But I have to disagree with the "good models" claim.

MY cat avoids cameras like the plague... she is always moving just when I get a good shot. Or is it just me she is avoiding? ;)

I subscribe to a sign at saw in front of a veterinarian's office once: Dogs have owners, cats have staff. :)

Can you go into a little more depth about the differences between the D80 and 40D?

Sure can, we went to a retail store and looked at both Nikon D80 and Canon 40D, seriously considering either one. We have 2 other Canon cameras so my DH was leaning more towards that one. I was leaning more towards the Nikon as my sister has one and I knew she gets great photos from it. Like I said the Canon was heavier and a little bigger, it had more menu options on the dial, not sure what they all were. We took photos from both and through the lcd screen, the Nikon looked like it captured the truer colors. My hair was a little yellower with the Canon, my hair is not that yellow. They let us print out a sample from each camera. The Nikon, the colors were more true and the sharpeness was better, more of the photo seemed in focus. The Canon, I liked my face colorings a little better(not so red) but my hair was yellower and the surroundings were not as sharp as with the Nikon. The Canon had an image stablizer but the Nikon did not. Also the Nikon was $ 300.00 cheaper.

How true about cats, we have 4 cats and most of them are not camera shy but I do have one that hates her photo taken, she lays there and meows when I am taking her photo til I quit. Luckily the other 3 pose for me.

Since I have Canon glass and a 20D I'll be upgrading to the 40D, but it was great to hear your opinions on the two.

Caudex1, I am sure the Canon 40D is a great camera, if it had not been a little bit heavier than the Nikon, we might have gotten the Canon 40D, as we have 2 other Canons cameras that we could have interchanged lenses with. I was worried about my wrist handling the heavier Canon in comparison to the Nikon. Will you be getting it soon?

If all goes as planned I'll get the 40D by the end of the year.

Some are easier to shot than others, Pedro(found him as a kitten at a Mexican restaurant)didn't even mind me placing the hat on his head.

Love those cat pictures. The yellow one looks like our Murphy when she was younger and the gray one looks like my sweet Big Baby of years ago. I really miss her.

Great beginners kit! It's a bit much for a newbie but you'll grow into and it will keep from wanting to upgrade sooner. As your skill improves you can expand the capabilities of the camera with various lenses at you disposal.

40D will be here today!!!!body only since I have too many lenses already ;0)
