I see nothing wrong with this strategy as long as ductwork both supply and return is sized correctly. I assume this homeowner lives in an area/climate where good dehumidification is important. If this is a heat pump, the three ton will help him on winter heating limiting the use of aux heat strips. In fact, a two ton would really be undersized- a 2 1/2 would be preferred and is available in a Trane XL19i but the Infinity model is a better overall system with their sophisticated controls.

Do your own load calculation on it. Two stage equipment comes in 2, 3, 4, and 5 ton. Remember to match the BTU net output of the equipment at the design temps.

If you can match the load at or close to design on low stage, get the air distribution right as Carrierman states, you should be ok.

I wouldn't trust numbers from a program that has not been approved by the industry.

" The customer is always right " ( yah right ). Install what he wants, have him sign the work order and acknowlage what he signed with another signature, get your money and leave. Not your problem. He made the decision. not you.

Now I have heard everything. A pro actually wanting a second install opinion or two, so he can do right by the customer, and someone is telling them to get a signtaure, take the money and leave.

Yes.Dallasbill. that is about right. the customer has already made up his mind as what he wants. " the customer
is always right " . Get the money and get out. If it doesn't work,too bad. He got what he wanted. that is job
security. If Carrierman's customer is a refer tech. why doesn't he do it himself ? He should know the answers and why did he employ a second party ? There is something
screwy here. I myself will install anything you want and i might know perfectly well it will not work. too bloody bad.
I will install what the customer wants if you don't ask me first. I have his signiture on the work order and his money
Bottom line. The customer has a burned in idea as to what he or she wants. you then come in and say " it won't work " you are calling the customer a lier. They then get pissed off because their brother or son-inlaw says this is what you need. So who is the ass hole here ?

It will probably work fine. Get a signoff from the customer at completion. I regularly see oversized systems in N. Texas. You should only be concerned with the legal aspects of the job. There are none to be concerned with.

Until the very high utility prices landed like a ton of bricks, I never avocated oversizing a system. Today I recommend it on a regular basis. The reduced operating costs justify the oversized unit.

I really appreciate your alls input. I live in SW Florida. And yes dehumidification is the key reason to putting in an infinity system IMO, in Florida. I am just wanting to make sure that everyone agrees that even though its oversized an entire ton, it still will have the ability to dehumidify at half speed. I know that the duct work has to be extremly oversized, and of course it will be done. And to tell you the truth, now that this point has been brought up I am considering installing an oversized system in my home. If you think about it, you have a lot more cooling when needed, but you still have the low speed for the dehumidification. And this is a straight cool system. Thanks once again for everyone's input. I am trying to answer not only the customers concern, but my own. Can anyone think of any negative reasons to not oversize an infinity system by a ton? I am wanting to paint the customer an entire picture, and satisfy my own inquisition. Thank you- Carrierman
