Eating On A Diet?

Is ''diet'' a verboten word in the Cooking Forum? Will I be drawn and quartered, boiled in saturated oil, roasted on a rusty spit for uttering it here? Taking my chances . . .

I'm interested in tips, thoughts, recipes, comments on the subject of what and how to eat when you're trying to lose weight.

Some background. SWMBO and I went on the so-called "Lemonade Cleanse". She for three weeks, I for one. I'm not a believer in cleansing one's colon or detoxifying one's body, but I liked the diet anyway. It helped me see how few calories I actually need, and to ''reset'' my approach to eating. I was consuming about 500 calories a day for that week, and, physically at least, felt perfectly fine. But I was bored, very bored. I realized how little of my eating was done for hunger or enjoyment, and how much was simply to pass time, or to mark the passing of time. Let's not mention eating well past the point of being ''full'' in all-too-frequent man-vs-food binges. I also learned that I enjoy cooking as much as I enjoy eating. I'm perfectly fine with cooking for 3 hours and then only just sampling the end product.

We ended our liquid diets the Friday before Easter. My goal is now to consume 1,000 to 1,500 calories per day, while eating the best food I can make - but only small portions, and if its not delicious, I'm not eating it. I'm also using this opportunity to learn more about Japanese cooking, which I gather to be a particularly healthy cuisine. I am definitely not avoiding fat, and will happily eat rich foie gras and creamy D'Affinois - but only a couple of ounces at a time. I write everything down in a notebook and total up my calories at the end of each day.

So far, I'm averaging about 1100 calories/day, am down from 208 lbs to 198 lbs, and shooting for 175 lbs. While cleaning out the basement, we found some old photos (1990?). Wow, I'd forgotten what I once looked like. So now I have a ''stretch goal'' too.

Would anyone want to share helpful hints with me? All you size 3's, what is the secret of your success? I am not particularly well-informed about nutrition, so my education is starting from square one.
