Mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, split pea soup with french bread and butter. The trouble is I want my own versions, so when I am sick, I mainly juzt think about thoze things.

Ice cream! Seriously, why do people become alcoholics & drug addicts when there's ice cream? It's cheaply & readily available, legal, and talk about comfort! Skip the bowl and just give me a spoon. Works for me!

Oatmeal, oatmeal cookies, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate anything, really good multigrain bread, wholegrain pasta. Basically, the food group labeled "starch" does the trick.

So Vanilla icecream is #1, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese but it has to be the old-fashioned custard kind from the Betty Crocker cookbook...we are having it tonight since I have been having a hard time lately. Rice pudding. If you don't make your own rice pudding there is a wonderful kind in the diary section with the other packaged puddings. It is wonderful...I ate it my whole bike trip this year. Tapioca. Home made only. You can see that I don't find comfort if it has to be chewed ! c

I don't usually crave food food. If I crave something, I crave sweets. Oatmeal or chocolate chip cookie dough or a scoop of peanut butter sprinkled with chocolate chips.

Lucille I made a cheesecake last night and did check how far away from me you lived so I could offer you a piece. Over 1000 miles.....

Oh (((Lucille))), I hope you're feeling better very soon! I've had shingles once, many years ago, but still remember the pain and discomfort.

My own comfort foods are:
~ homemade tapioca, made the "fluffy way" (ahhhh!)
~ homemade mac & cheese
~ my homemade red chile sauce on anything
~ my homemade chicken noodle soup
~ good quality vanilla ice cream
~ warm, homemade Tollhouse cookies

i also love carbs for 'comfort'... warm homemade breads- sour dough, multigrain and wheat are my favorites, pasta, warm cookies(favorites are tollhouse and peanutbutter!), and warm spinach-artichoke dip with tortilla chips i could consider comforting!!
i like warm foods for comfort, though i love icecream too!
chewy candies and peppermint patties also bring me comfort.
homemade tapioca pudding was my absolute favorite as a kid, but making it without folding in the meringue like my mom did just isn't the same...the meringue made the pudding, imo!!!

Ice cream for me, too, Stinky! I think there's a genetic component to craving ice cream. My mother, who has Alzheimer's, always loved ice cream; my dad not so much. It's the only food she asks for now. My DS is an addict, as well as my DGS. As my grandson said Tuesday when I asked him if he wanted a drumstick, "Memaw, you NEVER have to ask if I want ice cream!"

My comfort food favorites also include pizza and potato chips (which I seldom eat any other time), with a locally-famous French Onion dip. Oh, and Mrs. Grass' noodle soup with crackers and butter. I'm getting fatter just talking about this stuff.

Cheese. With some good bread or even crackers. Remember the commercial where the girl gets tons of presents from Santa and it turns out she left him cheese instead of cookies?

But we made some killer country fried steak with white pepper gravy for dinner and I must say that hit the spot.

For comfort, I love custardy type foods. Custard pie, flan, creme brulee, just about any kind of mousse (but especially my maple mousse), a well done tiramisu, cream puffs with vanilla puddina, cake with mousse or whipped filling. Even better when the things are light and airy. Depending on my need for comfort, some puddings would suffice.

I used to find great comfort in a well done pastry such as almond croissants or raspberry croissants. Those are off limits now but a well done berry cobbler or apple cobbler a la mode would also be very, very comforting. Sometimes I find comfort when I am to putz around the kitchen and make these things myself (a rare treat) and sometimes I find comfort when I am not responsible for any of it, including the clean up!

My favorite comfort foods include a buttery scrambled egg sandwich on buttered toast (seeing a trend here??), browned ground beef mixed with cream of mushroom soup over white rice, and the best of all...my Mom's pasta sauce, put in a coffee mug and eaten with crusty french bread.

I also love a bowl of Cheerios with sliced bananas.

Comfort foods are all the wonderful foods my Mother made, now I hold the keys to the recipes. Chicken and dumplings, meat loaf, chicken noodle soup w/home-made noodles(via my noodle maker),stuffed cabbage, pork chops w/sauerkraut, home-made vegetable soup~~just a few.

On the sweet side it's gotta be something as simple as dark chocolate Dove candy~~melt 3 in microwave, peel a banana, and start dipping! ;o)

Pesky, were you raised in the Ohio/Michigan area??? I still make those sandwiches abut hadn't thought of the ground beef on rice in years. They are yummy, though!

No Lynn...I was born & raised in So. California, but my mom was from the mid-west, so perhaps that's where it came from? She did a lot of creamy things...creamed eggs over toast (another fave), tuna casserole, just about anything you could mix a can of cream of mushroom soup in, she made.

A Fluffernutter on oatmeal bread & lots of very cold skim milk.

I forgot banana puddin' with LOTS of vanilla wafer...leave it in the fridge for days till the cookies are REALLY soft...any pudding...and I love the skin on top :) I had a thread about that last year I think it was. We had fun with that one.

Oatmeal and cream of wheat...haven't had that in years. I was born in OH...another mid-Westerner at least for a few years till I got to New Orleans. Then I got grits...which I love ...lots of butter and cheese.

Oh and the best comfort food. My Mom made it whenever we were sick. Campbell's tomato soup and grilled cheese. She use Velveeta LOL. We use my homemade bread and aged cheddar...cooked really really slowly till the bread caramelizes on the buttery outside and the cheese is really really oooooozing out. WOw I am drooling !

Chocolate cake and a glass of red wine.

Steak, a good chardonnay, my favorite dark chocolate, hot tea, roasted unsalted cashews, Greek yogurt, french onion soup, grilled chicken, fresh peaches.

mac and cheese (homemade) is comfort food to me too. If I'm not feeling well, I'm usually not that hungry either but potato soup will hit the spot. My mom always made us potato soup if we weren't feeling well. I love it to this day. I make a yummy cheesy potato soup.

If I have a cold or sore throat, hot tea with honey and lemon. If I'm just feeling down in the dumps, stressed, etc. chocolate wins hands down. LOL

OMG, Trailruner, Campbell's tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich is DD's favorite comfort food, too! Like you, my mom made that lunch for me all the time when I was young . . . as I have for my own kids. Now 17 y/o, DD still loves for me to make it, especially on cool Autumn and Winter afternoons.
