questions about possible problem with my A/C

first off its only been run once this year and the temp was only around 80, and it seemed ok last year.

I took one of those spring tuneups and the first thing the tech said is I was missing half my charge, btwn 2 and 3 lbs low to be exact.

Specifics: he only hooked up the blue hose on the gauges, gave me a reading of 35 psig at 69 deg F. The unit had been running for less than 5 minutes when he took the reading.

1) is this correct procedure and does it mean I am low on refrigerant?

2) is this indicative of a leak?

he mentioned two methods to repair the leak, one used some kind of UV die to find the leak, this involved evacuating the system, locating the leak, purging with nitrogen and recharging. The estimate for this was $200-600 not including refrigerant.

The second method he said involved using something like fix a flat that automatically sealed small leaks, cost estimate $300 not including refrigerant.

he also mentioned sniffers are not good for detecting small leaks (which is what he thinks I have, at least 4 years since any refrigerant has been added).

What is my best bet: should I just pay $90 to recharge it ($45 a pound)?

Or should I have someone locate/ fix the leak? if so which method?

Should I just ignore it till I have problems, or should I get another opinion?
