Co. camping with bears and kids??
Comments (5)I know that it is way to late. Wonder how they made out?? Any whos.. Putting any type of food stuff in coolers and then in your car, truck, tent or camper is a big mistake. Store it outside in a place away from your camp. Hang it in a tree? Yea that works until they get mad and then go after the first thing that makes them madder than they already are. Which is usally the person screaming at them to go away. Bear have a sense of smell that you can not even begin to imagine. They are able to smell food even through a tin can. If they are hungery and smell food. They are going to get it regardless of what is in there way. So if you want your car, truck, tent or camper ripped to shreds. Just put food in them where hungery bears are found to roam. I live in an area where Black bear live. You learn to respect them when you are within their range. People that make their living in the woods here such as oil and gas field workers never leave their lunch in a truck or piece of equipment such as a dozer. Over the years bears have destoried many trucks and the inside of heavy equipment hunting food. Even when the equipment was left running. Burning your trash, such as tin cans or meat wrappers does not help. For a fire can be smelled for miles by bears and the scent of what ever you may be burning is carried with it. Which brings them into your camp. If you have trash. Put it in a strong trash bag and leave it somewhere away from camp. For when bears grab a bag they will run with it into the woods. Let them go if that happens. It's just trash. Same with coolers or food bags. It is just food and you can get more. Try to stop a hungery bear and you may end up just counting stiches if you are lucky....See MoreDid you go to Summer Camp?
Comments (8)As children we were sent to a Catholic camp, Camp Villa Marie in Savannah, Ga. on the river. My mother thought we needed this because there were no Catholic schools in south Georgia. Gayle, we also had mass at the crack of dawn and again at night. Also, religious classes twice a day. No, it wasn't fun. We stayed in cabins with huge screen windows, no air. The nuns would walk around at night to make sure we were all in beds. Seeing them in those black and white habits late at night looking through those screens, still gives me nightmares. DD2 begged to go to a camp with horse back riding. So we gave in and sent her to Merry Mac in Black Mountain, NC. It was not cheap! She wrote letters begging to come home after 3 days. After talking to the camp owners, we drove the 7 hours and got her. That was her first and last camp experience....See MoreAre you working on any interior projects this summer?
Comments (19)I have a couple of things that I'd like to get started on, but that are kind of stuck - partly due to indecision. It doesn't help that I've got almost 4 straight weeks of business trip this summer. Our carpets really need replacing. We put the current ones in when we moved into the house in 1985 so they have held up quite well, but the are getting to really need it. One thing we are stuck on is whether to replace them all with carpet or whether to put hardwood down in some areas. Our family room / breakfast room / kitchen already are hardwood that we put in a year ago and the entry hall is tile that continues outside on the two front steps. Second on the list is redoing our living room. It's kind of a hodge podge of stuff that we acquired for our first house and some things that were passed on to us. We need some toy storage for it too - but that can probably be something temporary like a shelf unit with cubbies and bins to go in them. I've been meaning to take some pictures and post them here for advice. We thought of putting wood in the dining room and carpet in the living room, but since their floors run together around the entry area tile, I'm not sure how to gracefully transition. This isn't the best picture of the whole area as it was taken for a discussion on tables, but it is one I have on-line. The dining room carpet connects with the living room carpet at the corner behind the table....See MoreHave you ever sent your kids to a language immersion camp?
Comments (35)First off, Middlebury was my dream school. I wasn't accepted :( Second, I always wanted, and would still like, to attend one of the Concordia language Village camps in Minnesota (they have adult AND kids camps!) Third, send your daughter on a homestay program in France. I went in high school. It included 3 weeks living with a family. They did not speak English, so I HAD to speak French. It also included classes for our group and field trips. When I walked in to French class in September, my teacher noticed right away that I was more fluid, my grammar and vocabulary had improved, and I was the better for it. edit to add, my "fraude famille" included a 3-year-old. One day my American classmate asked her if something was masculin ou feminin. Naturally little girl had no idea what she was talking about. Then we asked "le ou la?" and she got it right off the bat. It was just kind of funny. A family experience is great! As for my own kids, one went on a 3-day weekend immersion when he was in middle school. He came home speaking French much more comfortably, and much more willing to speak it around the house with me. Now he's a senior and we still converse in French sometimes, though most of our exchanges are limited to "Leve-toi!" at 6:28 a.m....See Morejoaniepoanie
