Birthright Israel - have your kids gone?

Wondering who has experience with this and which organizer you have used. My oldest just lost his job 2 days ago and is kind of at loose ends. I'd love to see him take the trip in the spring if he isn't locked into something with work or grad school by then. We'd need a US organizer and preferably one of the less religously strict groups. I'm taking a risk even suggesting this to my son - it wouldn't surprise me if he falls in love with Israel and decides to move ..... but I want him to take advantage of this trip while he's still eligible. If your kids have gone, how old were they and what was their experience?

One of my nephews went when (i think) he was a junior in college. He loved it. It was very educational (and a bit physical--they climbed up Masada, instead of taking the tram!). After Sunday, I'll msg him to see if he remembers which organizer he had (I'm not even supposed to be on the computer now, but considering the subject, I'm sure G-d will understand!).

Also, one of my former co-workers finally got to go in the past year or so. She has posted some of her experiences on her blog, which I'll link you to. (You'll probably have to scroll back to earlier postings.) Actually, what I'd recommend is that after Sunday, you should send her an e-mail and ask her to point you toward the relevant month for the postings and ask her about her experience. She had a heck of a time getting hooked up with a program (she had unusual circumstances), but I'm sure she'd say her awesome trip was worth the bit of drama.

Our Max has spent quite a bit of time in the middle east. He *loves* it over there.

He went when he was 16 with 'Global Exchange', out of the bay area. He has returned three more times since then, traveling alone. Max didn't spend much time in Israel though. He was in Palestine, Jordan and Yemen learning Arabic.

OMG Shannon, my heart goes out to you! Why are so many contractors like this?!? We put off having our kitchen renovated for YEARS because we'd heard so many stories like yours. The custom cabinet maker for our original cabs (16 years ago) was like yours. What a nightmare! What makes me mad is that people give these guys good recommendations when they ~ obviously ~ are crummy at doing a good job. Why?!? Thank heavens there are some good contractors out there, The one we eventually got to redo our kitchen last year was excellent: on time, on budget, always showed up when he/they said they would, honest, reasonably priced and did wonderful, quality work. I feel so badly that you had to put up with this guy during the holidays, too. I hope you and your DH can finish up and enjoy your beautiful home . . . finally! And I hope that you DON'T give this guy a good recommendation! Lynn

My first DH and I starting camping when our son was about four. My husband bought a used van and we remodeled the inside and used it as our camper. Then we had to chance to buy a VW camper that had never been camped in so we bought it and sold the van. We used that for about a year. It had absolutely no power to climb mountains so we ended up selling it and started tent camping. When our son was nine, some friends that moved here from the NW talked us into sewing/building a teepee. That was quite an experience but the end result was some wonderful years of primitive camping, good times and great memories. After DH died, I passed the teepee along to our son and he still alternates between using it and tent camping. It's been 31 years since DH and I made it. I remarried and my current DH had one of the old VW campers when we married and we sold it a few years ago and bought a Class C motorhome with a slide. We've also got a two room tent that we keep on hand in case of family/friends over flow when we're camping. We've camped up to three months at a time. For the most part, I don't mind the cooking or camp clean up. Packing and unpacking is certainly not as tedious with the motorhome but the yearly maintenance & insurance can sure be a budget crunch. We keep threatening to sell it and go back to tent camping or a small travel trailer. I certainly don't see us giving up camping because we enjoy it too much to not do it. We've made a lot of great memories while camping and had some wonderful and awesome experiences that we may never have had otherwise. That's not to say that we don't enjoy trips and nice hotels because we do and most of those trips have been memorable in their own way. Thinking now...we may just be wanderers and adventurers at heart but we're the happiest with mother nature surrounding us.

Hehehehe OK you can buy a couple small dog collars in nylon and lash the legs of the two beds together so they can not roll apart. And here you thought I was starting to get kinky on you. Hehehehe So this is pretty much the same I have done with the futon. I am not moving the furniture in the room now. I am just leaving the futon open against the wall and even the head end is floating and devil may care. Guests can deal with it or not. It is MY room and they are welcome to it but complaints can go down the road. Hehehehe If two people do come I still have enough room to pull the futon away from the wall just enough to get up the wall side to get into bed. It will be tight but it is what it is. So if the two beds come apart just swing the one out while making up the other one against the wall and then back together. I would not make them up as one bed. LOL Unles you insist on being a brat. My parents had two twin beds hooked to one large king headboard. Not sure how it was done but then rolled apart to make them up as separate beds then back together and she would put one large bed spread over both. OH and Hahaha imagine your inlaws surprise when they think they have one HUGE bed and find out you tricked them. I can hear the giggles now. I live in a town of about 50 people. My daughter belonged to a 4-H club when she was younger. The leader had a wagon with a team of horses. In December we would all bundle up andhave blankets to cover up with and sit on the bales and they would drive around town and we would stop at all the houses and get off and go to all the doors and sing carols to them. We never got any money but some people would invite us in and give us cookies. After we were done we would go to the hall and have hot chocolate and more cookies. The wagon was like a covered wagon. Since I went to a country school and most of the kids went to a really small school here in town we didnt need song books because we had all of the songs memorized. It was so much fun.

goldust my son just lost his job last week and when I suggested this to him (he's 24) the initial reaction was very positive - but as he thought about it, he's less enthusiastic. He loves to travel and meet people from other countries/cultures but he does NOT like going with the flow and being one of a group unless it's his group and he's directing the flow! And there's the part about being a child of mixed marriage and loosey goosey religious practices - that's really an understatement - and not wanting a required religious component on a trip. I just hate to see this opportunity slip away as he ages out of eligibility. We'll see. Right now he's looking into Peace Corp, grad school or camping in CA in my niece's backyard while he looks for work!
