New Camera - New Photos

I just got the new Canon XSi yesterday and thought I would share some of the photos I took in the garden. If you've been following the story, you know I've wanted a new camera for a long, long, long time. I'm more excited about it than you can imagine!

I missed our show by exactly one day, but I am far from complaining. My Mother helped me hugely in the purchase of this camera and I am incredibly grateful.

I'm still getting used to the feel and settings (used a dslr (someone else's - 3 or 4 shots) for the first time on Saturday), but I was still really impressed. It's feels so good to be limited by my own abilities and not my camera's anymore. I'll share more when I have time, but you can view what I've uploaded from yesterday here.

Lovely photos of lovely irises. I ordered Blue Fin this year and am glad I did.

Thanks so much, all of you. And Carol and Niecey, a belated Happy Canada Day to you both! I am having a lot of fun with this camera; I actually had nothing to do with how any of the photos turned out - I just pressed the button, sometimes holding it down, and sometimes not. I was lucky, they just turned out well! So, Iris gal, the crocus rose shot was an accident, but a very pretty one. Carla, my dear sister-in-law bought a new (very expensive) camera, and kindly gave me her old one, a Kodak DX 4330. I am thrilled with the photos it takes, and it seems very simple to use (which is VERY important for me). Since there is no instruction book, I have to check out some of the Kodak Tutorials to get the most out of it. Mark, I also LOVE Tamora's blooms, but I have to say, I'm am not crazy about the fragrance, so I just don't get too close LOL Jean, we'd love to see pictures of your Evelyn too - she sure is a beauty. Pretty sure I don't have voice recording. My one camera, is a Canon A650IS which is a couple of years old. Its been described in reviews as a Canon G7 minus frills. I like the 12 megapixels in it, and size. 6 x zoom. Lately, I use a Canon SX10 IS, with 20 x zoom. Also no voice recording. Would be a nifty feature though. The most important part for me seems to know when I left one grove and am in another. What I do sometimes, is take an image of my palm in-between to indicate the transition, or a note on a note card. But I can see where the voice option would be very streamlined. Seems like most manufacturers have really worked the bugs out of most cameras these days.

Caudex1, Sure can, we went to a retail store and looked at both Nikon D80 and Canon 40D, seriously considering either one. We have 2 other Canon cameras so my DH was leaning more towards that one. I was leaning more towards the Nikon as my sister has one and I knew she gets great photos from it. Like I said the Canon was heavier and a little bigger, it had more menu options on the dial, not sure what they all were. We took photos from both and through the lcd screen, the Nikon looked like it captured the truer colors. My hair was a little yellower with the Canon, my hair is not that yellow. They let us print out a sample from each camera. The Nikon, the colors were more true and the sharpeness was better, more of the photo seemed in focus. The Canon, I liked my face colorings a little better(not so red) but my hair was yellower and the surroundings were not as sharp as with the Nikon. The Canon had an image stablizer but the Nikon did not. Also the Nikon was $ 300.00 cheaper.

My computer was hit by lightning. I took it to a repair place and they said they could not fix it. The insurance company gave me a new computer. I gave the old one to a friend's teenage son. He got the computer up and running and sent me a disk of my precious pictures! I save some to photobucket , but i was pleased he could get the other ones. So if your computer crashes - don't give up on getting photos out. Take it to someone who can. Hubby got a new camera for Christmas and the first thing I did was take a photo of an address label. I just hope an honest person would find it.

I'm thrilled you got the XSi - I can see it's doing an excellent job.

I thought you did a great job with your Panasonic also.

Do you notice color capture differences?

I've sometimes wondered if anyone was paying attention, but your response is moving.

I'm still getting a feel for it, but the XSi seems to be accurate for color capture. Strangely enough the color seems off to me on the lcd, but looks good on the pc. Some still don't seem perfect (such as 'Swingtown'). I don't know why I thought it would be a miracle device, but the color accuracy does seem better than my Panasonic. However that sounds, I'm not disappointed so far (and yes I have already been pricing lenses (even with $20 to my name)). :)

These were taken in the late afternoon (practically evening) with the WB set to sun, but I don't have enough of a feel for it to know if I should have used a different setting.

I'll be sure to let you know how my opinion progresses once the excitement has worn off a little.

P.S. Is the new size alright? I decided to try going to 600 pixels for the maximum dimension, now that I have more pixels to work with.

P.P.S. I managed to take 697 photos on the first charge with this new battery. It supposedly lasts 1.5X longer than the XTi's battery. That's almost 700 photos, using live view for alot of them, and while learning the menu setup all on one charge! I can't believe how much fun this is.
