Any thoughts on the LG washer/dryer combo

Does anyone have any experience with the LG washer/dryer combos? I'm looking to put a w/d in a closet in the master bedroom as a second laundry. I don't want to spend a lot of money and it's important to do delicates, wool, silk, etc. I don't need a lot of capacity. Is a combo a reasonable option or are there any other suggestions. I can fit a stacked w/d, but thought I could save some money by doing the combo.

I paid 1200 dollars for my wm3431 just over a year ago, it workded great, but now is not drying well at all, and need it service and have to pay out of pocket. If you do buy it buy the extended plan, but do your research. Not happy at this time.

Hi all, First post. Apologies it is so long. Well, I've been lurking around here for quite a while, just reading and learning. I've loved clothes washers and dishwashers since I was a small child and my mother would only get me to sleep if I was listening to the hum of a washer. In January, I purchased my first FL washer/dryer combo, the LG WM3988HWA. I love this machine and my clothes have never been cleaner, fresher. I just had the first service call out today as the nozzle at the top of the rubber gasket at the door that is used for both the Water Circulation and the Steam features stopped functioning. Well, the Steam still worked fine, but the Water Circulation spray had turned into a slight dribble / dripping instead of a strong spray. This circulates the water in certain cycles, like the Bulky Item cycle and sprays the soapy or rinse water back onto the clothes as they tumble. Now, I follow all the rules, wiping the gasket down after each wash (actually I do it once after the wash is complete, and once after the dry cycle is complete making sure to get underneath it as well, and I get a lot of lint each time). I have run the tub clean cycle every two weeks (it does get a lot of lint out, which I can see floating in the water). I've drained the machine and cleaned the filter at each tub clean (not much in the filter, and the way it's designed, I can't imagine it would catch too much anyway). Well, as you might guess, the technician opened the machine and found tons of lint blocking the spray nozzle in the tube connecting it to the pump. Once cleared, the nozzle worked fine again. I asked him what I might do to prevent it from happening again. I have two shorthair cats, a sister with long hair, and myself in the house currently. I know the water circulates through the filter before hitting the nozzle, or at least that's what it sounds like. The technician told me that I could prevent it by cleaning the rubber gasket, running tub clean.....basically everything I've been doing religiously. I don't want to have someone coming out every few months to clean this out. Are there any suggestions on what I can do to prevent this from happening? I was wondering if you experts out there thought it might work to purchase some gauze or filter material from an aquarium store and stuff it in the filter to catch all the stuff that appears to be going through? I just don't want to cause strain to the pump and shorten it's life, but I thought aquarium filter material is made to work with pumps, so maybe it would be ok. Thanks for any advice. Nico

Just incase others have a similar problem - I thought I was getting something similar to this problem. Clothes not drying properly however there seemed to be a lot of steam coming out of the drawer / tray. Turns out the cold water solenoid valve had died (the top left hand of the machine with the 3 blue tabs, just right to the red square part in the picture on the comment above) so water wasn't flowing into the condenser and then the steam wasn't being condensed - you could tell this was the problem since intermittently you should hear a sudden "whoosh" for a second or two every few minutes of the valve opening up and water flowing out. It did appear that less water was coming out the grey pipe on the back of the machine too, but this was because no extra water was coming into the system via the condenser. Anyway bought new cold water solenoid valve for £25, two screws off, 3 pipes on and off and it was fixed. Couldn't find much about this on the web - Just an idea.

Drain-height: Another "possible" issue, posted in a customer YouTube video (in this case, regarding the 3.6 CF LG combo washer/dryer), may be drain-hose height. The customer's dryer component of the machine stopped working, so he lowered his drainhose height to floor-level (to a bucket), which apparently resolved his problem. It's probably more likely that he merely has a defective pump, working at lower capacity, or not working at all (although, if it's not working, I don't know why he doesn't have problems during the wash cycle). According to the LG documentation for the 2.3 CF model, it indicates that the drain service can be no higher than 96" (which is pretty darned high). Note that there is no mention of a minimum drain height. (As I seem to recall, in comparison, I believe Miele recommends a drain height no higher than 36"). But since the customer's drain height shown in the YouTube video seems no higher than about 46", it's probably more than likely that this customer merely has a defective pump. Nevertheless, since we're still at the "cement board" stage of our laundry-area renovation, this prompted me to re-consider pulling off the cement board, and having a plumber re-route the supplies and drain to a lower height (it's currently at 46"). This also gives us the opportunity to hide the supply and drain from view, since this is an open-plan installation. I have Supra combo and I had 3 pumps replaced. All the pumps were leaking. Third time I also had leak from the hose inside. You couldn't see it unless you took the back panel off. If it is pump, it is cheap and easy to replace. My pump cost 65 dollars. It was in extended warranty so I didn't pay nothing. I saw how it's replaced so I know now even I could do it next time. The only thing, my washer needed metric wrenches. To get to the hose behind inside,we had to take the top pane and heater off. I don't know how LGs are build (I have set too),but the supra is simple and easy to get to things. I would take off panels and see where the leak is. When mine first started, I took paper towel and put it under in places, thats how I figured out it was the pump. I could even see it if I laid down on the floor,sticking my head as lowand close as possible.

I've enjoyed owning them. Have had combinations for over 25 years. Not all from LG. They are getting progressively better and the LG I'm using now doesn't even use a vent. It condenses the water and sends it out the same hose as dirty wash water. You may find yourself using this machine for all your washing needs. I find they work best with hard water and calgon with the detergent (prevents calcium build-up and softens water.) Never had a problem with stinky wash, not with my first machine of 18 yrs (Eudora). And not with the two FL I currently use (7 & 1 years). The prices are very high in the states, why is that?

The last two, I've operated -- provided in hotels in Dubai and in S. Korea are amazing! I just wish I could read the one here in Korea, I cannot read Korean, but my husband's very dirty work socks come out like new and the clothes are very clean! The loads do take longer than top loaders but are efficient, much quieter, and come out of the machine ready for the drawer or suitcase. No steamy room or mildew around the machine. I am looking for an instruction book for my LG Tromm DD inverter 6.5kg WD 951 RD (reduced detergent?) machine. Then I can throw in my delicates. Right now I remove most clothes before the drying cycle and shake them out and hang them to dry. Don't need an iron. I have figured out only one setting...would be nice to have instructions. Been reading a lot lately about stinky wash and really, can't understand it. Also read that a product can be ordered at Stinkywash.com that solves the problem, if that is help to anyone. I would recommend this type washer/dryer. These types of washers normally use 1/2 capacity when drying. Mine is 6.5 wash, 3kg dry. But like I said, I hang up some of the load anyway and it is almost dry even before the dry cycle starts. I like that. My husband has been able to get by the whole summer with just 3 shirts and two pair of jeans! What you invest in the machine, you save in buying clothes! Those are my thoughts.

I have an LG combo machine and it too did a fine but slow job foe several years. Recently, though, the clothes get very hot and the frum gets full of steam but the moistyre doesn;t sem to be condensing as it used to. I have checked for drain blockage and all the hoses and the filter are clean. Maybe the outer drum needs cleaning. Does any one have any experience or suggestions re this problem? TIA.
