One cake, two frostings. Will this work?

Howdy!

This cake is for a 7 year old's birthday so it's gonna be tacky. The kid has requested German chocolate. And a dinosaur theme. There's the problem--decorating coconut pecan frosting.

So I'm thinking of doing a large rectangular chocolate cake with coconut pecan frosting on one side (dirt!) and butter cream on the other, probably blue (ocean!) with the appropriate writing and stuff. Then I can stick on clean toy dinos and plastic trees and be done with it. I'm not a skilled decorator.

It seems like the coconut pecan frosting never really sets. It's always gooey. So I THINK I should do the buttercream first and let it harden before doing the coconut pecan. Will that enable me to get a clean separation or do I need to stick a barrier in to remove afterwards?

Also, will a cake be good 24 hrs after baking?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!
