I've been trying to paint more, and I just finished this one yesterday. This is actually the first time I have finished a painting without the guidance of my painting teacher.

Jan I read it here in a post. for a unknown reason if you root something in a green bottle it goes a LOT faster and things get a better root system. I started the orleander in it and everything else. Except for now as long as it is hot no brug cuttings. I do better putting them in earth right away. Hope that helped if not do a search or maybe others know more and can help you. good luck

I live in Northwestern WI. The USDA Hardiness zone map for the division of 3 & 4 runs right through my area. But I am also on a small strip of land on a hill between two lakes, surrounded by trees. I've easily killed zone 4 plants that were suppose to be indestructable. The electric company cleared out quite a few trees, so it might be closer to six hours now of sun, but it is definitely part shade. The intesity of the few hours of direct sun have killed shade plants (I lost a brunerra and a really cool looking geranium[cranesbill]). The lack of sun also decreased the pallet of my garden to pastels. Lots of pinks and purples and yellows. That New Dawn might just be the trick. It's lovely, and the pale color at that higher field of vision should play well with my other lower plants. I still like the Dr. Henry Upshall. It was cultivated by Hortico in 1993 according to Google. Still not sure if it can handle the lack of lots of sun though. I won't put anything new into the garden until Mother's Day, so I still have lots of time to research. Will be putting the Godkids to work in April on hardscaping after the frost finally heaves. Dr. says I can garden in April, but I doubt that means I can haul rock.LOL

"I hope I don't kill my worms!" I still feel that way every day. I am very pleased with the quality of the replies you have received so far. I have not even read every word of them yet but the posters here, even brand new ones who have just started or even those who have studied a bit and are considering starting a bin and gathering worms, always give really good answers and are trying their very best to answer questions. I think some of our posters are experts that if one had to pay the cost would be very dear indeed. Yet, they answer everybody's questions, no matter the experience level of the poster for free. Some replies take a considerable amount of time to gather the answer. The better the question as enhanced by the questioners own studying on the topic the better the answer. The posters here even answer the absurd, tilted and inappropriate with really good replies. "broccoli that was going bad" is the likely culprit. People talk about what not to put in a worm bin. Out of onions, citrus, I would say OK with those but no brassicas for an indoor bin. Because... talk to me... because you now know vermicompost bin information to share with others from hands on experience. You have valuable information to share already. Did you count the worms? That is the only way you will know how many you started with. People. Count or weigh your worms without bedding on a postal scale (post offices have these) when you get them.

Please talk to a qualified tax professional about your 2012 taxes. While cancellation of debt (COD) income is generally taxable, there are exceptions. The following is from the IRS website: "Is Cancellation of Debt income always taxable? Not always. There are some exceptions. The most common situations when cancellation of debt income is not taxable involve: Qualified principal residence indebtedness: This is the exception created by the Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007 and applies to most homeowners. Insolvency: If you are insolvent when the debt is cancelled, some or all of the cancelled debt may not be taxable to you. It's acrylic on watercolor paper.

Here's my process:
Have a vague idea of what I want to paint
Start slopping some paint on the paper
Stand back and look at it and hate it, and think "how in the world did I paint that last picture? It must have been a fluke"
Slop on some more paint
Add elements and cover up others
Realize that it is shaping up into something I might like
Fiddle around with it for a few days
Suddenly it all comes together (I don't know exactly how this step works, but it does)
Stand back and think "how the heck did I do that?"

I don't know what your subject matter is in this photo, but to me, I see a couple of ladies in blue robes dancing on the shoreline. It makes me happy.

OMG. When I saw the title of this thread I thought, OH NO! Not another subjugation to one more painting. ( Sarcism )

It's beautiful! Love the colors and every single thing about it! Thanks for subjecting me to it. Your title to this thread is the only issue I am having with your painting. I'd hang it on my wall in a heartbeat!

Thanks for the nice comments. As I mentioned above this is the first one that I've finished outside of a painting workshop where I've received feedback from the teacher or other students in the class. I just went on my own instincts, until I liked what I saw.

I didn't want to appear that I'm fishing for compliments, hence the subject line. Though maybe I am...lol
I know that I like it, but needed some feedback.

I do purely abstract paintings, though I do see whirling dervishes now that you mention it mtnrdredux. Maybe that's what I should name it. :)

I usually just start out with a general idea of the shapes and colors I want to use. Sometimes I get inspiration from another piece of art, or sometimes while watching TV I'll see some interesting shapes in the way that the scene is framed. Or I'll notice some interesting shapes in the landscape. However, the finished product usually deviates considerably from my original idea, as I layer on color and texture. After I'm done I look at it and have no idea how I got from blank paper to finished painting. There is no way I could copy it.

Look at the mat again. I'm thinking your painting is better than a single white mat suggests. Sorry but I used to live with a picture hanger. Framing has so much to do with art. The painting is great. You need to frame it accordingly.

Art is expensive.

I just realized in my first post I typed that I finished with the guidance of my painting teacher. I meant to say without.

The unmatted size is 30" x 22"

I took the picture with just a mat to avoid the glare from the glass.

I currently have it framed temporarily in an Ikea frame. Eventually I'll get it professionally framed.

What kind of mat(s) do you suggest golddust?

Terricks, your description of the process is delightful and answered a question I've had in my head for a very long time about painters of abstract art.
The painting is also delightful. I still don't know why some abstract is and others isn't, but my guess is it's allot to do with the artist and their personality.
