What's for Dinner,New Year's Day 2009?

Nothing special here no one around but me. I'll have my

grandson Connor this week end along with my son so maybe

I'll do a Corned Beef and Cabbage. Anything special for

you?

Had my turnip greens, yesterday. Hope that counts.
No blackeyed peas, today :o(
But AM cooking for myself country style backbones (pork), a sweet potato and English peas.

That should do it!

Yes, we have some bananas today..... The last of the banana plants that I had ordered arrived today. This ups my varieties to Double Mahoi, Super Dwarf Cavendish, Basjoo, regular Cavendish, Zebrinana, Williams, Dwarf Orinoco, and a variety that I haven't heard of before, Namwah. The Cavendish is the banana that one finds common in the grocery store. Wiliiams is another that is a commercial fruit. The others do produce edible fruit. There is an impending crisis in the banana community. There is a blight or something that is killing the cavendishs. Growers in central America are trying to breed a new sweet desert banana that will take the place of the cavendish when it succumbs to the blight. Researchers in the Netherlands are trying to genetically alter the cavendish to make it immune to the blight. I normally am militant about genetic engineering in our food crops, but I do like bananas. So I hope that if the breeders in central america don't succeed, the the European group does. This has happened before. The commercial banana for the first half of this century was the gros Michel. It succumbed to its own blight in the late fifties and early sixties. I still and looking for other species, especially the desert bananas. One that I particulary want goes by the name of "Blue Java" and "Ice cream." There are a lot of bananas that taste good, as desert bananas go, but they don't fit the criteria of being a comerical banana. Well, enough of banana history. I need to clean up a bit after potting up all eight varieties...

I can now add 7 pints of busylizzy's 10 day pickles with cinnamon and cloves. I still have several jars of last year's sweet pickle chunks, and although I love them, I have enough to last until next summer, so I tried Liz' recipe. They are very good and very sweet and very spicy, like candied cucumbers, how can that be bad? I finally got 13 pints of "sissy" salsa canned, I like it mild. Elery will be home tonight so we'll probably get in a double batch of the flaming hot stuff for him in the next couple of days. The chicken stock is still in the fridge, it wasn't as reduced as I like it when I got home so it got four more hours in the roaster, then hit the fridge about 11 pm. I'll skim the fat tonight and pressure can it. Since I had some extra time, LOL, I made two sugar free rhubarb pies, does that count? My BIL is diabetic and it's his birthday, and he loves rhubarb pie. I find that the rhubarb really overwhelms the artificial sweetener flavor and is almost unnoticeable, so that's good. I'm a little less certain about the white wheat flour that I made the crust from, but I'm trying to make it as healthy for him as I can. So after the flaming hot salsa is done, what's next? Either plain canned tomatoes or beets. One batch of pickled and the rest just plain I guess. Unless anyone has a good unique recipe for canned beets? Annie

Just think Lydia, if she had good luck after having spilled water on herself, I'm thinking I will probably win the lottery or something really good-hey I was soaking wet so that should count for something. Drought sounds pretty good to me right now. LOL At work yesterday, I was here alone, I went to the bathroom, no water. I checked every sink, no water. I thought to myself, here we go again, round 4. I called our other office to see if they were aware of any water issues, none that they knew of. About 30 minutes later I checked the sink again, we had a lot of air in the lines and then water. I don't know what happened or why, but we had water again. I think the water is taunting me. Round 1 Curlysue Round 2 Curlysue Round 3 The Water-flooded basement Round 4 Curlysue--I didn't even get wet that time For now I am still winning and feeling pretty strong actually.

I'm cooking black eyed peas with the ham bone from Christmas, plus chicken breasts with mushroom soup, sweet potatoes and cornbread. My kitchen smells soooo good.

Happy New Year ! I'm making:

Black-eyed Pea Soup

4 bacon strips,diced
1 med.green pepper,chopped
1 onion ,chopped
2 garlic cloves,minced
2 cans(15-1/2 oz.each)Black-eyed peas,undrained
2 cans(14-1/2 oz.each)diced tomatoes,undrained
1c.water
1-1/4 tsp.ground cumin
1-1/4 tsp.ground mustard
1 tsp.chilli powder
1/2 tsp.curry powder
1/2 tsp.pepper
1/4 tsp.sugar
Shredded Monterey Jack Cheese

In large saucepan ,cook bacon until crisp;remove to paper towels.Drain,reserving 1TBSP drippings.In drippings,saute green pepper,onion & garlic until tender.Add peas,tomatoes,water& seasonings.Bring to boil.Reduce heat ;cover & simmer for 15 -20min.Sprinkle with cheese and bacon.8 servings.

I'm making the steamed turkey recipe that Trisha Yearwood uses. Somebody here had posted the recipe a while back. We'll have potatoes and stuffing too with a side vegetable.

First time making this, so IF the turkey doesn't come out good.. we'll go out to eat.

I made Migas for breakfast. Will probably eat chip and dip for lunch. I'm cooking a big pot of caldo for an early dinner. It will be served with rice and lots of hot sauce! Mmmmm

Pineapple ham, scalloped potatoes and I'm not sure what other sidedishe. DH and I are on our own for the first time since Xmas eve. We've had my ailing DM and the 2 GD's all week. I adore them all, but I am very tired and have been craving ham all week.

Same as Shirley - pork, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. A Pennsylvania Dutch New Year's Meal. And applesauce, too. It was delicious. MMMMMM

Turkey,ham,assorted salads and two desserts..one a chocolate mint log and for DH homemade coconut cream pie.
Also have dinner rolls ready to go in the oven.
I swear I don't want to see food for a week at least after today.

Another traditional Pennsylvania Dutch New Year's meal here. It is a given in this part of the country, pork cooked with sauerkraut. Mashed potatoes to go under the 'kraut on my plate and corn and applesauce on the side. I always add a few hot dogs and some smoked sausage to the pork/kraut roaster about an hour before it's well done. Extends the pleasure of the 'kraut in sandwiches when the pork is all gone.

Another Pennsylvania Dutch dinner here in SW. Pa...Pork and Sauerkraut are in the oven, smelling so good, and I'll throw in some hot dogs also.....DH's favorite meal.....

We are having pork loin, black eyed peas, turnip greens and corn bread. I had planned to make some hoppin john, but I don't have any bacon and don't feel like going to the store. I'll make some in a day or so because I have plenty of black eyed peas for left overs.

Leftover turkey noodle soup, homemade from the leftover turkey I froze from Thanksgiving and dinner rolls.

It's a traditional Deep South New Year's menu for us and we're stuffed!

Pork Chops, turnip greens, rice, cornbread sticks, and a big pot of black eyed peas seasoned with ham hock, onions, garlic & red pepper flakes. Oh...and a new dish I put together with stewed tomatoes, whole kernal corn, seasoned onions & peppers and sliced okra. (It's a keeper.) I made a sour cream pound cake for dessert.

Enchiladas here...with refried beans and broccoli. Not really hungry though...but it smells good!
