.

Anyway, it has taken me all day to take a picture, review it, load it on the computer into my picture folder, get it into photobucket and then here.

Anyway, here's breakfast. I was out of milk, so I mixed an egg with some homemade yogurt, dunked in a couple of slices of slightly stale sourdough and voila, I had french toast. I don't really like sweet with french toast, I'd rather have savory, so I had it plain, with a nice cup of Kona coffee.

So, what's for breakfast?

I'm a bit puzzled as to why this 2 1/2 year old thread has popped up again, but I do appreciate all the photography expertise that everyone has shared. PM2, there's a second thread that came after this one if you'd like more info, linked below. I ended up getting a Nikon Coolpix P600 which has a 60x zoom (a bit longer than the 50x Cannon which I also checked out) which I like for long shots of critters in the field. I followed Jane's advice to go and hold a bunch of cameras and try them out, and found both the Canon and the Nikon comfortable, though the Nikon is a bit larger. The Nikon is also slower processing images to get ready for another shot than the Cannon, I think. I am still just beginning to learn to use it, largely using it on the standard landscape setting, though I have started checking out the different options and menus. I most often use it to take photos of critters and scenes we've spotted when we were inside since that's where it's easily available, though I also take it with me when I am going outside specifically to take photos. As Steve said above, "I also use my iPhone a lot because it's in my pocket, and it is often said that the best camera is the one you have with you." It doesn't do a great job on distance or small birds, but it has good color and is great to keep in my pocket to catch some of the surprises I see in the garden. I also use it for many of my landscape shots since it's with me and available when I'm working outside. The few times I've taken the Nikon out while I work in the garden, I've either lost track of where I've set it down, or found it in the way, so I usually just stuff the phone in my pocket when I am doing more than wandering around taking photos. In the birds and mobile features #12 thread, I've posted photos taken with both cameras: Sat, Nov 22, 14 at 9:05 - iPhone Sat, Nov 22, 14 at 9:19 - Nikon Dec 3, 14 at 18:04 - Nikon Thu, Dec 4, 14 at 7:59 - Nikon In the summer, more of the photos were phone photos since I was more likely to be out working during warm weather. Here is a link that might be useful: the second camera question thread

Pretty sure I don't have voice recording. My one camera, is a Canon A650IS which is a couple of years old. Its been described in reviews as a Canon G7 minus frills. I like the 12 megapixels in it, and size. 6 x zoom. Lately, I use a Canon SX10 IS, with 20 x zoom. Also no voice recording. Would be a nifty feature though. The most important part for me seems to know when I left one grove and am in another. What I do sometimes, is take an image of my palm in-between to indicate the transition, or a note on a note card. But I can see where the voice option would be very streamlined. Seems like most manufacturers have really worked the bugs out of most cameras these days.

I have the older Canon S2 IS and found that it tended to burn out highlight using the default "auto" settings. I got improved results by moving the ASA from 80 to 100, and reducing exposure by 1/3 F stop. There are settings in the menus for this. However, in my camera, these settins are not adjustable in the "auto" mode; The mode setting must be turned to "p" (program) and then the ASA and exposure can be adjusted. These adjustments will stay until changed again. The adjustments will stay even when the camera is turned off, and then on later. Just remember to set the mode dial to "P" to use the adjusted settings. I have an older Nikon 2 Mega-pixel camera and frankly, its sensor is sharper and the colors are more crisp. The reduced pixel count does show at enlargements beyond 5" X 7". There were many other things wrong with the old Nikon, one being a battery eater. The Canon IS cameras have a lot of good features for the money and their processor is speedy, but it seems that the sensors need improving. The larger sensor in the larger Canons and Nikons are much better, but of course, these require bigger and more expensive lenses to cover the sensor area and the zoom range and aperature at full zoom can not match the Canon IS series. [In this discussion, sensor size is not refering to the number of pixels squeezed out of the sensor, but the the actual physical size. Sharper images are possible with physically larger sensors.]

Caudex1, Sure can, we went to a retail store and looked at both Nikon D80 and Canon 40D, seriously considering either one. We have 2 other Canon cameras so my DH was leaning more towards that one. I was leaning more towards the Nikon as my sister has one and I knew she gets great photos from it. Like I said the Canon was heavier and a little bigger, it had more menu options on the dial, not sure what they all were. We took photos from both and through the lcd screen, the Nikon looked like it captured the truer colors. My hair was a little yellower with the Canon, my hair is not that yellow. They let us print out a sample from each camera. The Nikon, the colors were more true and the sharpeness was better, more of the photo seemed in focus. The Canon, I liked my face colorings a little better(not so red) but my hair was yellower and the surroundings were not as sharp as with the Nikon. The Canon had an image stablizer but the Nikon did not. Also the Nikon was $ 300.00 cheaper.

The nice thing about Elery is that he really thinks about gifts which you can enjoy and use. I'm just imagining all the great pictures you can take of Makayla and Bud.

The French toast is gorgeous, especially the thick generous slices.

Annie:
What model number is the Canon ?

I can't lie to you. It's a good picture but!!!
it would have been better, if the light was more forward,
than in the back, left side.
It caused a reflection. Just some corrective critisism.
Don't get upset.

My Photo's aren't that good, because I haven't learned to use the Camera yet.
I know what to do but don't know how, yet.
One day I'll read the book. Guess I'm used to the 35 mm , I just winged it, with that.

Oh Annie, me too!!

I have the Elph and it's wonderful!! Still shots, movies, fabulous! Arthur bought me the Canon SD870IS Digital Elph before Hannah's b'day party. It is a honey! I love it.

It's easy to learn, just play with it. Auto gives great photos. Tip: for outdoors, set WB (white balance) to cloudy; you will eliminate that blue tint that most camera give on auto white balance.

Enjoy it. Nice gift, Elery

What a coinkydink.. I have an absolutely ancient Kodak digital camera, it has to be 10 years old and it's recently started acting up. It's doing crazy things with the battery, I also have to pop open the door sometimes to shut it off etc. Then it wouldn't let me download my pictures direct to the computer, I had to put the card into the printer instead, now it's not letting me do that half the time. You used to be able to go onto the Kodak website and download the cameras software but the don't support my model anymore the DC210 Plus so I'm reluctantly in the market for a new one and I don't know what to get, there's thousands of them availabe at Best Buy etc. I don't know whether to go cheap and just get a simple one but then I kind of want one that has a big 10x zoom on it so things look closer on the picture like they are in real life. My camera makes stuff in the background look so far away.

Could have just said " Good Photo Annie, Good Luck "

I didn't know that was the Model name, of your Camera.
Thought it might be the same as mine, which is
a Canon Power Shot A 360. It does a lot of tricks
But I haven't had time to figure things out yet.

Your breakfast looks great and congrats on the camera. I bought my first digital when 3 1/2 yr. old DGS was born, the best one Walmart had if that tells you anything. Before 1 yr. old DGS2 was born I bought a good digital (and still don't know all it does.) I have a good 35mm that I bought when DS was born (29 yrs. ago) and it bit the dust about a year ago. I still have it and would love to get it fixed because I can run it and know what it does, kindof!

I bought a new camcorder about the same time I bought the new digital camera. I just hope I have time soon to learn to download it. I have birthdays, holidays and three cruise vacations on it. I think I used to be a little electronic savvy? I just don't have the time to learn these things now (that sounds good doesn't it?)

Look forward to your pictures and what a sweet gift!

Trixie, I've never been electronic savvy, LOL, I hate 'em. Computers are tools, not toys, and I learn just enough to make them do what I want and no more. Same with cameras, camcorders, DVD players, whatever. I want to mess with them as little as possible. And, when I went to California, I took a lot of pictures with my 35MM Canon because it takes way better pictures than most anything I've ever taken with a digital. Too bad I have to pay to have them developed before I get to see how many good ones there are.

This camera is a Canon Elph SD1000, and it'll take movies with sound, has that digital macro, lots of things I'll never figure out how to use. It took me hours to take that one picture and get it onto the computer, then here. LOL We'll see if I remember how I did it tomorrow.

Lou, my kitchen lighting is not negotiable. I have a big sliding patio door on the south side of the house, and several 4 foot tall windows on that same side. The sun was shining and when it does, the kitchen is bright. My overhead lights are flourescent, and they make colors "wash out" anyway, or they turn everything blue. So that picture was taken 4 times, from 4 different directions. All the kitchen lights were off, it was natural light only. And that was the BEST one out of the four. The ones taken with the overhead lighting on had so much glare that you couldn't see what the heck was in the picture.

Ah well, it was my first picture with the camera, so it'll probably get better. Or worse. Who knows? I guess I could take pictures of my breakfast in the bathroom, that has one small window and it's on the north, LOL. So, if you see pictures of cookies in my bathtub or breakfast on the toilet seat, you'll know why. It's Lou's fault.

LindaC, Elery does have a brother, but he's younger and he's on marriage #5. Of course, that DOES mean that he's the marrying kind. LOL

First a copper bowl, then a cookbook, then a food processor, an engagement ring, and now a camera ... if I didn't know any better I'd think Elery was vying for your attention.

Btw, I like French Toast, and that Canon shot is -almost- as good as the real thing.

Annie, great photo. And you like your French Toast the same way that I do. While Moe and Matt have theirs swimming in maple syrup, I have mine with just salt, pepper and butter.

How nice that Elery got you a new camera in time for the wedding.

You didn't have to splain. Just learn how to switch the camera to different lighting.
Incandecent , Natural, Etc. When you learn , tell me .
Or maybe ?
Sol : can tell me.

I feel the same about Electronic things as Annie.
I've used a 35MM since the forties.
I only bought a computer to do EBAY. I didn't even know how to turn it on.

But!!! If I didn't get a Computer, I woudn't have met all you nice people.

Great pic Annie! I'm sure you are going to love that camera.

I tried to learn how to use all the options on mine but either becasue of incompetence or lack of real interest I never moved past "Auto" with "Flash Off" and the occasional use of "Flower" for close up detail...ie food and flowers. I also use "Portrait" for people pictures...if I think to change the setting....big if! LOL

Well geez, Lou, that was the first picture and I've had the camera for what? Three days? Give me a chance to read the instructions. (grin)

Eh, never mind, THAT will never work. I read the instructions, tried to follow them and STILL can't even find a way to change the camera settings to different lighting options.

I actually love the lighting, Annie. I mighta thrown a cheap piece of plastic styrofoam in front of the french toast to bounce just a tad more light in the front but I love backlighting on food photos with that blown out background and those nice reflections. It's a style you'll see in magazines and I think ya done real good there, girl. Your breakfast looks really tasty as well though I'm the type that would throw it in a pool of maple syrup.

Diana, have I mentioned that I just love you?

Sol, I think he HAS my attention. LOL He may be sorry for that later. (grin)

Chase, let me come sit by you. There are things on this camera that I can't even figure out what the settings are FOR. I did figure out how to make pictures black and white instead of color, but there's a "color swap" setting that I can't figure out no matter what I do. And why would I want to swap colors anyway?

Heck, it took me 2 hours to figure out that this camera has a switch on the front (back?) that lets me review pictures, I couldn't figure out how the heck to see what I'd taken!

Ah well, I'll play with it some more tonight when I make whatever I decide to make from Ann T's dessert cookbook.
