yarn for dishcloths??

I decided to knit a couple of dishcloths just for fun... when I looked at several patterns, they all called for worsted weight cotton. I only went one place but all they had in worsted weight cotton was yarn in baby colors -- pale blue, pink, yellow, and white. Not interested in those colors for a dishcloth. What yarn do you use, and where do you find it? Is an acrylic-cotton blend ok? Thanks!

Lion Brand makes Kitchen Cotten, which is worsted weight. I get it a Michaels or WalMart, it seems to me. Been a while since I bought any.

I use that Sugar and Cream cotton yarn from Lily. Comes in a whole bunch of colors too. Anyways, I have always used that and it's great! Lately though, I have been knitting some pot scrubbies and just using up some acrylic yarn that I have a tubfull of and it works great for those!! They fit right into the palm of my hand and the acrylic yarn is great for scrubbing!

I do the same thing in spurts with my knitting. I always have a project going, but I'm always looking around on the internet for different patterns, and in here also for new ideas. I find something that I like and then I order the yarn and there it sits, because by the time I finish my current project, I have found something else I want to do. I have enough yarn to make a prayer shawl and I was going to make a booga bag and then felt it so I have some noro kureyon and I have oodles and oodles of sugar and cream yarn for making dishcloths. I like to make them in sets and have a few for quick gifts. But yeah, I do like you do, buy the yarn and then wonder what I'm going to do with it. I subscribe to about 5 knitting magazines and there are lots of ideas in those all the time - some of them way too advanced for me, but I pick the ones I think I can handle.

I do --- and I will try this out tonight - I think size 6 might be too small - maybe a 7 needle - or maybe even an 8. Darn - Just remembered my DIL has all of my scrap yarn so I can't try it with Sugar and Cream. If you look, you are starting at one corner, (bottom right), then increasing until you reach the middle (top right corner, bottom left corner). Then you start decreasing until you get to the other corner, (top left). It is a garter stitch (all knit) - Do a long-tail cast-on - I am sure that is in the book - or on the internet --- just sit in front of the computer screen. Cat Bordhi has some great You Tubes --- some are almost like she is talking to a child - but she is good. Then you need the yo (yarn over) which creates the holes, then the K2tog (knit 2 together) -- that makes the decreases --- Sugar and Cream yarn is about 2.29 a ball - so really cheap. Let me know if you have any questions. It may at first seem like you are getting nowhere - and you are all thumbs -- but persevere - it is worth it. I would start by casting on about 15 stitches and just practice knitting back and forth for awhile. HTH

The best yarn for dishcloths is 100% cotton - due to its absorbency. And the 100% cotton examples given previously by Mary and Jannie are all fine for dishcloths. I've read that yarn with as little as 51% cotton as a component will do. But I have not tried anything other than 100% cotton - for a dishcloth. What I use my other, regular balls of yarn for is afghan squares - whether they are all acrylic, all wool or a blend of both. I knit 8 inch by 8 inch blanket squares with different dishcloth patterns and then sew them together. Each square is a short project and it doesn't take long to knit a lot of them. (My afghans vary between are 6 or 7 squares wide and 7 or 8 squares long.) Jane2 here (Janey elsewhere)

The Sugar and Cream (or Peaches 'n Creme) small balls are sold at WM and AC Moore here. WM has the large cones as well, but AC Moore has a few more vivid colors.

Hi! I have used both, but I prefer Lionsbrand's kitchen cotton, but if I remember correctly Lily's has more color selection. I order on-line at Joann's .com

I have been lucky to purchase LionBrand, Peaches & Cream and Sugar & Cream at AC Moore, JoAnn and Walmart. Our JoAnn closed but a Michael's is supposed to go there so we'll see what they have. I find they all work fine. I've purchased both from the 2.5 oz size to the 16 oz spool. I generally select colors that match my dish towels/kitchen so they can be thrown in the same wash. I avoid colors that are too light since they get discolored too easily with all the food stains.

Thanks, everyone... for whatever reason, our Michael's only had the baby colors in worsted weight cotton, one brand, and that was it. I found a little more selection at JoAnn's and love the selection on line. If I decide to do very many, I'll definitely order that way. Thanks again!

I've made a number of dish cloths and always used left over yarn. Every type I've used has worked well.

I use sugar & cream for making my dishcloths. But I am looking for something different. My Aunt who just passed away made a couple of dishcloths for my Mom. They were made out of something that seems to be a cross between sugar and cream and a brillo pad (light on the brillo pad). I have searched everywhere and seem to find anything like it. Does anyone have any suggestion? I would love to find this stuff. It doesn't stain, doesn't hold odors, and does a little scrubbing and washes out well just in your dish water. Help, any one???

They are making some yarns with steel wool in them--is it a cotton/steel wool blend? I found the website below that usually has some (out of stock right now.)

Kayrita, you might try getting a yard of nylon netting at the fabric store and cutting it into 1-2" strips (you can tie the strips together with a knot, or, I zigzag or serge the ends together to make one long strip) and crochet or knit with the strand of yarn and the strip of netting held together as one. Just do a small piece that you could use as a scrubbie to see if it's similar to what you want.
