Did you go to Summer Camp?

The only Summer Camp I was allowed to go to was Church Camp. It lasted a whole week with 1 hour of church in the morning and 1 hour of church in the afternoon. Time out for one hour of Swimming and Arts and Crafts.

We also, had sing-a-longs at night. Then we retreated back to the Dorms and then the dreaded "lights out".

My kids always wanted to go to Camp, but as a single Mom, I couldn't afford it. They refused to go to Church Camp, which was a lot cheaper. They did go to Day Camp at the Y, which they loved.

I never did but my DD loves to go to camp. She went to YMCA camp a couple of years and then there is another camp not too far from where we live that she really likes. I think she's old enough to be a counselor now but I don't know if she's interested in that.

No summer camp for me. I remember going to Girl Scout camp once, my Mom was a leader...but I honestly think we came home that night instead of staying in the cabins. My Mom was not much of a camper.

My DD has went to lots of week long Girl Scout camps. The last 2 years she has been a leader and helped with the younger girls. She loves it, so much in fact that she just became a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts.

PJ good for you! I won a prize for archery too! But it was my 2nd year trying it - I remember that like I remember beginning this sentence...no really. I remember because my first year, I had absolutely the lowest score of all the boys, and I cried like a baby. The next year, I must have had a counselor who was a better coach. Or maybe God just gave me a steadier hand a year later, because I practically split the rear ends of my earlier arrows shot into the bull's eye with my later shots! (My big disappointment that 2nd year was looking and looking around among the boys, and not seeing another one crying like I did the year before! I knew there were a few that 2nd year who shot as poorly or worse than I did my 1st year. So I was mad that they either didn't care as much as I did, or they were better at hiding their pain. Those are the sorts of things that go through boys' minds, that cause them to grow while at camp.) Of course I was totally kidding around about camps not being for girls. But still! A "love smitten teenage boy trailing after you (instructor)"??!!! That's STALKING! I wouldn't send my girl to camp to learn how to handle THAT. Not even if I knew that boy and his parents beforehand and we had pre-arranged for him and my daughter to marry! I'd make sure she was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do before we sent her there. And I'd insist that she sleep wearing night vision goggles and a Bowie knife or a Taser (or two) strapped on. The only thing I can say, PJ, if you're gonna tell DW on me, is, she knows it ain't gonna do no good to make me sleep out in the heat, because I AM THE HEAT! I AM THE DEVIL, HAHAAAAAAAA!!!

Hey ladies....wow! Time flies. Y'all already know what I'm gonna have to say! Busy Busy! ha Was sick over the weekend so I'm still painting walls. One more coat with the roller and I'm done with the living room and hall and then it's on to the bathrooms! Boy does the trim and cutting in take a lot of time. Ugh!! I had forgotten. Thought I could whip it out really quickly. Need to get it finished up today. We are gearing up for DD's birthday party Friday night. DH got the fire pit done yesterday (how many years have I been talking about getting that done Luvs??). ha It looks really nice. We'll have a table set up out by that for making s'mores. Got the menu all planned out, the music ready and will do the decorating tomorrow. We are haunting up the garage and having the party outdoors this year. Borrowing some heaters from our neighbor. Hope it will be nice for her. Have to run to the TS today to find a couple more candelabra. Lots of work these kids are! ha I hope they appreciate it. The kids are off 1/2 day today and then no school tomorrow and Friday. DS has a scout campout Friday night that I have to get him ready for too. Other DS has a big report due on Monday that he's not done much on which mom will have to help him finish up. Sooooo you know I have no time left for my painting projects and I have so many piling up that I want to get done. Probably going to a friends house for Thanksgiving so want to paint up something cute for them and since I'm told there is only 72 more shopping days until Christmas (YIKES) I also need to get started on some gifts. Gets my adrenaline pumping just thinking about it all. ha I'd better get going. Just crammed down my breakfast and need to hit the road. Y'all have a wonderful day and week if I don't get back here. Like any job, there should be specific reasons for why she wants to work there. During my college years, I worked at a residential camp for the physically challenged. So, a camp environment, but with a population I was interested in learning more about. Yes, the day is a long one with probably one day off a week. Often these camps attract foreign students from around the world. This too makes for an interesting experience. I agree with Joanie. There are many opportunities that can also tie into her interests as well as give her new skills. Both my daughters worked in summer camps. One taught gymnastics, one worked at a Girl Scout camp. What is your daughter's rational for working at a summer camp?

Thank you all for your kind words. And Mtn- loved the article. Oddly, I am not really sad for DS. He will be fine, he is the one of the most resilient and innerly strong people I know. He will miss some of his co-counselors very much but they face time already with some frequency and now they are making plans to meet up for a camping trip late this summer(which will hopefully work out). I am sad for all the kids that wont get to go to camp this summer, for whom the camp is their sanctuary, their refuge. And you all expressed eloquently, just how important places, like camp are to our sense of security in the world. It's another broken tradition, another normal routine crushed. So I am sad, and I am angry. I will say it's kind of hard to be angry at a virus. And, I can and will move on to accept this one more loss. This week also saw the postponement of my niece's wedding. She postponed to late August- honestly I dont know if I will be ready to put my family on a cross country flight then.

We moved from the city to the suburbs the summer after I finished fifth grade. Our parents put me and one sister in Day Camp. I remember it was lots of fun-stories,crafts, some sports, lunch, swimming lessons. I made some good friends but when camp ended I no longer saw them. The Day Camp was for the entire town, four elementary schools. When school started, I didn't know anyone.

I went to church camp that sounds familiar to yours - I loved it. I don't think I would have ever wanted to go to any other kind because I wouldn't have known anyone there.

I went to Camp Fire Girl Camp when I was seven and cried for the entire week. Years later my mom told me she felt badly when she saw my sad little face coming through the locks (we were in a boat,) when my parents came to pick me up. Guess I was too young and too much of a mama's girl for camp at that time.

As children we were sent to a Catholic camp, Camp Villa Marie in Savannah, Ga. on the river. My mother thought we needed this because there were no Catholic schools in south Georgia. Gayle, we also had mass at the crack of dawn and again at night. Also, religious classes twice a day. No, it wasn't fun. We stayed in cabins with huge screen windows, no air. The nuns would walk around at night to make sure we were all in beds. Seeing them in those black and white habits late at night looking through those screens, still gives me nightmares. DD2 begged to go to a camp with horse back riding. So we gave in and sent her to Merry Mac in Black Mountain, NC. It was not cheap! She wrote letters begging to come home after 3 days. After talking to the camp owners, we drove the 7 hours and got her. That was her first and last camp experience.

I didn't go to camp until I was a Girl Scout leader, and I had more fun than the girls!

I went to church camp too. Sounds like yours Gayle. I went twice I think it was. I sent my daughters too, at least for 1 year (that I remember). This past summer, I helped my DGD go. Hopefully she'll want to go this summer again.
