New Camera and breakfast photo.

My old Kodak has definitely seen better days. The battery door was cracked and I'd periodically have to take the batteries out, then put them back in to make the camera work, LOL, but it sure served me well for several years. Plus, it was EASY!

Elery decided I needed a "good" camera to take pictures of food (grin) and of our wedding and our parties and travels, so he surprised me with a Canon Elph. Boy, is there a learning curve. Sigh.

Anyway, it has taken me all day to take a picture, review it, load it on the computer into my picture folder, get it into photobucket and then here.

Anyway, here's breakfast. I was out of milk, so I mixed an egg with some homemade yogurt, dunked in a couple of slices of slightly stale sourdough and voila, I had french toast. I don't really like sweet with french toast, I'd rather have savory, so I had it plain, with a nice cup of Kona coffee.

So, what's for breakfast?

Thank-you everyone. I've sometimes wondered if anyone was paying attention, but your response is moving. I'm still getting a feel for it, but the XSi seems to be accurate for color capture. Strangely enough the color seems off to me on the lcd, but looks good on the pc. Some still don't seem perfect (such as 'Swingtown'). I don't know why I thought it would be a miracle device, but the color accuracy does seem better than my Panasonic. However that sounds, I'm not disappointed so far (and yes I have already been pricing lenses (even with $20 to my name)). :) These were taken in the late afternoon (practically evening) with the WB set to sun, but I don't have enough of a feel for it to know if I should have used a different setting. I'll be sure to let you know how my opinion progresses once the excitement has worn off a little. Again, thank-you. Brock P.S. Is the new size alright? I decided to try going to 600 pixels for the maximum dimension, now that I have more pixels to work with. P.P.S. I managed to take 697 photos on the first charge with this new battery. It supposedly lasts 1.5X longer than the XTi's battery. That's almost 700 photos, using live view for alot of them, and while learning the menu setup all on one charge! I can't believe how much fun this is.

I think these pictures are more appealing also. (I can feel the softness of the petals) I notice it's a Canon SX50 HS and if I recall your old one was Canon SX100 IS ?? Are they part of the same series? I am unhappy with the image stabilization Sony pocket one I have. It seems the photos have no "heart". Which I do see in your photos above. I wonder (with mine) if the image stabilization is to blame for a less than appealing image. Wish my old Olympus hadn't died :-(

Pretty sure I don't have voice recording. My one camera, is a Canon A650IS which is a couple of years old. Its been described in reviews as a Canon G7 minus frills. I like the 12 megapixels in it, and size. 6 x zoom. Lately, I use a Canon SX10 IS, with 20 x zoom. Also no voice recording. Would be a nifty feature though. The most important part for me seems to know when I left one grove and am in another. What I do sometimes, is take an image of my palm in-between to indicate the transition, or a note on a note card. But I can see where the voice option would be very streamlined. Seems like most manufacturers have really worked the bugs out of most cameras these days.

Thanks for your explanation, as for me, I need to get immersed in some of the finer points of camerology I've been procrastinating about because they are complicated. Auto focus in low light is probably the problem; it is a problem with lots of models, or it could be something else. And you can always try to manually focus, but it's tricky if you don't have a special ring, tricky anyway, but some people have a great eye for it. Before you give up on the wonders of being able to take some shots without a flash (sometimes it's just better to use it), you might try holding a flashlight or laser pen just long enough to focus but turn it off before you press the shutter. Maybe also check your manual to see if the camera has a focus assist beam, probably not. Yesterday of all things I photographed an amateur (customer-participation) fashion show with mixed results. But one of the neat things was it was well lit in there, my flash failed and I didn't know it right away. Some shots I did not want to use the flash on anyway because it would not reach far enough to do any good. I got a few really nice shots even if some were duds, think I used ISO 800 but then bumped it up to 1600 which was bad because that's when noise kicks in on mine. But maybe I needed the 1600 for a couple of them, can't remember. The bottom line is that if you can crank up the ISO and can manage to focus, you can get a photo you could never get otherwise, even if it's a little noisy, it's better than no photo unless you can't achieve focus. It works great at dusk, too. Another trick to focus is to point at something brighter and half press, but it should be the same distance or you may get what you want in focus blurred. While you are half pressing, reframe the shot and press all the way. I do that all the time in normal light even to get just what I want in focus. Somebody suggested to focus on the eyes so I do. I'm just sharing some things I learned the hard way and by reading a lot, and if you knew some of this, please forgive me. I can't zoom up as close as you can with what I'm now using nor can I get good macro shots, so if you can get the hang of it, you will be able to get some great photos. I'll bet that camera takes nice macros. Watch for camera shake, if you get too close, you may need a tripod.

The nice thing about Elery is that he really thinks about gifts which you can enjoy and use. I'm just imagining all the great pictures you can take of Makayla and Bud.

The French toast is gorgeous, especially the thick generous slices.

I can't lie to you. It's a good picture but!!!
it would have been better, if the light was more forward,
than in the back, left side.
It caused a reflection. Just some corrective critisism.
Don't get upset.

My Photo's aren't that good, because I haven't learned to use the Camera yet.
I know what to do but don't know how, yet.
One day I'll read the book. Guess I'm used to the 35 mm , I just winged it, with that.

Oh Annie, me too!!

I have the Elph and it's wonderful!! Still shots, movies, fabulous! Arthur bought me the Canon SD870IS Digital Elph before Hannah's b'day party. It is a honey! I love it.

It's easy to learn, just play with it. Auto gives great photos. Tip: for outdoors, set WB (white balance) to cloudy; you will eliminate that blue tint that most camera give on auto white balance.

Congrats on the new camera Annie! Breakfast looks good too. I still don't know how to use all the settings on my camera. I've tried to read the manual and understand it all but I can't sit still that long not to mention it boggles my mind.

I use auto and video..LOL it comes with alot more..

What a coinkydink.. I have an absolutely ancient Kodak digital camera, it has to be 10 years old and it's recently started acting up. It's doing crazy things with the battery, I also have to pop open the door sometimes to shut it off etc. Then it wouldn't let me download my pictures direct to the computer, I had to put the card into the printer instead, now it's not letting me do that half the time. You used to be able to go onto the Kodak website and download the cameras software but the don't support my model anymore the DC210 Plus so I'm reluctantly in the market for a new one and I don't know what to get, there's thousands of them availabe at Best Buy etc. I don't know whether to go cheap and just get a simple one but then I kind of want one that has a big 10x zoom on it so things look closer on the picture like they are in real life. My camera makes stuff in the background look so far away.

Your breakfast looks great and congrats on the camera. I bought my first digital when 3 1/2 yr. old DGS was born, the best one Walmart had if that tells you anything.Before 1 yr. old DGS2 was born I bought a good digital (and still don't know all it does.) I have a good 35mm that I bought when DS was born (29 yrs. ago) and it bit the dust about a year ago. I still have it and would love to get it fixed because I can run it and know what it does, kindof!

I bought a new camcorder about the same time I bought the new digital camera. I just hope I have time soon to learn to download it. I have birthdays, holidays and three cruise vacations on it. I think I used to be a little electronic savvy? I just don't have the time to learn these things now (that sounds good doesn't it?)

Trixie, I've never been electronic savvy, LOL, I hate 'em. Computers are tools, not toys, and I learn just enough to make them do what I want and no more. Same with cameras, camcorders, DVD players, whatever. I want to mess with them as little as possible. And, when I went to California, I took a lot of pictures with my 35MM Canon because it takes way better pictures than most anything I've ever taken with a digital. Too bad I have to pay to have them developed before I get to see how many good ones there are.

This camera is a Canon Elph SD1000, and it'll take movies with sound, has that digital macro, lots of things I'll never figure out how to use. It took me hours to take that one picture and get it onto the computer, then here. LOL We'll see if I remember how I did it tomorrow.

Lou, my kitchen lighting is not negotiable. I have a big sliding patio door on the south side of the house, and several 4 foot tall windows on that same side. The sun was shining and when it does, the kitchen is bright. My overhead lights are flourescent, and they make colors "wash out" anyway, or they turn everything blue. So that picture was taken 4 times, from 4 different directions. All the kitchen lights were off, it was natural light only. And that was the BEST one out of the four. The ones taken with the overhead lighting on had so much glare that you couldn't see what the heck was in the picture.

Ah well, it was my first picture with the camera, so it'll probably get better. Or worse. Who knows? I guess I could take pictures of my breakfast in the bathroom, that has one small window and it's on the north, LOL. So, if you see pictures of cookies in my bathtub or breakfast on the toilet seat, you'll know why. It's Lou's fault.

LindaC, Elery does have a brother, but he's younger and he's on marriage #5. Of course, that DOES mean that he's the marrying kind. LOL

Btw, I like French Toast, and that Canon shot is -almost- as good as the real thing.

Annie, great photo. And you like your French Toast the same way that I do. While Moe and Matt have theirs swimming in maple syrup, I have mine with just salt, pepper and butter.

How nice that Elery got you a new camera in time for the wedding.

I've used a 35MM since the forties.
I only bought a computer to do EBAY. I didn't even know how to turn it on.

Great pic Annie! I'm sure you are going to love that camera.

I tried to learn how to use all the options on mine but either becasue of incompetence or lack of real interest I never moved past "Auto" with "Flash Off" and the occasional use of "Flower" for close up detail...ie food and flowers. I also use "Portrait" for people pictures...if I think to change the setting....big if! LOL

Well geez, Lou, that was the first picture and I've had the camera for what? Three days? Give me a chance to read the instructions. (grin)

Eh, never mind, THAT will never work. I read the instructions, tried to follow them and STILL can't even find a way to change the camera settings to different lighting options.

I actually love the lighting, Annie. I mighta thrown a cheap piece of plastic styrofoam in front of the french toast to bounce just a tad more light in the front but I love backlighting on food photos with that blown out background and those nice reflections. It's a style you'll see in magazines and I think ya done real good there, girl. Your breakfast looks really tasty as well though I'm the type that would throw it in a pool of maple syrup.

Chase, let me come sit by you. There are things on this camera that I can't even figure out what the settings are FOR. I did figure out how to make pictures black and white instead of color, but there's a "color swap" setting that I can't figure out no matter what I do. And why would I want to swap colors anyway?

Heck, it took me 2 hours to figure out that this camera has a switch on the front (back?) that lets me review pictures, I couldn't figure out how the heck to see what I'd taken!

Ah well, I'll play with it some more tonight when I make whatever I decide to make from Ann T's dessert cookbook.

Annie, the SD1000 is the newest model, right? I didn't want to wait a few weeks so I caved for the SD870. I love the wide angle on the Elph.
